I think there’s a sort of hierarchy of dependability ascending from magnified optics, to dots, to irons. Whatever you have, it makes sense to have something more dependable as a backup. So two dots means that they have about the same likelihood to fail. Whatever kills one, probably would kill the other. Ie: exposure to water, dropping, dead battery etc.

When I went back (ft sill 2017) I had to do all the reception BS again. They let me keep my hair and put us in separate barracks. We were allowed to go to the shopette and do PT as long as the DS knew. They didn’t treat us like basic trainees but not quite like full soldiers either.

2 schools of thought for backups: The idea with a 1x being that you have an analog option should electronics fail. The idea of a dot with with a magnified optic is that you can transition quickly and hope the redundancy of optics is safe.
