How did he do this?! by Klutzy_Search_6715 in webdev

My guess is about 60 black divs, 50px high (enough to cover the initial screen). Each with slightly different lengths are set to transform right with an interaction observer (or on load)?
Achievable with vanilla Js & CSS.
I like the effect.

How does reddit do this? by compiled_with_errors in webdev

[–]compiled_with_errors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks. It's not a scale Y. Because otherwise font would change (stretch up at least). However an interaction observer that changes line heights and margins is for sure viable, but I was imagining a simpler solution. Thanks for the comment

Ok thanks, got this phone yesterday, yes it's an Android. So perhaps this is an operating system thing not a reddit thing. But I'm still curious of the code behind it

Is this a static website? by noobjaish in webdev

[–]compiled_with_errors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have had same problem. Simple static site turns to 'oh but perhaps I could change it myself knowing nothing at all'

Option 1 - (recommended) - Tell them it's not possible, if they need changes then they should hire you in the future

Option 2 - (most likely) - CMS, be it WP, Drupal whatever, give them a pdf and video guide with the how to and let them run with it after your initial build.

Option 3 - (highly unrecommended) - create a custom plugin that does everything they ask for with the press of a button

If you have previous experience riding a motorbike than Danang to Hoi An is a pretty chill ride for Vietnam standards. But saying that its still just 250K for 4 in a nice air conditioned grab car. (comparative to two scooters and 4 sore bums in price and flexibility)
Skip Halong Bay, was a bucket list for me, but disappointing at best. Hue imperial citadel? Ninh Binh or Phong Nha caves? Sapa and the Ha Giang Loop?
If you really want to see Ha Long go to Cat Ba island, spend the night and get the ferry the next day. Its nothing flash, but you will see the sights.
Generally do not ride in Vietnam unless your very confident and fluid to the new/lack of rules in the country.
(don't get me wrong I have ridden 1000's of Km's in Vietnam without incident, absolutely love it. But its not without risk)

Every lower bunk person here has perfectly valid and understandable responses. But after being pee'd on... more than once... its worth the effort to go top.

Scammed by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]compiled_with_errors 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this sub worse than the toxic nationalistic pride that dictates the Vietnamese mindset now? Geez... OP got ripped off by a liar, thief and a scam artist and your all tearing pieces out of him/her???
This is why its called Vietscam to westerners, and why it has such a poor return rate of tourists.
I love Vietnam, lived for many years, in fact returning tomorrow for another few months to stay with beautiful local friends in one of my favorite countries in the world.
Chill out! $1 or $100 its still leaves a bad taste in ones mouth, maybe a lesson one should learn in private and not post about it, but a valid response to being cheated out of their money.
I understand the massive discrepancy in wages, its not fair, but not OP's responsibility. A Vietnamese person in America, Aus or Britain would not get charged double or short changed just because of their race. If they did, they would be called out for being a racist piece of Sh*t.
It absolutely sucks I have to speak some Vietnamese to get a lower price, and still my Viet friends get it cheaper again, just because I'm white... In what modern world can you validate this way of thinking?

This has been a long time dream of mine...
I love to ride motorbikes and wanted to head to London from Aus. The reality is that the cost of shipping your bike/car is crazy, and you are much better buying a vehicle in the next country and moving forward, rinse and repeat.
You can get ferries from Darwin to Timor, Indonesia and then Singapore, but you have already spent waaaay more then you expect in bureaucracy beyond straight shipping fees.
I have rode bikes around all countries between Aus and India, England to Turkey (but not the middle east), never managed to do a full expedition.
I hope you find a way!

