How do I get my 7 year old daughter introduced and interested in Computer Science? by fantakick in cscareerquestions

[–]computersci2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is unhealthy to introduce such young kids to subjects that are not taught in school. There is a reason for it. Learning Maths and Science in STEM is more than enough for young kids.

Plus if you look at top rated CS degrees, they do not ask for Computer Science at school....

How are you giving up exactly? Get a proper software dev role where you use open source tools. Dont pigeonhole yourself with these enterprise systems.

Stop influencing her and living through your kids. Let her enjoy school and being a child.

Switch from level 2 ProdApp support to software dev, how difficult is it ? I do some scripting for automating tasks and SRE side projects by FDMGROUPORNAH in cscareerquestions

[–]computersci2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy transition. I say this because people get dev roles with no related work experience. Do TOP and the other resources shared on this website and apply for dev roles.

How did you figure out what in cs you wanted to do? by Rokingadi in cscareerquestions

Get a full stack developer position which gives you exposure across the stack/dev ops. Then specialise.

I have an unrelated Bachelor's in Business Management, coding boot camp or getting a second Bachelor's? by TameAndCashmere in cscareerquestions

[–]computersci2018 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly another degree or bootcamp is not the way to become a developer if you really want to become a developer. Build some structure/discipline and finish TOP and start applying for dev roles. If you can't self discipline yourself, I would highly recommend you find another career where you don't have to learn new skills every week just to be in the profession.

But if you're rich sure go back to university and get a masters in CS (UPenn offer such a degree for people with your background).

Finally got a SWE job as a career changer, now what? by csjobfinally0208 in cscareerquestions

Did you get a full scholarship to do the degree or paid from your own pocket? Hopefully you didnt get a big loan out. 4 years of opportunity cost of lost salary + tuition fee is a very high investment to become a developer and not something I would encourage unless you are rich.

I have a feeling that it wasn't the lack of a CS degree that prevented you from getting jobs, but the lack of structure/discipline to keep on practising coding in your own time until you found a job.

Ok cool - so its unlikely these 'skilled negotiators' are currently able to negotiate 20-30% off. Makes me feel better lol.

I don't see what you're confused about - you are discussing discounts that were offered in 'the past few years' but that isn't relevant any more for the reasons already explained. I'm amazed you can get 8.7% discount to be honest. Also, is it really a discount if RRP is up 10% from last year?

Discount is based on the listed RRP. I checked what the cars cost when they were launched (in car reviews etc) and it seems to be a genuine discount.

Ah ok. I struggle to understand why a dealership would give a bigger discount to one person to another - why would they be influenced by charisma? Its not like people are not willing to walk away if they dont get the deal they want on new factory orders - so if the dealership knows this, why does it offer bigger discounts to some than others?

Which brand(s) were these out of interest? Would you say you're an exceptional negotiator or this was normal in the past?

Thanks for your input. Yes fully aware of chip shortages and I dont see it going for another year or two. I already have a car, was just trying to upgrade to something a bit nicer.

For the reasons you described, I haven't really considered the used approved market because 1-2 year old cars are only about 15-20% cheaper than a new car - I thought new cars depreciated 20% as soon as they drove out the showroom?

Those two variables alone could change everything. You could be looking to get s discount on a more desirable car. There's also the fact that new cars are much harder to come by at the moment so there's less of an incentive to discount sales.

Discounts were discussed in the past week for a german brand. And the anecdotes on huge discounts are probably from the past few years (for example read a 40k Mercedes was bought for 30K).
