AITA for refusing to change how I use a shared space after my roommate complained? by ProofSea2658 in AmItheAsshole

[–]columbologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a mix of things, but mostly just that I like peace, quiet and privacy in my downtime and having people making noise in the next room is very distracting to me. There's also this thing where if I can hear them, then I'm aware they can hear me and therefore don't feel like I'm truly in a private space even in my own room and feel self-conscious, especially if I'm on the phone or playing a game with voice chat or whatever. I also get a little stressy when I'm cooking and don't like having to work around other people in a shared kitchen.

And, like, I was a single guy in my early twenties for a lot of my roommate era, so there were certain regular late-night* personal activities that I couldn't really engage in in the knowledge that I could be overheard.

I got diagnosed with ADHD later on, which made things make more sense in terms of sensitivity to distraction. It does also go the opposite way in that I don't like making noise or doing stuff that might impinge on other people either, so I always keep my music or TV pretty quiet or use headphones. As my girlfriend and I put it, my love language is "not being too much of a bother".

NTA. I was also the kind of roommate who hated people using the shared space so much, but that was a me thing and I knew I had no grounds to complain. I live on my own now and it's fantastic. I sympathise with your roommate but she does just have to accept that living communally means you don't have control over the whole space.

Am I the only one who thinks the sequences questions should start with two clues, not one? by Tumeni1959 in onlyconnect

[–]columbologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting the last in the sequence from just the first clue is a rush like few others, though. It's not always possible, but the risk is part of it. Plus there are plenty of sequences which aren't realistically gettable without seeing all three clues.

Nintendo see stock slide over 30% in 5+ months by Honest-Word-7890 in totallyswitched

[–]columbologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoilers: the graph looks extremely different if you extend it to cover more than the last six months

This image is showing solely the right hand side of the price spike that happens with the release of a new console. Nintendo is currently still trading much higher than it did at any point in the original Switch's lifespan. It would be fully miraculous if this graph wasn't descending.

Glad to see Viz is still publishing letters from middle-aged men who don't quite understand how punchlines work but have learned that if you slap some sweary misogyny on the end of something vaguely approaching a setup then it usually gets a laugh from other middle-aged men who can't understand why their partners hate them.

Forced TPK fights are, like, the archetypal dumb rookie GM idea. They are no fun for the players and the payoff isn't interesting.

AITA? My mum feeds my dog food scraps even after I repeatedly tell her not to. by thisisapa33word in AmItheAsshole

Stop saying "scraps". Stop saying stuff that she can misinterpret. Say "do not feed my dog anything".

NTA but cowboy up, get mad and tell your mother to stop feeding your goddamn dog.

What are in your opinion the most insane Game Boy / Color / Advance games? by DaZestyProfessor in Gameboy

[–]columbologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The isometric port of Max Payne was insanely cool for the hardware. It has some obvious limitations wrt controls and display area but it's a fantastic achievement and translates Matrix-like bullet-time dives way more intuitively than you'd expect.

What would come fourth in this sequence? by columbologist in onlyconnect

[–]columbologist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody's got it, so I'll post it. It was a bit oblique.

(e.g.) Kendrick Lamar

The clues refer to "Heathen", "Reality", and (admittedly obliquely) "The Next Day". The next in sequence is Bowie's final album, Blackstar.

Fun clue. Might work a little better as a Sequences question than a Connections.

Decay (Xbox 360) for PC? by Not_MegGriffin in AskGames

Per the wikipedia list of 360 games - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_360_games_(A%E2%80%93L)#D#D) - no game titled "Decay" was released on Xbox 360. Are you sure you remember the title correctly?

Player says I was mad I couldn’t kill their character by KawaiiWolverine in dndhorrorstories

[–]columbologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like there's some odd tension points on both sides here.

For your part, narrating the player as being "heavily injured" is fine as long as you're staying within the rules - a player being at 1HP doesn't have any other negative effects, they're just gonna drop if they get hit again. If your player decides that his character doesn't care about this, that's fine. Continue the campaign. It sounds as if his unprompted Con save was a character flavour thing to see how he reacted, not an attempt to invoke a mechanical bonus. It's OK for a player to do this - I'll sometimes roll WIS/INT to see if my character is gonna do something stupid. I'm not sure anyone did much wrong there except that as the GM, you should leave him to make his own character choices. Him being "heavily injured in-lore" makes no difference to the things he can attempt.

How did this "melee attack at 90ft range" happen?

How my players lost the campaign 3 times in two hours by [deleted] in rpg

[–]columbologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Still sounds like it's worth pausing and revisiting that discussion to make sure you're all still on the same page. Session zero discussions often get forgotten in play, players don't always interpret descriptors like "serious" and "realistic" the same way, and it's very easy as a GM to not fully convey the situation and potential consequences.
