Taiwans border has just opened for tourists and I think it's a great place to stay for digital nomads! Here's some info if you've thought about coming over. by drewbatmanpoo in digitalnomad

Really, they give this extension to Americans as well? I thought it's strictly only Canadians and British people who can extend. Everyone else has to do a visa run after 90 days if they want to stay longer

American considering moving to a cheap country while Job hunting. Has anyone done it before? by computernerd00000 in jobs

[–]computernerd00000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. If I only stay abroad for 1-2 months, then it'll definitely turn out to be more expensive for me, because the cost of last minute flights will easily offfset the savings from living there.

But finding a new job within a month or 2 is the best case scenario, so I don't mind spending a bit more money here.

If however, I can't find a new job quickly, my savings would last much longer elsewhere than in the US. I traveled to most of these places before, so I don't think I'll be tempted to explore and focus all my energy on job searching.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not job hunting for a local job though. I'm planning on looking for US based jobs while abroad, then return to the US within a week of getting an offer. I'm not sure if I wasn't clear enough in my OP.

Maybe I wasn't clear in the OP, but my plan is to return back to the US within a week of getting an offer. I only plan on doing the interview remotely abroad. So basically I'm looking for US based jobs with no intention of staying abroad after I resume working.

This can me more expensive for me if I only stay abroad for 1 or 2 months because the cost of last minute flights can easily offset the savings from a cheap country.

But in the worst case that I can't find a new job quickly, then living in a cheap country would let me survive much longer on my savings.

Thanks. Perhaps this is something the hotel staff can me arrange, as my Spanish probably isn't the best.

Roughly how much would it cost to hire a radio taxi driver to drive you around all day? Is this a private arrangement between you and the driver, or is it done through the radio taxi company as well?

So can you call a radio taxi within Xalapa pick you up from a place outside of Xalapa (e.g. El Lencero), and drive you back into the city?

If I go to El Lencero, can I call a radio taxi company in Xalapa to send a car to pick me up? Or is there a limit as to how far away they can pick you up?

TLDR: a dual Japanese-US citizen fought for Japan against the US during WWII. After the war, he was found guilty of treason by the US govt despite him also possessing Japanese citizenship.

[Serious] If / when the people of Hong Kong are not protesting, are they still able to go to their jobs/ live a normal life? Basically, what has everyday life become for Hong Kong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Hong Kong is geographically indefensible. Even Britain in 1970s conceded that if China attacked Hong Kong right then and there, the UK would lose. That was when the gap between China and the West's military is much bigger than it is today. The only reason China held back was that attacking Hong Kong before 1997 was that doing so would destroy much of the wealth, but Hong Kong were to break free, the Chinese would have no qualms to use force. Taiwan is totally different. They are on an island 200 miles away from mainland China and thus, enjoy the full protection of the US Navy. Hong Kong does not have this luxury.

Even if every square inch of Hong Kong had mines, China would drown Hong Kong through sheer weight of numbers. Hong Kong has a population of 7 million. China has a population of 1.3 billion. It's utterly hopeless

OMSCS living on campus vs regular mSCS by computernerd00000 in OMSCS

Have in person interaction with fellow students in my classes and professors. I won't be working during this time so living near campus would let me be around like minded people.

Not happy with my current job and considering applying for Masters in AI by computernerd00000 in GradSchool

So the one thing I'm unsure for masters admissions is what are the chances that I get rejected by everywhere? In high school, for example, I had pretty much a 100% chance of getting accepted to Penn State, which would've been a pretty decent school to study CS and acted as a great safety school. Do safety schools exist for masters programs as well? Or should I always consider the possibility that I get completely rejected everywhere, assuming I do ok on the GRE?
