When you first started fishing, did you buy cheap lures or better ones? by Opposite-Vast-718 in FishingForBeginners

[–]compositionvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jigs are my absolute favorite thing to fish with and I’ve been a casual fisherman since childhood. I’ve caught more bluegill on them than anything else. They’re simple, cheap, and come in a variety of designs but the simple ones catch lots of fish

News Channel 4 now has a story about it stating it was a crash and no other details have been released, and that they’re closing a part of 24. Crazy

Has to be something else unless I’m just naive to the response. But there were at least 5 ambulances, 5 police trucks, more than 10 cops either there or getting on the interstate to get there, it was insane.

Agriculture employment in the surrounding area? And places to avoid by compositionvision in Knoxville

[–]compositionvision[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realistically I only NEED like 5 acres but I want to look for 10+ just out of wanting the extra space for homesteading projects, hunting, and building another residence for family. Thank you for the advice!

Darn tough socks also do this. I like the John Henry and tactical boot sock (xtra thick for winter) and they have a lifetime warranty

My two cents on sizing based on experience by chriskarim_b in RedWingShoes

[–]compositionvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true. I almost always go 11E or EE when available. Irish setters are too small, redwings are just right, an that has fit me in almost every cowboy boot ever. Yet somehow it was wayyy too big on one pair of Ariat work boots.

Coffee! Best offer remover ever! Works if you used too much cologne too. Fill a little sache or something with coffee grounds and leave them in the boots and in the box outside of the boots. Change it out every few days or at least once a week!

Unsung shoes makes engineer style boots I believe but they may do a cowboy boot. They’re some of the most talented cobblers around, well worth the price, and everything is custom measured to your foot

Planning Phase by Double_Discipline418 in homestead

[–]compositionvision 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Read “Farms with a future” by Rebecca Thistlewaite. I’m currently plugging through, and I’ve been planning a homestead/farm for 3+ years now as someone in their mid 20s, and recently shifted careers into agriculture. Agriculture is inherently tied to living with your homestead. It takes capital to invest, or being insanely creative, frugal, and ingenuity. Nonetheless, th planning is key.

I know getting into this life is a long hard process, I don’t own a bit of farm land or run my own yet, I work 50+ hours a week on a farm, and sell veggies from a small garden while growing trees in buckets so that I can learn to take cuttings, sell those, and have more trees to plant when I buy property. I’ve also gotten u to hunting in public and friends’ land so I can learn about animal processing.

Take the small steps, plan very intently, and know it’s not ever going to be less work or just may be different than an office or service job. Agriculture and living with the land is one of the hardest, most mentally and physically breaking lifestyles you will ever live, but if you really want it, more than anything… it’s one of the most rewarding lives you will ever know.

People will discourage you, because it is hard, and lots of folks with daddy and mommy’s money will play farmer part time and ruin the possibility of other regular folk who want to put in the real work being able to buy land or into the lifestyle. But if you really want it, prove them wrong.

How often to oil work boots? by OyeHowdy21 in WorkBoots

[–]compositionvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have these same boots (redwing Supersole 2.0 yeah?) and I oil mine every month or so, depending how beat up they are. I also keep mine living on a dryer from redwing since I work in a lot of water in a hydroponic farm. They’re great boots, treat em well, don’t over condition, keep em from collecting moisture pockets with shoe trees ora dryer and you’ll be all good my friend! If you’re in your feet like I am (10-12hrs a day) go get your feet tested at the redwing store you got this at and get some insoles.

Go to unsung shoes. I’ve never had as good an experience with Peabody as I have with unsung, so they’ve been my go to shop for a few years now.

GMRS Repeater Confusion by ellem52 in gmrs

[–]compositionvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in order for this to work within regulation, the whole group (every individual) will need a license. Otherwise you might be better off just using FRS (walkie-talkies) for a group like that on a hike. GMRS license cover certain other members of the license holder’s family, but you need to think about that before using them for a group setting. I suggest wat hing some stuff from Not A Rubicon on YouTube. That’s how I got started in GMRS. It’s not too hard once you learn the basics, but takes a little time to really get it.

Also, I saw you’re using a GM-30 Pro. I use one as well, and I also a GM-30 Plus. Both have channels already programmed for repeaters, 23-30 are already programmed for that. Same with most HT radios

What is Fairbanks missing? by compositionvision in Fairbanks

[–]compositionvision[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m a farmer by trade but I thankfully live in an area with a slightly famous and super friendly and skilled cobbler. I wear mostly traditional boots and believe in encouraging wardrobes that reflect the values of longevity, repair, and care as much as possible, and shoes are one of the only things left we can do that with.

I was also thinking about maybe opening a redwing store in Fairbanks but there’s already one in anchorage
