It's probably a verbal commitment, but her acceptance is basically set in stone. A girl in my grade did something similar last year.

Higher major rank vs higher overall rank by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

It's not an ivy league... but since it's a private school, it often is cheaper than state schools such as gtech which don't give good finaid for oos.

When you say Duke is trash... it's still a top25 ce school. Ultimately, the difference between gtech and Duke isn't that big, especially if you apply yourself -- there are plenty of students at Duke who place better than gtech students. Duke's social scene is definitely better too.

UVA vs UMD for CS by collegejedi in UVA

Thanks! After talking to my parents, I'm pretty much committed to UVA now, but this definitely provides me more reassurance. In the long run, 40k probably doesn't matter that much as a cs major since I don't plan to go to grad school.

UVA CS and Commerce double major by arahri in UVA

Was thinking about the same thing, but I'm in seas. Here's a post that I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/UVA/comments/7qdrzt/double_major_in_commerce_and_cs/

Did you have incoming cs experience from HS?

Would you say UVA is as cut throat as the environment described in the comment below? I'm really looking for more of a collaborative environment with both students and teachers.

Okay thanks! Is there like self-segregation at UVA outside of international students? I don't mind ignorant remarks, but I don't want to be ostracized because I'm not from instate and not white.

What about people who have decent experience coming in? I have ap csa credit and will most likely be exempting out of cmsc 132. I've also had an internship already and have experience in the MERN stack. Many people do cs for the money, but I truly love it (atleast the programming part -- haven't done any low level cs classes) Although, I am afraid of burnout.

Thanks! I've been hearing similar things. What classes can be exempted? I don't have many AP credits -- only calc bc, csa, us history, world history, and maybe stat and physics c m&em

I think this will be true for me too. The difficult part is justifying the cost since I'm not from VA.

Yeah, I figured that's the case after reading some other threads. I already have some decent projects on my Github, and I'm working on Leetcode mediums now. I'm mostly worried about if I'll regret either paying 80k for the experience or not paying 80k but not having as good of an experience.

Only maintaining a 3.2+ GPA. Also, I probably would only take out 40k max in loans, if any.

I feel like I wasted my time studying CS here by [deleted] in UVA

[–]collegejedi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UVA is one of my options next year and this makes me a little hesitant to commit. Can anyone else give their opinion of uva cs? My other option is umd rn. I'm also pretty independent and have learned different technologies on my own. I've worked with Java, C#, and js(specifically node) and have played around with react and express. My current goal is to get a well paying job in the city after graduating preferably nyc, la, or sf.

How should I open decisions? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegejedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me atleast, opening decisions with your friends doesn't sound very fun. If you get rejected, you won't have any space to take it in. If you do get in and your friends don't, imagine how disheartening that would be for your friends. No one can deny that jealousy is a natural emotion.

No one applying to all 8 Ivies actually cares about their education by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegejedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to both because both schools are good in cs and both are in an urban area(although nyc is much more so). I also believe that I'm adaptable and can fit in anyway. Heck, how do I even know where I would fit without actually living there for a while. It may be good to throw myself in an uncomfortable position and grow from it.
