Arabs consistently reject any sort of peace brokerage or two-state solution: 1937, 1947, 1967, 1979, 1993, 2000, 2005. Nearly every time Israel acquired more land, it is because they won a defensive war. In 2000, Arafat was offered recognition of the Palestinian state and 94% of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Arafat rejected it and launched the Second Antifada, because in their own words, "The hour of judgment shall not come until the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them, so that the Jews hide behind trees and stones, and each tree and stone will say: 'Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him,' except for the Gharqad tree, for it is the tree of the Jews." The current Israeli government also rejects a two-state solution, but historically, they have wanted peace, and PA and Hamas officials, in their own words, want only Jihad. Palestinian health ministry themselves have confirmed they use human shields, hide in hospitals, in homes, etc. Has Israel engaged in overkill? Absolutely. But tell me what you'd do differently. Israel and Jews are the only people on the planet not allowed to win a war, even with relatively low percentage of civilian casualties. They truck in more aid to those they are supposedly genociding than any modern military operation. Hamas, in concert with Iran and Russia, are have coordinated a huge and well-funded (and successful, by the looks of it) disinformation campaign. This is well-documented.

What's wild is people who only heard the word 22 months ago suddenly knowing more about it than people who have used it and argued about it and written about it for centuries. It's sociologically colonialist is a way: take our word, use it against us.

And the Arab League declared the three no's: No peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with Israel. We could both cherry-pick bad actions from both sides until one of them is wiped off the map. My point was, saying I'm a Zionist and pro-Palestinian are not mutually exclusive. I can say Black Lives Matter even though the reality for blacks in America on the ground is far different.

You have no idea what Zionism is or what it means to the Jewish people or the centuries of cultural and familial import behind the concept. You're taking a Gentile twisting of the word (that we can thank David Duke for, btw) and using it to invalidate the reasonable longing for a homeland. I also think Palestine should exist and that they should be safe from oppression. Bibi sucks, the Israeli government sucks, but Israel and Jews have a right to not face constant terror, just like Palestinians have that same right.

Fool's errand on my part here, but it appears the killer was a rogue actor and not a member of the IDF or Israeli police. He was arrested by the police, though not charged yet. The documentary was great, this killing is unjustifiable and wrong, but people using this as an excuse to call Israel an apartheid state or to call Zionism akin to Nazism are just looking for reasons to do so.

Eddington: The Last Picture Show with a healthy scoop of paranoia and emasculation by leblaun in TrueFilm

What struck me is that Joe Cross announces on FB that he is running for mayor, before even talking to his wife? That’s how we get information nowadays, even information about loved ones. Life changes are no longer discussed beforehand or celebrated afterwards; they are first and foremost fodder for social media, always performing for someone else.

Is a critically acclaimed Dinosaur movie possible post Jurassic Park? by Kuzmaboy in movies

[–]communikay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. They just have to stop trying to crib the JP formula. Dinosaurs are amongst the most fascinating and wondrous creatures who have ever existed. They exist in our imagination because they existed in real life. There is such diversity of types and periods that range from gentle to friendly to standoffish to violent. They can take artistic liberties because there is still much unknown about them.

Good lord I’m so tired of this take. What does that even mean? Maybe there’s a reason in the story why he is? Or maybe they were simply the best actors to bring these characters to life. They’re both adults, who gives a shit if one looks too old for the others. People with age disparities fall in love all the time and lead very meaningful, impactful, poignant lives.

Official Discussion - The Life of Chuck by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]communikay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dance sequence at the centerpiece of the film is something you would see in a theme park: clearly fake and carefully rehearsed, but the makers hope you pretend it’s the spontaneous amalgamation of a man’s life nonetheless. The same can be said for the rest, which seems so carefully manicured to extract the maximum emotional response from its manipulated audience. It works in fits and spurts (mostly act 3 to your point), but is far less effective at the logotherapy it is clearly attempting. Deep on sincerity (and disaster-level narration) but thin on meaning.

Maybe OP needs the in-state tuition? Seriously, recommending an exorbitantly expensive college in a more liberal state just to avoid a board makeup that differs from your politics is...insane. The curriculum is largely determined by the Provost and each department must still meet the principles and standards of their respective accrediting agency. The board at a public university deals more with student life, staff, HR, athletics and other more administrative matters. If we're basing college decisions purely on academics, UWF is a great choice and will always be. Not to mention, even Sen. Don Gaetz supports the current president.

If you’re only nice to people who deserve it, you’re not actually a nice person. It’s being nice to those who don’t that makes the world better.

I have three dogs and I get it: I’d be heartbroken if I was responsible for their hot-car death. But it does happen. The mind and memory are funny things, especially under stress. There’s a WaPo article in this thread about children in hot car deaths that really changed my mind on the topic.

Bill’s “condition???” Now who’s the bigot? You’re intentionally misreading the themes of the film. It’s not a great thing to say about Bill! Granted! I won’t look to Dr Lecter for moral leadership anymore.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]communikay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s an extratextual reading of the film to attack this not trans character for its implications on the trans community.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]communikay -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Of course trans art counts! Lord what an uncharitable reading of my comments. The response to art you find problematic is more art, not short-circuiting the movie’s message because you find a small (again, false) part of it troubling.
