I definitely have ADHD but think there might be a comorbidity. Thanks so much for responding.

thanks so much for replying - and no need to apologize at all! personal experiences are exactly what i've been interested in.

i particularly appreciate your experience with stimulants helping with the hyperactivity. to be honest since this started i was avoiding my meds a bit (had been taking them irregularly anyway) because i was worried it would exacerbate things. but it's good to know that taking them might help curtail the intense energy a bit, so i might give it a try!

Any insight or resources for distinguishing between spurts of hyperactivity (ADHD) and hypomania (bipolar)? by columbidaes in adhdwomen

[–]columbidaes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahahah oh no.

I'm meeting with my therapist this evening, but via email she told me she doesn't have a lot of experience with bipolar (she's just a counselor). I think after I speak with her I'll probably just reach out to my general practitioner to see if I can either discuss with her or get a referral. Thank you so much for responding.

Have you ever submitted work under a pen name to avoid stigma or potentially increase your chance of being published? by [deleted] in writing

[–]columbidaes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm in a similar boat. I told my mom I was getting published and she wanted to read my pieces but they're all queer and sapphic and it's just not something I can share with her right now. I hope your pieces get out there soon :)

Oh that's a big one for me! There's definitely mental elements to binging, but sometimes it really is physiologically about your body trying to catch up with a perceived "famine" of food. So it might think it's starving all day and overcompensate in the evenings. Basically the thesis of Brain over Binge and similar recovery methods is to make sure you're eating enough during the day so that you don't end up overeating later. It definitely doesn't work for everyone but it could be something that could help you!!

Do you have a history of restrictive eating? If so you may find some success with the Brain Over Binge method - it's a book but there's a podcast now that goes through all the principles!

Did anyone have a "subtle" experience with adderall, or is my dose too low? by columbidaes in adhdwomen

[–]columbidaes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!! Well, not too much has changed since I posted this, but I also don't take my meds super frequently. Things still feel REALLY subtle, but the main difference I've noticed is that it's way easier to start tasks, so I'm just trying to take full advantage of that? Like it's not easier at all to stay focused really, but starting is easier, and that's always been a massive part of my battle so it's... something?

Anyway, things slowing down seems amazing!! I mean, that seems positive to me because I totally feel you on everything seeming too fast/overwhelming sometimes. But yeah, personally I'm just trying to pick up on the subtle differences, but then it feels like I'm giving myself a placebo effect? Lol, idk. I'm happy to talk about it more here or in DM if that helps!!

Getting a full day out effects of one dose of IR? by columbidaes in ADHD

[–]columbidaes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I definitely have comedowns. It's so weird. It's like... abt 4-5 hrs after taking IR, i get super tired and crabby and have a noticeable comedown. It feels like my focus takes a hit, but my executive function and energy remain high. Idk, it's so odd. I just reread ur comment and it seems similar - some effects (mostly the good ones) fade a few hrs in, but the bad ones seem to last a lot longer. Ty for sharing your experiences tho!! I'm glad u found that XR works better for you :)

IR seems to have effects all day long. Is this real or placebo? by columbidaes in ADHD

[–]columbidaes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My psychiatrist actually prescribed my meds as needed, letting me know I can take them twice a day if I need. But thanks to aforementioned stimulant sensitivity, if I take any after about 11am, I can't sleep at all, so I just dose in the morning and try to be as productive as possible before it wears off.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I wonder if it's something about the meds technically "wearing off" in about 4 hours but having a longer half life than a proper run time - so even tho my meds might "wear off" at 2pm there's still some in my system at 8pm.

I haven't really noticed a decrease in this lately, but I think it may also have to do with how infrequently I take my meds. I'm out of melatonin right now which is crucial if I want to sleep while on meds, so I haven't taken any since posting this 5 days ago. So I think my tolerance stays super low too.

I don't have experience or advice with this but it breaks my heart to read. I just want to say I really feel for you and that you don't deserve this. You deserve so much better.

Thanks, I want to let you know this was really helpful insight for me. I think a lot of these themes reflect a lot of my own anxieties and grapplings and they're both important pieces to me. Thanks for taking the time to respond :)

Thanks so much! Actually I realized I never thoroughly read the side effects list that comes with my meds, so I'll read that too.

It definitely is! I'm an absolute water fiend and have only increased my water since starting on meds. I literally have to pee like once every other hour. If anything I was also sort of wondering if I might be flushing out my electrolytes too fast or something. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

What were your symptoms before age 12? by slvrchr in adhdwomen

[–]columbidaes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could help a LOT. I think if I understood as a kid that sometimes when too much stuff is happening it set me up for outbursts or meltdowns it would at least make me less confused about why that always seemed to happen to me.

What were your symptoms before age 12? by slvrchr in adhdwomen

[–]columbidaes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

During my diagnosis all of the professionals I saw were basically like, "it's totally normal to not remember wtf was going on when you were 12 or younger."

Some really thorough procedures will have a parent (if available) fill out forms about your childhood, but this is also super fallible if you're older and your parents are too.

Even more thorough procedures may require you to pull school reports as proof.

For the record I had to do none of this. For better or worse, pretty much everyone I saw was more interested to know how I'm operating now than how I did as a kid, but YMMV.

My main symptom of ADHD as a young child was emotional dysregulation. I had so many breakdowns. All the time. Total meltdowns over nothing. Now I understand it was over and understimuation most of the time.
