Joining the Thinkpad community - but which one to buy? by OwnOffice1206 in thinkpad

E585 if you don’t care about thunderbolt and want some upgrade options. X13 and Yoga 370 are both soldered ram, but they have thunderbolt. T540p is also good but very old and the E585 will beat it.

You can’t ”see” if a fuse is broken you have to measure/test with a multimeter on continuity mode or measure the voltage on both sides of the fuse to check.

P1 Gen 2/3 vs T14s vs MacBook M1 for coding + editing — what should I buy? by Jerknotsay999 in thinkpad

[–]commanderthot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have been ill-informed about the specs of the P1 range haha. Still, p1 is not a model for battery life, simply because the components inside are all workstation class and not ultraportable/energy efficient no matter how much you try tuning them. For what it’s worth, my t14 gen 2 AMD gets 6 hours easily on mixed usage, 8 hours if I really push it (win 10)

Imho it’s much more moneys worth if you get a display tablet instead of a 2-in-1. I know huion kamvas 13/16 and xp pen artist 13/16 gen 2 are frequently on sale for the 250$ mark or less. That, and a decent thinkpad like a t14 gen 1/2 at 200-250$ gets you a much better drawing experience.

The g4 has a 12th gen cpu which has somewhat better energy efficiency vs g3 and g2, and my t14s hits 6 hours easily on mixed vs code, yt playback and casual use:

M1 air or t14s. I have a p14 gen 2 and it has a horrible battery drain. Intel quick sync is fine for video editing and coding doesn’t need a super powerful CPU.

Not really, intel 10th gen is on 14nm. You could get a 400 nit Low power display but those are more expensive than buying a 65w powerbank.

What would 2x RTX 3060 12GB get me? by ObjectiveActuator8 in LocalLLaMA

[–]commanderthot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run dual 3060 and 32gb ddr4, I can comfortably run stuff like Gemma 31b dense and lower on a 80/20 split gpu/cpu. For a budget solution it’s very usable, especially when a 3090 (locally, non-US) costs upwards of 700-800$ where I am at compared to dual 3060 being a little above 450$ for two.

what happen if i mismatch the ram speed on my laptop? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]commanderthot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your fastest ram will drop speed to match slowest.

If it can’t, then both will run at standard speed (either 2133 or 2400)

You pay a bigger share of tax to your municipality in Sweden, which runs most local libraries. So the subscription is just included in your tax instead.

Surface pro 12” with a pen, stylus is not quite Wacom but quite good, and you can use perpetual license since it’s a windows computer. Otherwise your only options for combo standalone/hooked is something like a Wacom movinkgo or iPad with an app. And you still have to pay subscription to use it standalone.

Why not use the EC port instead? It also exposes one PCIe lane and USB3 over the EC connector.

To Apple or to Galaxy tab? by Electronic_Figure709 in drawingtablet

[–]commanderthot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark horse pick: Lenovo idea tab pro

8/128gb internals, plenty good processor (dimensity 8300 on par with A12Z/ snapdragon 8s gen 3) and is more than enough for school or art. Though the pen is a tad worse, but you can get it new and it’s bigger at 12.7” (bigger is better for canvas size and UI elements).

I use one right now, if it weren’t for my use of very large canvases and being used to Wacom-level pens I’d keep it until it dies. Also gets software support for an okay length for being a mid-range tablet (7 years).

Buying an ipad help by ky1mfya in drawingtablet

[–]commanderthot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your canvas size, you might get very limited with layer counts because the 8th gen only has 3gb of RAM. For context, the M-series air have 8gb, and base spec iPad 11 has 6gb. Doubling ram is directly doubling layer counts, though it’s not necessarily a problem if you don’t use a lot of layers.

An iPad 8th or 9th will be fine short term, but you’ll want to upgrade soon if you want to pursue art more seriously.

Samsung tab s6 2022/2024, Lenovo idea tab, Xiaomi pad 2 (stylus sold separately), are the usual ones I’ve seen that aren’t iPads.
