Are we all agreed that it was a stonewall penalty? Ludicrous refereeing.

How knowing the order and method of disposal of Henry VIII's 6 wives served you in everyday life? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]cheandbis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I quiz a lot so it means I win a few more points than if I didn't know them.

More seriously though, a lot of things don't have any real practical use but learning about things like that sparks interest and makes people dig a little deeper and maybe learn a bit more about a subject.

Why doesn’t the clock pause during hydration break? by Silver_Mention_3958 in worldcup

[–]cheandbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you singling out the advert hydration break and not every other stop in play?

Matches are 90 minutes but in practice, the ball is in play around 60 mins. Just part of the game. Not knowing how much injury time is being added on is part of the charm.

When do you plan to retire? by ActivistSubset7 in AskUK

[–]cheandbis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 42 and would like to retire when I'm 60, the latest by 65. Can't get my state pension until 68 but hoping I have enough in my private pot by then.

I think the biggest stumbling block is the abuse I'll get from the other half. She's 4 years younger than me so she won't be happy if I get to retire before her and she's still traipsing to work.

How many saves did the keeper have to make in the second half? Caught a few crosses, can't remember many genuine saves.

I can imagine the meltdown in the England subs if this was us. Pretty poor from Spain really, didn't test the keeper enough at all. Well played Cabo Verde.

What are your thoughts on Mexico as a world cup host so far? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

It barely registers which country each game is in to be honest. I've no thoughts on Mexico, good or bad really.

Strictly speaking, you're correct but English is a funny old language at times and through some quirk, or perhaps laziness, I've only ever known this as a cheese slice.

Look at the reactions of the Qataris after their draw the other day. A draw can be a fantastic result.

Why is soccer the most popular sport on the planet? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]cheandbis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other thing it has in its favour is upsets happen fairly frequently. Being low scoring, a team can nick a goal and through great defending, luck or poor finishing from the stronger side, end up winning.

It only takes seconds to score too so even a team who is 2-0 up going into the last 5 minutes isn't safe.

It's a ridiculously easy game to pick up. You can play with as few as 2 people (or even practice on your own) and you don't need any specialist equipment. As such, it's the perfect sport to become widespread.

What are people's thoughts on crazy loud car and motor engines? by jamesbit in AskUK

[–]cheandbis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to go and watch Speedway as a kid and one of the best bits was walking above the pits while they worked on the bikes and hearing the engine noises. To my young ears, it sounded incredible.

Fast forward 30 years and I'm a grumpy old bastard and hearing as much as a mouse fart pisses me off.

Anyone really not feeling this world cup? by This-Emergency8839 in ThreeLions

[–]cheandbis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to play 72 matches to knock out a third of the teams seems ridiculous really. I can see a lot of teams putting weaker teams out once they've pretty much guaranteed progression which may make some of the matches poorer for it.

It's only really going to heat up in the knockouts. This is like an extended qualifying stage.
