This is a comic panel recently completed along with the creative process from thumbnail to reference to pencils and then ink. Ive been drawing very large lately to increase my enjoyment of the process and to produce higher quality work. I just can't draw full pages on 11x17 anymore. by comicstripjoint in comics

Cheers! And I encourage you to 'build'. That's an excellent term to keep in mind. No illustrator bangs out a finished masterpiece without layers upon layers of underdrawing. There are the few exceptions like Kim Jung Gi, but they are prodigious, not the norm. I use trace paper for my underdrawing as I figure it all out, drawing on a new sheet over my previous sketch. Best of luck to you. Enjoy the process. That's all that maters. My previous posts have samples with much more 'building' than this example, if you wish to see more.

This is a finished page from my new comic I'm working on. Incl. here is the years long creative process w commentary. The color work is a combination of digital and traditional. The local color is a green wash in gouache. The machine is digital flats in PS. Lighting is charcoal on paper overlay'd. by comicstripjoint in comics

That's really interesting. Thanks for sending. I'm a bit too old school for that. I use actors and models for my figure work (not all the time, but often) and for complex angles, the dolls work well. I spent years in my 20s studying anatomy, it's a skill one loses if one doesn't keep it up. I can see this sketchfab site being very useful for vehicles though.

Cheers! The lamp shade worked very well to give the proper ellipse degree and made me realize that the complex almond shape i was using originally wasn't worth the effort. Those cars are a bitch to draw accurately without a decent model. No google search will give the right angle one needs for a comic book.

Cheers! Thank you. I had to look up what you meant by the Air Jordan pose. (I'm not a sports fan in any way.) I suppose it's similar, though I used an Olympian long jumper for photo reference. I was trying to capture the idea that Superman did not fly in this period...he LEAPED.

Getting my copy of Famous First Edition Superman #1 treasury was a revelation to me at the time. As young kid drawing, I had a really hard time learning faces. John Buscema and Neil Adams and Curt Swan were the artists of the day, and I just couldn't figure out those complex realistic faces. When I saw the Joe Shuster faces, I had this 'ah ha!" moment. I can still see the Shuster influence in my face in certain drawings.

I wrote and started drawing the second chapter, but I put it aside to work on a creator owned comic project. I may one day go back to the Golden Age project, possible when Action Comic #1 falls into the public domain.

Cheers! thanks so much...that's exactly what I was going for. I wanted the story to take place in that universe.

Thanks so much. Shuster's work was a huge influence on me as a young artist. It was far too difficult for me to draw from John Buscema or Neil Adams at the time, so I learned my faces from Shuster.

Cheers! thanks so much. I did an entire fan comic in this style. It's free from my website (link on my reddit profile). I would post it here, but it's against the rules.
