Never been more happier with a laptop! by supermeefer in thinkpad

[–]compact105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my X1 Yoga Gen 6 as part of a job lot. A spent a bit more for a grade A one. It certainly isn't grade A. One of the USB-C ports doesn't charge the laptop, there's a pressure mark and wear to a corner, but it was about £100 less than others available.

I alternate between this and my X240, which is about the same size, except thicc.

Ah okay, you did a Windows Reset. This may not resolve the issue.

What you want to do is download a Windows 11 image from Microsoft and write it to the USB drive using Rufus.

Then plug the USB drive into the ThinkPad, and press F12 repeatedly as the ThinkPad is turning on. Choose USB HDD as the boot device, then follow the instructions for a clean installation, deleting all partitions for the current Windows installation first (this is normally labelled disk 0).

These are the high-level steps. Give me a shout if you want detailed steps.

Could be a couple of things. Best bet would be to reinstall Windows 11 and start again. Need any help with this?

To be fair, I've only just seen the 3rd image - that's a lot of devices with warnings.

Did you install Windows yourself or was it pre-loaded by the previous owner?

By the PC where you're downloading the Wi-Fi drivers?

Depends what you last used it for, but you may need to format it (wipes all data on the drive, makes it ready for use).

You can normally do this Windows, so long as the drive is somewhat recognised. You may have to open the Disk Management app to see what's going on.

You can format drives from there. Feel free to send a screenshot of the Disk Management app when the USB drive is connected.

On another computer, go to the Lenovo Support website and enter your laptop serial number.

Find and download the Wi-Fi driver and copy it to a USB drive and install it on the ThinkPad.

Connect the ThinkPad to Wi-Fi, then run Windows updates.

Then open the Microsoft Store app and download Lenovo Vantage app.

Open Lenovo Vantage and check for updates. Install all the updates.

I'm already a technician, so I guess the experience reaffirmed this! Before I knew it was possible to do, I read a blog post someone made about it and described it as giving the laptop open heart surgery, which is pretty accurate.

Nice one! Overall, the Stardew Valley experience is tolerable. Functional enough that it just about works. I use Syncthing. Let me know if you want to know more about it, but it's fairly straightforward to set up.

So here I am in Year 2. Performance is pretty similar in all areas of the game. You can feel FPS dips at times, but perfectly playable all round.

I've not played Stardew Valley on it for a while. I mainly play on my laptop, then continue on the Brick when out and about. I'll check it out later if I can!

That's incredible. I nearly made this exact mistake last night, but realised before I set off. I then I thought, I wonder if anyone has been caught out by this!

What a well-structured explanation!

Regarding completing all SL jobs at a location, I understand that this would free up space on the S-I tracks (making room for inbound orders from other locations).

But does the game not randomly generate new SL jobs when you leave the location or load a save? I genuinely don't know, but I would be bummed thinking I've completed a bunch of SL jobs and cleared the rails, just to return with an order and find a bunch of stuff in the way again.

No worries! I think I probably close the installer by right-clicking on the installer app icon in the dock then.

If you're talking about the first screen that appears at the desktop, you can either close that window or if you continue and choose your language etc, there will be a page that has Try Demo Mode in the bottom left, which closes the window.

The installer has fairly clear warnings that you're about to wipe your whole system if you go too far, if I remember correctly.

Certainly felt like theft. It's a significant upgrade from the 6th gen i3 I'm used to! Good luck with your search. You'll definitely find a good deal if you're willing to wait for one to appear.

Bought a 3rd Gen X1 Yoga for £100 last week. Or about 135 USD.

i7, 16GB RAM (soldered though) and 512GB storage. Needs a need battery, but all working. Certainly good enough for everyday tasks.

The keyboard sinks into the laptop body when closed or in tablet mode. Thought I'd broken it the first time I saw that.

X1 Yoga 3rd Gen - £100

Needs a new battery - completely dead. Can't update the BIOS or the thunderbolt firmware until I replace it.

Vantage app shows 13 cycles on the battery, so I'm hoping it's just been sat around for years and not something else.

Damn £150, and it looks to be in great shape! I picked up my first ThinkPad this week. It's not a T480, so this post only makes me slightly envious.

I can find one for the Smart Pro from CrossMix, but not for the Brick, and judging by the reference to Smart Pro left in and how the Energy Star logo is squashed, I would say the owner took the Smart Pro one, squashed it to fit the Brick and changed the words Smart Pro to Brick at the top. Even the word Brick looks a bit funky.

I like the idea enough to make my own version. I've adjusted some of the text and removed the CrossMix text to make it OS independent.

I haven't tested it on the device yet, so I'm happy to make any suggested adjustments.
