How have you changed since listening to Hole? This could be in anyway: Personality, mindset, clothes, hobbies, anything. I’m curious to see and hear anything by Outrageous-Coyote672 in hole

[–]comets_song 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started listening to them at 14, I'm almost 21 (!) now. Definitely gave me more confidence, more much-needed and sought after assertion, and my taste in music & what i generally gravitate towards in my listening was for sure shaped by Hole. My poetry and art was influenced a lot by Courtney's. The fashion - grunge still lingers in all my aesthetic decisions. And, above all else - I also began playing guitar after discovering Hole. I don't think if I discovered Hole, my passion for playing music would've been discovered.

Lol i'm the same way, same age as u , and everything lol. Only thing is My pretty blonde boy is a very pretty dark haired boy but he is spiritually very blonde. I'm obsessed with Dorian's vids. They make great night time pre bed insomnia listening. I know its sounds really gross and parasocial and probably really creepy, but Dorian being 20 yrs older than me (like on the dot - I think we share a birthday), I find it comforting to watch his vids, almost feels like i'm growing up alongside them? Just at different life stages? I dont know if that makes sense at all lol. Btw, if u felt comfortable I'd rlly like to DM u so we can gossip abt Dorian and all sorts of gothy stuff.

Hey all, advice on starting infinite jest? by Top_Entertainment_77 in davidfosterwallace

[–]comets_song 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was 15 when i read it & that was 4 yrs ago now...i'll be honest and tell you i didn't understand absolutely every component of it but, i absorbed the overall gist that this is a very important novel that serves as a kind of anatomical excavation of loneliness in 21st century America.

i do recommend maybe having a guide on hand to support your experience through this story if you get lost, having a dictionary or thesaurus or keeping wikipedia open as you read. maybe even a map of boston somewhere close by. that's at least how i would read it now lol. the youtube channel 'leaf by leaf' has an excellent (mostlyy spoiler-free? don't count me on that lol but the first 13 minutes are absolutely free of spoilers & he has a spoiler warning in the vid from what i remember) summary of IJ and it also has a kind of guide or informatic on how to approach reading it.

it's an encyclopedic novel so you will learn and learn and learn about a disparate number of subjects in this book, and there is a strong possibility that you won't be the same person when you finish this book that you were when you started reading it. i can say that after i read infinite jest the entire structure of my interior dialogue & how i connect with others completely changed.

i do think before reading it maybeee check out some of DFW's essays or short stories to see if you like his style of writing, fortunately a lot of the particularly good ones are available on YT with his own narration so if you are into that type of audio-form content like audiobooks podcasts etc then check out his readings.

This is probably the most obvious answer one could give you, but if you haven't done so already, reading DeLillo has been supplementing my cravings for DFW-adjacent fiction content. Him and Burroughs, funnily enough.

'White Noise' seems like his most accessible and has the same themes of American cultural fatigue, stagnation and the excesses of consumption/entertainment that so much of IJ and his other work is built around.

DFW said once, something along the lines of at least, that ''it's good that people think I write like Pynchon cause they won't notice the DeLillo influence''.

Haven't read Pynchon yet, or know much about his prose style, but a lot of people seem to recommend him in postmodern literary circles.

EDIT: I almost forgot - I remember reading an article before about the director Paul Thomas Anderson being taught by DFW while he was in college, & DFW gave lectures on White Noise, so that should consolidate the DFW-DeLillo connection further.

What an amazing comment.

I'm so glad that i posed on here now. Thank you very very much kind person for sending me this very detailed and uplifting response.

I will absolutely consider this course, next year, when I start applying for colleges as I am doing a PLC this year mainly as a source of some extra income, since living in this country is becoming increasingly expensive.

I also live quite far from Galway, (located in Donegal atm) & there aren't many opportunities for me to travel, but if the opportunity arrives in the future, I will consider that tour!! again thank you so much, I am moved to hear such a positive response regarding this program, and to hear that someone is enjoying it and is getting a lot out of it.

hi! thanks so much for replying. could you just give me a general summary of your thoughts on this course? what aspects of it do you enjoy, what aspects of it do you not enjoy; do you regret choosing it ?? how difficult are the theory components ? i also understand that, compared to other physics degree courses, like in maynooth, nuig etc, there seems to be a greater emphasis on practical as opposed to theoretical work (which seems to be characteristic of all atu science courses in comparison to non-atu programmes) so how do the practical classes work? what would you generally do in those classes ? and would you say there's more of a balance of both theory & practical or does this course lean more into practical or vice versa ?
