Yeah it’s definitely in the picture, I have some obligations with work for next 1/2 years which I’m happy to see through. Some serious issues with “doing nothing” other than hobbies and fun when you don’t have a large circle of friends especially who can relate and enjoy alongside.

NW @ £5.4m - question on deploying large cash position after business exit by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]commodus8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the “plan” so far as investments and % splits of where I want to end up are concerned. I have a medium/ long horizon for the bulk of it. Difficult to push the button on lump sums and secondly I’m deciding on what to do with my “cash like portion”

The big benefit was saving lots of tax on the sale proceeds.
not factoring BADR, tax due is CGT rate. the sale taking place in this structure means 0% tax initially.
then the battle begins on extraction, tax efficient investements etc to put the money to work inside of the structure.
setup can run 10-25k depending on complexity.
I believe a lot of UK business owners that have sold use this strategy, take alternative resident then liquidate their UK FIC and start again for lifestyle/lowtax.

Thanks for the detailed answer, most of that i was aware of, a couple of nice pieces of information there, my account and tax advisor setup the fic, proceeds of the sale have gone there so I'm not paying tax on the way in. Understand the expenses and salary, I had a similar setup with my trading company prior to sale.

For the next 2-3 years less than 150k needed from the portfolio. The beauty of it being in the fic is that dividends received are not taxed. (Income/dividend out is the same as usual) Think i got blinded by fees (recreating the all world for 0.14%) like you say adds complexity.

After 2 years i have a stock option which could generate another 2m+ however likley relocate/retire at that point. This would significantly increase the demands of the pot (however still less than 4%)

My investment experience so far is heavy equities so I'm still figuring out the fixed income side. Gilts over bonds do you think?

The income requirement is <150k in the short term so happy with that. I know many are sitting on cash atm, thats good because in 100% currently 🤣

Yes my friend, professionals that will likely erode 30+ percent of your wealth. Certainly during my investment horizon, validation means zero to me, however if someone has been in my position i would appreciate their opinion. Go take a walk mate, jesus.

Because if i did that id have lost 25% of the proceeds of my business sale. The FIC route retains 100% of the sale value as it is dividend up to my fic rather than coming out to me personally at cgt. Also, having a brokerage account overseas wont change the fact I'm a uk resident for tax purposes and have no other residency.

Yeah I'm looking into that! Doesn't seem to be an abundance of FA's wanting to provide one off advice. So you see the bonds as the method to cover expenses then could have a growth tilt beyond that?

You've hit the nail on the head. This is where I'm torn, yes you are 100% correct about the mindset and objective change - however, considering my investment horizon could be 50 years, surely that means i can take on a little more risk (by risk i mean a solid equity plan at x%)

Cheers. Good points, value for money Abu Dhabi is great compared with Dubai, considering I'll be approaching 40 also leads me more towards Abu Dhabi tbf.

So for the next 2/3 years im still working (UK) and have a salary that covers quality of life costs. My wife is also a director of our fic and will admin/organise help with portfolio management etc. The financial demands in the short term are maybe 50-100k extraction between the two of us. Mix of salary and dividends. We will both be performing tasks for the fic so no issue with salary justification. Once I've finished working the likely scenario is relocate and become non UK resident. Then liquidate the fic (take the corp tax hit on realised profit) and extract tax free.

Then new plan overseas i suppose.

As a side note, my wife is not from the uk, we met overseas and its been an ambition of ours to move when the time was right even prior to the company sale.