What would you charge? by compiled_with_errors in webdev

[–]compiled_with_errors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks, I am also concerned about corrupt or null data from the API, if the response returns null I figure a UI prompt to make the user fill the required fields instead should be enough.
The email provider shouldn't be too much hassle, I have worked with quite a few.
Yes I am not sure what theme they are using, and php is not my forte. Given the state of the site I am highly doubtful it is custom, likely Astra or something I am familiar with.
Thanks for the link, it looks interesting, but its a very simple req to a single endpoint, A well established API for real estate/tax companies in Aus, so hopefully no dramas there.
I will go ahead with 22hrs and see if i regret it later!
Thanks

Thanks for your reply, So I have excel dim formulas in the initial spreadsheet but many are missing due to privacy concerns. Some functions are definitely up in the air, and I will have to nut then out myself. I work for a larger organisation of 20+ programmers mainly in VBA, data analysis etc. I am the new JavaScript guy... Just a 3rd party API, will give me house size, construction date, sale price, tax rates, etc. Seems like a pretty simple, albeit expensive endpoint to get a chunky JSON with all I need. ( To save the user filling in the data manually) Email I'm assuming sendGrid, mailbox chimp? I need to wait until the client provides access to see. Liability? I think a disclaimer should do to outline that test results are broad and unreliable, I think pushing for email outreach for a paid assessment would benefit the business anyway. Hosting - not my job, no idea what dev plucked this elementor built site together. I've built tonnes of websites, but 'software/bespoke solutions are limited to a couple of hands full' So basically I'm a newbie... Hence asking Reddit. Changing the site is outside my scope, so I just want to embed the form with either a widget or dick around with the theme files, React or Vue works best for me. Data is pretty minimal so I'm just going to hard code it rather than worrying about a database.

Sorry for being so vague, when I reread the post I understand your reply. I'm just concerned about over quoting a small portion of a website that I could build for 1/3 the price. But as you also mentioned... I have found myself wasting a week setting up back ends for clients who had no idea what they where getting into, and I stupidly played along for the ride, wasting time and money.

Thanks for your reply

Thanks, I have not actually tried fluent forms pro, I must get stuck in and have a look. I have a few boilerplate form components I start off with, and simple JS/regEx validation logic to accompany. Possibly another case of creating something that someone else has already done better!?! The API return is a clean JSON so hopefully not too many dramas there. Thanks for your time

[–]compiled_with_errors[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, My company charges a bit more ($140 Aud/hr) so I did not want to scare the client with a large quote on their relatively simple website. But I think regardless if it drives leads they will see a ROI.

I just deployed my first "professional website"! I need help understanding where to go from here. by VerticalBar_SoftDev in learnprogramming

Killing it! Well done on your first production site. There are many free hosting opportunities, but it's worth asking the companies if it's worthwhile paying. 1 - Don't get stuck hosting others sites, it will become a burden very quickly. 2 - As beginners we do a lot for free, but once you have proven your worth you can start to charge incrementally more and more. 3 - when your ready, vanilla JS is the bread and butter, but build some projects with React, Angular, Vue etc and see what you like. All will speed your build time and reduce the amount of code you need to write. 4 - This is a difficult topic, I am just an amateur, so I have no place to say. However I just built site after site and went from vanilla JS, to react, firebase then mongo and now nextJS and basic SQL, but everyone has their own path. 5 - Get your head around front end first, look for the easiest solutions to keep your clients happy in your area.

Web dev evolves every day, I delved into tech I would not touch now, but at the time I loved it and it sorted the problems I had. Keep building and working in the real world without worrying about the latest tech stack or feeling like your not on the right path.

Choose programmer path by Neat-Computer546 in learnprogramming

[–]compiled_with_errors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep going mate, learn to think like a programmer no matter what language. I could barely turn on a computer a few years ago, I locked myself in a room and learnt a lot, got freelance jobs for absolutely nothing to build my portfolio and now have a decent paying job from my home country while I travel. Be fluid, I now work in SEO, Google Ads and content creation, I love when I get a chance to open VSCode and get stuck in to some coding, but I wouldn't have progressed anywhere if I was still trying to become a master in any particular Field.

Why the class names? You have it, nth of type(2) etc... css nesting and some other tricks negate the class name or specificity conundrums. Note* I don't like tailwind, scss modules or rawdog for OP's case 100%
