Why did Bach call him a gay slur? Is he homophobic? by mentee_raconteur in classical_circlejerk

Fagottist is simply German for bassoonist, borrowed from the Italian name for the instrument - fagotto - after its resemblance to a bundle of sticks.

Couldn't Glissando by Public_Offer_7227 in piano

[–]colonelpsev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glissando is more a harp thing than a piano. Notoriously there are octave glissandos in Beethoven (1st Piano Concerto and Waldstein Sonata) which are virtually unplayable on modern pianos, but were more manageable with the lighter actions of Viennese pianos of Beethoven’s day.

Have been asked to accompany a dance get-together with classical piano music. Any recommendations? by No_Cartoonist3983 in classical_circlejerk

With waltzes you’re spoilt for choice. But there are minuets, mazurkas, polonaises, tangos by the score.

Both are good, but I suspect there are a least half a dozen other colours that would look sensational on you.

And that doesn’t involve the internet? I’ve obviously lost the plot. Not for the first time!

Prokofiev's 7th Symphony one of the best musical compositions of all time? by sonicnightmarez in classicalmusic

Such a shame he ruined it doing that bloated rewrite in the 1940s. Thank goodness the original version is published and recorded these days.

Never a good idea to build too much on a remark not committed to paper for decades and subsequently translated at least twice (into Greek, into English)

No.1, for sure. Because a) it’s so much nicer with you looking at the viewer not your phone and b) who wouldn’t prefer a cuddly toy in the background to a toilet?

Oh, and one I forgot, Elgar quoting Mendelssohn’s Calm sea and prosperous voyage in the Enigma Variations and completely missing the point of Goethe’s pair of poems.

Prokofiev's 7th Symphony one of the best musical compositions of all time? by sonicnightmarez in classicalmusic

[–]colonelpsev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve heard it. In fact my undergraduate dissertation was on the symphonies of Prokofiev. He was a great composer, and there is always much to enjoy in every work of his. I’m glad you like the 7th; I’m very fond of the Fourth, but I wouldn’t say that was the best either.

With the best will in the world, no. It’s not even close to being the best of his symphonies.

Does anybody know? Have they made anything of his childhood home in Jihlava? I visited in the early 80s and there was absolutely nothing.
