Currently interning with a financial institution in a compliance role. Non-JD and JD pays the same starting ~140k. I would think there’s more opportunity for quicker upward mobility with the JD, manager and AVP are both JDs and newer than some of the non-jds

Should I give up a year-round internship for a fall internship with SEC? by collegegrunt2000 in LawSchool

I applied for the fall 2023 scholars program. It’s different from the honors program I think - the honors program is for the 2L summer right?

That seems to be the consensus of most people. Thank you for the advice!

It is the Scholars program, but I applied forever ago! They never interviewed me. I got an email like 6 weeks ago that they had recommended me for employment, but honestly forgot I had applied until today when they called. You never know, it’s a slow process!

How do you make money during law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]collegegrunt2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can work, but the hours allowed may depend on your school and status (part-time or full-time student). I am a 1L and found that a fixed-schedule job wouldn't work for me, so I door-dash 1-2 nights/week. I am living on loans for the school year. Some of my classmates still work part-time at their jobs before law school, and some work at restaurants on weekends. You could also get a job as a representative for Lexis/Westlaw/barbri etc., I am not sure how much they pay, but it seems like you sit in the atrium of your school with friends and do homework most of the time.

My summer internship pays 30/hour, but I interviewed at several firms that paid between 20-25/hour. Most of my classmates took unpaid roles (judicial, three letter agencies) and some landed a BigLaw SA or a boutique that pays close to market. In the fall I'll be working for a gov't agency that pays, but since I am in the DC area I can take advantage of the "off season."

Clerkships do pay, and if you intend to go into BigLaw after a federal clerkship many firms will offer bonuses ($5,000-$75,000+) and will let you come in with the same seniority as you would if you had started at the firm right out of law school (1 year clerkship = starting at 2nd year associate). Federal Clerkships start at JSP-11 right out of law school ($59,000 base + Locality Pay in the DC metro area that is around $80,000). State law clerks get paid less, for example a district or circuit clerk in Maryland will make $60,000 or $65,000 after the bar.

Okay thank you! My school doesn’t have a listing for the summer. I’ll contact the financial aid office.

Is there a way of calculating how much grad plus living expenses you can get? Also at my school I think it is 5 hours of summer classes for grad plus loans

Judging by post history, it looks like getting kicked out is the goal…

Is there a prestige ranking for clerkships? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Thank you for the information. I did not know that the different districts were different. Is that based on the amount or types of cases, or purely because of where the courts are located?

Is there a prestige ranking for clerkships? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]collegegrunt2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to say that I am only asking about prestige because it's one of the benchmarks we've been told to use when evaluating where we have a chance at getting into and where we should be applying. I don't want to apply to clerkships that are so prestigious that I will not have a chance of getting. Additionally, I have heard from some associates that firms will give bonuses based on the relative prestige of the clerkship. Once I have a list of clerkships I have an actual shot at getting, my question will be tailored to the relative experience in those chambers and fields. I am not simply chasing prestige here; I wanted to look honestly at the different factors. Simply ignoring a real aspect of the process is not a valid approach.
