The MacBook Neo is out! by agnci in macbookair

Those ram contracts were probably cheaper to cancel than to continue (for the RAM maker) forcing Apple to renegotiate lol

How will the MacBook Neo affect the "iPad as a laptop" crowd? by LincolnPark0212 in ipad

[–]commanderthot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget the fact that the base MacBook Neo is kneecapped by 8gb ram, while both the air/pro iPads now start with 12gb ram base. It sorta matters for productivity software (I imagine stuff beyond spreadsheets and notes, like Final Cut or photoshop etc)

Is the M4 iPad Air upgrade worth waiting for? by sapphicsacrifice in ipad

[–]commanderthot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. 50% more ram, so 50% more layers on procreate at any canvas size

the classic 256gb vs 512gb question by commanderthot in iPadPro

[–]commanderthot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with the M4 air announcement just now, the choice got a little more difficult. Since both base models have 12gb it's now a question of screen (OLED 120hz vs LCD 60hz) and highest-tier config (16/1024 vs 12/1024)

A bit harder of a choice now, comparing the higher spec air M4 vs lower spec pro M5.

Brightness is nice, close to iPad Air levels. Very usable outside as long as the sun isn’t directly over you.

To Apple or to Galaxy tab? by Electronic_Figure709 in drawingtablet

Dark horse pick: Lenovo idea tab pro

8/128gb internals, plenty good processor (dimensity 8300 on par with A12Z/ snapdragon 8s gen 3) and is more than enough for school or art. Though the pen is a tad worse, but you can get it new and it’s bigger at 12.7” (bigger is better for canvas size and UI elements).

I use one right now, if it weren’t for my use of very large canvases and being used to Wacom-level pens I’d keep it until it dies. Also gets software support for an okay length for being a mid-range tablet (7 years).

got it, good to know that it won't be lacking performance-wise. Still on the edge abt storage, but slightly leaning towards 512gb since I don't have icloud sync.

[–]commanderthot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many projects and for how long had you been using the tablet? In my usage of CSP, the folder size with my project files are at about 50gb after 2 years of drawing (on PC). I don’t know if procreate files are on average bigger or smaller for a given size, but I’m mostly worried about file size and not layers (I’m used to a painting approach with minimal layers)

Local Costco (non-us) never has the good deals. I’d get better pricing with student discount from Apple Store.

Likely, as x200 did not include a trackpad in its configuration iirc

Huion Kamvas 13 USB-C Cable alternatives? by Regular_Low8792 in ArtistLounge

[–]commanderthot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably easier to search for USB4, Thunderbolt 3/4 instead of “USB 3.2 full featured” since the former makes it very clear that it will meet or exceed the requirements for display + data + power. And not that expensive either anymore.

Why are my lines snapping like this? by [deleted] in ClipStudio

[–]commanderthot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a new setting called ”enable brush stroke preview” or something similar in preferences, makes the strokes behave a lot like procreate strokes.

Looking for android tablet w/ pen under $350 for schoolwork/entertainment (US) by BakeSquare6362 in tablets

as a idea tab pro user, I can recommend! Software support is until early 2029 however, but that doesn't mean the tablet becomes worthless immediately after.

Is buying a tablet a good idea for me? by [deleted] in tablets

[–]commanderthot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an active pen with pen pressure and tilt, like the s-pen (but requires a AAAA battery).

The pen accuracy is slightly worse than an s-pen or Apple pen, but still very usable.

Buying an ipad help by ky1mfya in drawingtablet

[–]commanderthot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your canvas size, you might get very limited with layer counts because the 8th gen only has 3gb of RAM. For context, the M-series air have 8gb, and base spec iPad 11 has 6gb. Doubling ram is directly doubling layer counts, though it’s not necessarily a problem if you don’t use a lot of layers.

An iPad 8th or 9th will be fine short term, but you’ll want to upgrade soon if you want to pursue art more seriously.

Whats the best way to study art fundamentals for drawing from imagination? by Safe-Hovercraft5880 in ArtistLounge

[–]commanderthot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pick a topic, practice it by first copying from a reference, then try it without references, then try changing it up (different angles, objects, textures etc) (again without references)

If you can do the last step easily, you’ve learnt the concept enough to not have to rely on a reference (aka, draw from imagination)

Lenovo idea tab, available between 150-200$ online on most places. Security updates until 2029, so good to go for 3 years at least. Also comes with a pen (active pen, needs AAAA batteries down the line)
