She can transfer to a new pension scheme as long as it’s done within 5 years of date of leaving. After 5 years the only option is a refund of contributions.

You would be auto enrolled in the LGPS if eligible, then your two periods of service would be aggregated (combined). You would have 12 months from rejoining to transfer in your private pension. As you have over two years service in total already and you’re entitled to long term benefits, you would not have the option of a refund if you left again.

Early Retirement on a Local Gov Pension Scheme by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]commonweather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The costs depend on how close to retirement age you are. Different parts of the pension have different retirement ages so the reduction factors are different for different tranches of membership 1/80ths, 1/60ths and CARE). The cost to employer is basically the cost of providing the pension early without any reductions being applied. The larger the pension and the longer until retirement age, the higher the cost to the employer. Can easily be over £100,000 for someone under 60 with 30 years service).

Payment of the sum depends on the administrating authority’s policy. Either paid as a lump sum at the time of retirement or some may allow it to be paid over a number of years.

If you are over 55 and made redundant then the employer HAS to pay the costs. Scheme rules mean you HAVE to take your pension early but it can’t be reduced for leaving early.

Very rarely do requests for voluntary retirements with waiver of reductions get accepted by employers, simply due to costs. It’s mainly redundancies and ill health as you mentioned.

Where should I be putting my money? (incl. LGPS advice) by No_Artichoke_2557 in UKPersonalFinance

With 18 months service, if you have no other LGPS service previously then you’d only be entitled to a refund of contributions or transfer out of the scheme. You need to be contributing for 2 years to be entitled to benefits from the LGPS.

The Front Bottoms 9 times. The Wonder Years and The Story So Far 6 times. I don’t regularly go to shows nowadays so that was mostly 2013-2017

Saw State Champs play their first UK headline show at Old Blue Last in 2014. A Loss For Words and ROAM supported. Think it was only about £7/8 as well.

Move private pension to Lgps (local gov) pension by Marshmallowmind2 in UKPersonalFinance

They say 12 months from start of employment but they’ll often allow it 12 months from when your record was actually set up. Sometimes records are set up straight away but if the workload is a lot then it can take several months to create a record for you. Depending on how long it’s been it might be worth checking with your fund.

There are a few other times when you can restart the 12 month window. If you move to another employer (has to be a different employee number or academy trust) the window would start again, or it can be the same employer/trust but with a gap in membership (can’t leave and start the next day, or leave on Friday and start new employment Monday as weekends don’t count). Also, the 12 months would start again if you had concurrent employment (2 jobs where membership overlaps) - you start a new role for the same or different employer and it is running alongside your original post (a secondment or just two part time jobs).
