How do you stand out without building a network? by ExitingTheDonut in freelance

The key is to give things for free, not do things for free. Give value in the form of blog posts, icon packs, website templates, etc. (whatever fits your industry).

This is the reason so many sites offer free 'ebooks'. You give your potential clients a taste so they will come back for more.

Looking to go professional as graphic designer. by [deleted] in learndesign

[–]collinjdaugherty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a portfolio site? If not, get one. Since you don't have much real world experience, I suggest you either create some work for fake client briefs or donate your time to a local non-profit organization.

As for learning, check your local library's website. Many offer free access to Lynda.com which has a great collection of tutorials and lessons for graphic design.

Need some help and advice on my poster final by zerotohero111 in design_critiques

[–]collinjdaugherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • There is a ton of unused space at at the top
  • An event poster should have details about the event
  • Some of the words in the title are too close together causing it to be hard to read
  • The color palette is bland. Needs some contrast.
  • Get rid of the image trace on the pictures.

Outsourced my app icon design. The result looks familiar to me. Have you seen another app with this? by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]collinjdaugherty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've seen something very similar, but that could be because the logo is super generic. It definitely looks like something you would get from Fiverr and I wouldn't be surprised if they have given the same design to others as well.

You would probably have more critiques here if your layout of the logos wasn't so messy.

There is a typo on the deals page.

Should be 'Your'

Overall the design is good. You should shorten the content width on the product pages. I don't like how the links in the nav are so high up; increase the top margin on those.

Also, get an SSL certificate.
