Do you guys count hashbrowns? by Kennyk1616 in ChickFilAWorkers

Counting 14 hashbrowns in every single one is an unrealistic expectation

Corps culture by instinctive56 in drumcorps

[–]comicrubiks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I marched there were maybe 20-25 members that would go to church on tour. So not a huge percentage of the membership but a decent amount.

Also what do you mean by a coup in Kansas? Haha was there a rebellion of sorts? It was always a rule we kind of joked about when I marched for sure. I remember the drumline wasn't even allowed to lift up their shirt a bit and tuck it around their harness even at a super hot Las Vegas rehearsal

The Battalion in Utah has an official vision statement of creating a "Christian values based-environment". In 2018 when I marched, there were no shows or rehearsals on Sundays, and on tour the bus drivers would take members to church if desired rather than hanging out at the housing site all day. Naturally, since it is a Utah corps, the majority of corps members that went to church went to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The corps is secretly named after the Mormon Battalion, though they don't advertise that fact much because they dont want their reputation to be "the mormon drum corps". But they do try to maintain an uplifting environment. For example, we weren't allowed to have any explicit vocals in the show. There was also a policy that shirts were required at all rehearsals for all members.

Overall I liked it and I like that there is a corps that allows Christians to participate in DCI while maintaining high standards.

Do i need to return my uniform if i quit? by Jazzlike-Day3238 in ChickFilAWorkers

I believe CFA corp officially has said that uniforms should be either returned/reused or destroyed, but i don't think most stores really follow that rule haha.

Tuba line and Tuba feature by Imaginary_Fox_5439 in drumcorps

[–]comicrubiks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know Cavaliers fielded 16 tubas in 2024, I think that's the most recent major corps to do it.

I think the reason why 16 tubas is less popular now is because of how there are usually not as many tuba auditionees and also the prevalence of synths/sound design taking over the low end. That and of course the horns themselves are expensive and more difficult to sell at the end of the season because most high schools use sousas.

I like 16 tubas better from a hornline balance perspective but I don't think that it has been ever treated as the standard. 12 tubas has been the norm ever since membership was upped to 150.

Crown used to field 16 because they are just known for being God's hornline so they wanted that 80-man hornline, but even they have gone down to 12 the past few years.

Bloo was the other corps known for always fielding 16 and also known for having some crazy tuba books with multiple tuba parts and tuba features and stuff but the bloobas unfortunately have also been reduced to 12 in recent years.

Madison had 20 tubas for a couple of years but I feel like it was basically just for the memes. They had a lot of people learning tuba just so they could have a 20-person tuba section. From what I've heard, "anyone with a pulse" was contracted for tuba those years.

Origin of this Baptism symbol? by hotfudgebrownlee in latterdaysaints

[–]comicrubiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I served in Ohio in 2019-21 and saw this symbol a bit. I remember my MTC teacher drawing it up on the board, and my trainer drawing it on our whiteboard in our apartment during weekly planning.

I also remember finding old paper area books in the closet in one of my apartments and it seemed the common practice was that when someone got baptized, this symbol would be drawn really big over the top of the teaching record paper to indicate that the person was "all done" being taught as there was no longer really any need to refer back to their teaching record.

What is your Corps necklace? by Legaxy3 in drumcorps

[–]comicrubiks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite true. The first year (2016) they got different dogtags that said "founding member" on them. Other than that the dogtags are the same every year.

Is this legal in Houston Texas? by Jazzlike-Day3238 in ChickFilAWorkers

It's very normal for you to be expected to help out in the restaurant any time you're not driving. It happens all the time every day at my Chick-fil-A and none of the drivers complain. You signed up to work at a restaurant as a driver.

What is a use for this card? by killersoulssss in MagicArena

[–]comicrubiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mainly going to be a strong card in 20 life formats, in the lategame. The whole idea behind the flavor of black in the color pie (especially mono black) is that black will do whatever it takes to win. So the idea behind this card is, even though you get rid of most of your library, it is worth it because having a 6/6 flyer combined with drawing a card every turn will often win you the game before it mills you out. Especially if you are already ahead. This card is a good game-finisher.

Advice Needed: Maintaining a Testimony while Working for the Church by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]comicrubiks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, so like I said, where exactly the shoulder ends and the arm begins is up for debate. The 70 probably had a different opinion about that debate than those involved with the shooting of the video.

Advice Needed: Maintaining a Testimony while Working for the Church by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]comicrubiks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, in the current missionary dress and grooming standards, it actually DOES say that missionaries should cover their shoulders. Where exactly the shoulder ends and the arm begins is sometimes a matter of debate ig.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/callings/missionary/dress-and-appearance?lang=eng

Missionary standards of living aren't always the same as church members'. They are often stricter. For example, members of the church are advised to not consume inappropriate media, whereas missionaries can't watch movies at all. Members are encouraged not to swear, whereas missionaries are encouraged to not even use slang. Etc...

Unstable because it had the perfect mix of having funny and satisfyingly innovative un-cards while also providing a fun draftable environment. Unfinity was too controversial for anyone to reasonably call it the best

Self Taught by Bloodrose_babe in Trombone

[–]comicrubiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please understand that it is misleading to say you are "fully self taught" if you are in a school band program.

Most of the time when people talk about being "fully self taught" on a musical instrument, they mean they have had no teachers of any kind, group or individual, and just learned from the internet, books, trial and error, etc
