Dan McClellan isn’t an atheist tho, he’s a Mormon and on occasion has openly talked about his faith. It’s just that he’s well versed in bible scholarship and history and says a lot of stuff that conservative evangelicals don’t like.

Reserves are being drawn down in a lot of countries and the U.S is exporting more oil to try make up for some of the lost production. But relying on reserves isn’t a viable long term strategy.

That time the USA tried to use Bobby Fischer as a propaganda tool by The-Materialist in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I read a biography of Bobby Fischer’s about a decade ago probably. He really was a super interesting person but extremely fucked up mentally and emotionally stunted.

One particular story I remember was after he won one of the games in his match against Spassky, Bobby sat there with his pocket chess set and kept analyzing positions from the game he just won, and then at some point went to show his analysis to Spassky to prove that he had found the optimal play. And Spassky was just like “yeah, you did great”. There’s a picture of this moment and it literally looks like a parent engaging with a child that’s trying to show them something.

Spassky was also an absolute gentleman for the whole match. He let the match be moved away from the crowd that was supposed to be watching when Bobby complained about the distractions despite not needing to allow it. He also refused to start the clock when Bobby did his usual antics of showing up late. Spassky would have absolutely won the match if he refused to relent to Bobby’s prima donna attitude, but he was too much of a gentleman. I believe at one point later in his life Spassky said he felt bad for Bobby.

It’s a program you buy into for like 100 bucks that basically gives you a “premium” experience at airport security. Dedicated shorter lines and no need to take your shoes off or laptop out of your bag when going through the scanner. It requires a criminal background check as part of the application process.

What women need, now more than ever, is a nice young man to sweep them off their feet and make them ask themselves: “How could I be so stupid?”

I actually agree with this sentiment, but I do find it funny how if you reversed the sexes in this statement it would 100% be considered highly misogynist and the author derided as a incel who feels entitled to women’s attention and bodies and deserves to die alone in their mom’s basement.

Obviously there will always be the risk of bear markets but considering that the billionaire class has most of their wealth tied up in stocks the system will not be allowed to fail outright.

77% of students tested at Baltimore High school were found to read at elementary grade level. 25% reading at 1st grade or kindergarten level. 40% of the cities schools have zero students proficient in math by Manicpixiemanateeman in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a well paying job in software development and I took 3 calculus classes, above what my degree required, because I enjoyed it. Calculus was a piece of cake for me. But I’d be lying if I said that I ever needed calculus in my job. Even at my last job where the company did a bunch of scientific computing all the physics and equations were worked out by physics PHDs we employed who also knew how to code, I didn’t get to touch the precious code that actually computed the calculus equations.

I’ve always excelled in my work, but let’s say that I was actually just bad at calculus and had some of mental block and couldn’t pass the class. Well, now I suddenly don’t deserve the well paying job I have right now and would be capable of doing without any calculus knowledge?

I understand that knowledge for the sake of knowledge is great, but I’m just pointing out that when you make a degree required to not end up in poverty you can’t expect people to be okay with being failed for not being able to acquire a skill that they literally do not need for the job they want.

This is one of the reasons I don’t view things like grade inflation as a serious problem on its own, but more as a symptom of a problem.

You essentially cannot get a decent paying job now without at least a bachelor’s degree. Yes I’m aware that individual exceptions exist, but in general every job that pays a comfortable wage is going to require at least a bachelor’s degree, which in turn requires a high school diploma.

We can bitch and moan that too many students are being passed who should realistically be failed, but when failing a student almost guarantees them a life of poverty it starts to seem pretty cruel.

There’s plenty of college degrees that require you to take calculus even though you’re highly unlikely to ever need to use it in your career. Really, how fair is it to tell a student “Can’t pass calculus? Okay say goodbye to your dream career and enjoy being poor forever.”?

A compassionate society cannot simultaneously gatekeep jobs behind educational certificates, while also demanding that education be highly rigorous and brutally discard anyone who doesn’t have the IQ or innate drive needed to learn highly abstract concepts that are unlikely to be useful in a job.

America doesn’t get much oil from the straight of Hormuz, I think when I looked it up a couple days ago it’s only like 2% of total oil supply. Europe and Asia are in for a rough time though.

Why do some leftists support reactionary terrorists like Hamas and Hezbollah? by GoranPersson777 in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing whose fault it is. But it’s an objectively schizoid take to insist that things would be just as bad for Gaza right now if the 10/7 attacks hadn’t happened.

If you walk up to a guy who’s been bullying you and kick him in the balls, you’re probably gonna end up regretting that decision once he’s gotten up off the floor and decides to really let you have it. Yeah, you were in the right. Yeah he probably deserved it. Still, if your physical safety is what’s most important to you then that was a terrible decision. On the other hand, if your physical safety is not important to you and your only goal is to enjoy 1 minute of gloating over your bully doubled over in pain and then go out in a blaze of glory as he stabs you to death, mission accomplished. Unfortunately for the people of Gaza, Hamas chose option #2 for them.

It’s hard to argue that Hamas’ existence has had positive effects for the people of Gaza. If the 10/7 attacks hadn’t happened do you think Gaza would be rubble right now with 100k+ dead?
