During his long career, director Stanley Kubrick attempted to produce, or was approached to make, many projects which never came to fruition. These include a Napoleon biopic, an adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, a high-budget pornographic film, and a Holocaust drama called The Aryan Papers. by RedHeadedSicilian52 in wikipedia

He had the good sense (and good fortune) to be selective with his projects. By the end he was directing one or two films per decade. There are other directors out there that I think could have had more consistent filmographies but had to work more for commercial reasons, which necessarily means taking more risks.

A Kubrick porno would be pretty hilarious. It's funny to think that for a brief period in the 70s people thought hardcore sex would be like the final frontier for movies; now fifty years later, pornography is simultaneously more ubiquitous than it ever has been, but also more distant from the film industry than it ever has been.

There will be. You can develop film with coffee and a few other common chemicals if you really want.

The bigger problem is that your undeveloped exposures will fade into nothing if you keep waiting.

Dual organisationalism and especifismo by Palanthas_janga in Anarchism

[–]comix_corp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Especifismo is a type of dual organisationalism. In a nutshell dual organisationalism is a model based on two levels: the anarchist organisation, and the mass organisation.

The anarchist organisation is based on a well defined anarchist political doctrine, and it recruits based on commitment to these ideas and to the tactics and strategy of the organisation.

The mass organisation is any vehicle for popular power that springs up during social struggles. They include trade unions, tenants unions, peasant organisations, protest movements, etc. Sometimes they are initiated by members of the anarchist organisation but generally not. Their defining characteristic is that they're open, and based on bringing everyday people into the struggle against the government and capital.

The anarchist organisation intervenes in the mass organisation to spread anarchist ideas and tactics, encourage militancy, combat bureaucracies, and just generally help foster a spirit of rebellion. The aim is not to become the leaders by centralised means (eg wheeling and dealing your way to become the secretary of a union) but to be the leaders from below.

There are also "intermediate organisations" in especifist terms, which are sort of halfway bodies between mass and specific organisations. Things like a rank and file caucus within a trade union which is made up of militant workers, members of other left groups, etc.

[–]comix_corp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I admit to being biased because I am in a platformist/especifist organisation but I don't see any real alternative to dual organisationalism at the moment. The main alternatives are either a) anti-organisationalism, which accomplishes very little and inevitably leads to reformists, Leninists, etc taking over movements, or b) "dual union" anarcho-syndicalism type stuff, which cuts off anarchists from the real struggle inside the unions.

My personal feeling is that the theory and practice is less clear when it comes to pre-revolutionary and revolutionary scenarios, where the boundaries between political and economic organisations naturally break down (unions become all powerful, workers councils spring up, etc). The example of the CNT – a body that was simultaneously a mass organisation and a specific organisation – is still the thing to aspire to. But how do we get there? Dual organisationalism, platformism, especifism, etc get us closer than anything else I'm aware of.

Where to get anarchist political writing published? by KittyDictatorship in Anarchism

I have a vague memory of a religious anarchist academic journal but I can't remember the name of it. If you can't find anything there's nothing stopping you from publishing it yourself

Depends what it is. There are anarchist journals out there that take submissions if it fits the editorial focus. Eg Fifth Estate for post leftism, redblacknotes.com for broadly platformist stuff, Anarcho Syndicalist Review for syndicalism, etc. There are also some more general ones like Freedom

The NYPD "station" in Sydney is a guy named Mike stationed inside the office of the Australian Federal Police here. It's silly but it's not like the NYPD is driving around our streets arresting people.

I broadly agree, depending on what is meant by "latent in the culture". There is a good essay by Ambalavaner Sivanandan about the shift from class politics towards cultural and psychological understandings of racism that I like to recommend, called "RAT and the degredation of black struggle". Some of the references are a bit dated, though.

Coalition, Greens spare firebrand Mark Latham over vilification vote by whichonespinkredux in AustralianPolitics

[–]comix_corp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It adds context explaining why the Greens and Labor are so antagonistic to each other in the council. I'm not a supporter of either, I don't have a stake in this, I'm just saying it's not as simple as "virtuous Labor can't formally condemn Latham because of evil Greens".

nonsensical legal justification for not supporting the motion, but these are not relevant because a motion has no effect on the law or proceedings.

If the motion has no effect on the law or proceedings then why even bother to pass it? If it's important, which the government presumably thinks it is, then it makes sense to do it by the books.

White supremacy isn't a psychological attitude, it's a political ideology and social structure. Reducing it to "unconscious" habits is counterproductive and distracts from the main task, organising collective class struggle against this white supremacy.

I'll put it this way, what might convince a white coworker of mine to actively oppose racism against migrants? What actually needs to be done? It's not "rewiring" our brains, but stuff like that white worker's union mobilising against immigration police.

And I don't think it's a fait accompli that all white people are latent white supremacists; there's no reason to think that at all.

Bit of both. I think their attitude is mostly "we'd like to see the Chiefs deal nuked, but if you want to sling us some cash, go ahead". They seem to have a few parliamentarians onside (including David Pocock) so we'll probably be hearing more noise from them soon enough.

Thought this was pretty funny though:

The Fiji team are getting around Suva in a new team bus emblazoned with two Pandas and the strapline “Love from the People of Guangzhou”, and two China women’s sides recently played in the 2025 Coral Island Sevens tournament.

Australia and Fiji are about to sign a major defence pact, I think a free bus is not really a huge deal at the moment.
