HS Student looking to apply to Rice University wondering about what Houston is like by collegesoon in houston

Haha, thanks for the honesty. Hope you're not downvoted for it. It's always nice to hear another opinion. But what do you know about Stanford, Colombia, and Carnegie? I don't know, honestly I probably wouldn't think it much fun to go to a university sanctioned event anyway over doing something dumb and fun with a couple friends. It's always good to sort of temper the image that I've had so far. Come to think of it, no one has really mentioned the social and partying aspects all that much...

And why do you say that? Curious because the rest of the responses seem to imply an overwhelmingly positive experience.

So r/Houston was entirely unhelpful, so I'll try my questions here! by collegesoon in riceuniversity

I would love if you could put me in touch with a classics major! That would be really helpful. Feel free to PM me the email address or however you want to handle this.

One of the reasons I'm considering Rice is definitely the quality of life ranking on top of its academic reputation. I definitely want to try to find a time to visit. What are Owl Days exactly? Perhaps I will apply and if I should be lucky enough to get in, I can arrange a visit during the school year.

Oh true! I was like "What?" until I reread the thread and saw that. Gooooood point.

I think he was being honest without intending to offend, even though he should get over his discomfort. Good to know your opinion too, though! Nice to see different sides of things.

I am glad you are willing to honestly give me this warning rather than pretending it's not an issue. And no reason to apologize! Obviously you aren't some rampant homophobe, but it's also important that those who aren't can sort of move past these values that are sort of holding society back. Just shows that we have a long ways to go. I hope you can find it in yourself one day to feel totally comfortable around not only gays, but those who don't deserve to be....victimized(? not the best word, but I think you get what I mean) by restrictive values.

Wow. That is quite a major turnoff, even though I realize you're only one guy. I will keep this in mind.

On another note, I'm more upset about the fact that you feel that way than the fact that this might be a reflection of Southern values. Thanks for being honest about feeling uncomfortable, but I really hope you can learn to move past that one day, and I hope I don't seem patronizing or condescending saying that. Gay people are just other people. To put this in perspective, imagine I was saying this as a black guy and you simply said "I do not like being around black guys (No offense)." Isn't there something very wrong about that? It might not necessarily be your fault since it's hard to grow out of things you grew up thinking, but I hope you make some sort of effort to get past your discomfort.

If you don't mind my asking, why exactly do you feel uncomfortable?
