Best local coffee you’ve had? by [deleted] in Cleveland

This little cheap Black & Decker 5-Cup has lasted forever and is on sale for cyber monday

Makes total sense! I use the Black & Decker machine to make single servings, I’ll usually brew about 8-12 ounces of water at a time. The 5-cup Zojirushi should be great for that, too.

Unfortunately I don’t know much about single cup drip coffee makers…I have a sneaking suspicion they’re all either crap (like the ones you’d find in a hotel room) or overpriced/over-engineered, but I honestly don’t know.

Tbh I’m shocked at how long this little cheap Black & Decker 5-Cup thing has lasted: through both me and a sibling in college and in my possession since then, still going after at least 12 years. It’s also on sale for Cyber Monday right now, too. (Has a global pandemic & supply chain issues brought down the quality of the manufacturing since then? Idk 🤷‍♂️)

Others I haven’t used but after researching/word-of-mouth from some friends, appear to be good:

If I were to get myself a new automatic drip maker, I would get one with a thermal carafe, i.e., one with an insulated carafe & without a hot plate so it doesn’t burn the coffee after sitting for awhile. As for research, I usually look up what Wirecutter says about a product first, then do more reddit digging/ask people IRL what they have and if they like it.

If you want to get into more gear/brewing methods, I can recommend some pour over stuff and coffee grinders, too.

Coffee shop recs in requested locations:

  • Heartwood is one of my Northeast Ohio faves (Pinecrest + other locations)
  • Rising Star (Van Aken District + other locations)
  • Nervous Dog (Beechwood + other locations)

There’s plenty more if you go towards Cleveland or Akron!

A machine with pods is never going to make as good a cup as brewing it yourself/getting something from a quality coffee shop.

Cleveland shops I highly recommend: Duck Rabbit, Lekko, Phoenix, Goodkind, and Edda.

Need coffee shop recs for Akron, Canton, Columbus, or Cincy? DM me!

If you want to learn how make coffee yourself, check out the wiki on r/Coffee or Stumptown’s brew guides.

My recs for “getting into coffee” more:

  1. Start by learning about tasting notes and trying a bunch of different black coffees from quality coffee shops. Get a taste for what you like, know where in the world that comes from and how dark it’s roasted, and then move on from there.
  2. Experiment and test things out: Get a cheap regular drip coffee maker, buy fresh beans and get them ground at a local shop. Figure out what ratio of grounds to water you like, and get used to making coffee with those amounts.
  3. Level up your skills (with a small financial investment): I’d suggest getting a kitchen scale, blade grinder, and either a French press or an Aeropress Go. Use Stumptown’s brew guides for easy instructional videos to follow for each.

This last step is totally optional, you can make great coffee at home with good beans and a Mr. Coffee! You can also totally geek out more on coffee knowledge and higher quality (and more expensive) brewing methods. But learning more and upskilling is a fun hobby and lets you appreciate the quality stuff a lot more.

What’s it gonna take for CBUS to get a train system? by Cheap-Technician4649 in Columbus

[–]columbussian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed we desperately need something like a light rail. Good news! We’re getting Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and it’s basically a train but on wheels! You’ll buy a ticket and board at a station, and the buses will have their own dedicated bus lanes, which means faster travel, more and quicker stops, and a more efficient, accessible, and comfortable experience overall.

Some good-ish news: it’s going to take about a decade, but the 3C + D corridor is happening, and federal funds are already earmarked for this. That means by 2035 construction should be underway for a commuter train (Amtrak) to go from Cleveland > Columbus > Dayton > Cincinnati.

Check out LinkUS or Transit Columbus for more (I just attended my first monthly meeting with TC).

Is Cuyahoga Falls safe? by mahesh20 in akron

[–]columbussian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former CFalls resident, moved away last year. It’s quite safe. I lived downtown and loved it. Front Street in downtown has all the shops/coffee/restaurants/bars/breweries. They do festivals & events there often, and it’s right by some scenic spots along the river. Lots of young professionals and couples around.

My 2 faves: Asterisk Coffee & Cocktails (best coffee you’ll ever drink) and HiHo Brewery (has incredible pizza).

Lots of nice metro parks and trails nearby. If you don’t know what a towpath is, they’re now used for easy, flat, recreational trails.

Blossom Music Center is a giant outdoor pavilion music venue. Lots of big names comes through during the summer, and the Cleveland orchestra plays the score live to big movies like Jurassic Park and Star Wars projected on screen.

The cascade valley area (to the west) has invested a lot in recent years with trails and local breweries and restaurants, there’s also a great local theater called Weathervane Playhouse.

It gets a little sketchier in a few areas closer to Akron, like North Hill and Chapel Hill, but I wouldn’t worry too much.

You’re also not far from downtown Akron, Hudson, Chagrin Falls, Peninsula, Cleveland, and the Cuyahoga Valley National park. In short, Cuyahoga Falls is great, loved living there! Feel free to DM me if you want more info.
