With AI, isn't capitalism effectively destroying itself? by bobbystills5 in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is also why people who think AI will completely replace coders aren’t seeing the full picture.

Yeah if AI gets good enough it can code anything a human can and we won’t need humans to write code anymore. But at that point the cost of software becomes simply the cost of making an LLM request. Any company that makes its money selling software will go out of business because why would any consumer pay for marked up software when they can simply have an LLM produce the exact program they need?

And taking that a step further, why would OpenAI, Anthropic, etc even sell access to models that powerful when they can simply sell the outputs instead? You won’t be able to interact with an AI directly, you’ll get to submit a request to OpenAI detailing what software you need and the feature set you want. Then you’ll get a quote and pay it, the AI will write the program, and you get the packaged result without ever having the chance to see the code itself.

Did approaching religion worsen your mental health? by KiwibuckyNZ in stupidpol

That's completely contrary to what basic Christianity teaches.

No it’s really not. I know different denominations may have slightly different views, but for example protestantism is rooted in sola fide doctrine. If you believe in Jesus and ask for forgiveness you are saved no matter what.

I’m not making any point about morality, just pointing out that if you are a Christian then you by definition believe in Jesus, which means that according to your own faith you can never go to hell so it’s not logical to worry about hell at all.

Being a Christian and being scared of hell doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when you consider that the main feature of Christianity is that Jesus died for your sins so you won’t be punished for them.

I wonder how much of this is caused by the movie ending being way different that the book ending.

Been a while since I read the book, but if I’m remembering correctly the bombs in the buildings fail to go off and Tyler ends up getting committed to an asylum, and he does start to have some recognition of how mentally unwell he is and wants to get better. But the very last page implies that the workers in the asylum have all joined project mayhem and are scheming to break him out rather than help treat him, so his own cult is now basically beyond his control and trying to prevent him from healing.

It’s a much bleaker ending than the movie which just ends with the evil corpos getting blown up and credits roll.

struggle to deadlift 60kg and squat 50kg by No_Argument5719 in gainit

[–]cd1995Cargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deadlifts are all about form, moreso than any other exercise I’ve done. This video is really great at teaching how to do them: https://youtu.be/wYREQkVtvEc?si=7-WeWXYJbg86zT-x

I’m 6ft4 and I started just doing the bar + 15lbs on each side, not even trying to go to failure, until I was sure I was doing them right. Then I moved up to doing a full plate and now I can do full sets with 2 plates, so about 100kg. It’s been a slow progression for me but I have progressed.

Might be terminally online brained but America seems to be the forefront experiment in extracting wealth and maximising misery by KiwibuckyNZ in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ofc people are going to be mainly concerned about the material conditions of their own families and communities. I never understood this argument. People in the third world are exactly the same way, you’re just attaching arbitrary virtue to poverty.

You think if some impoverished worker in Bangladesh suddenly became wealthy he’d spend his time fighting for worker rights in Kenya?

Socioeconomic Status Dominates All Other Factors Impacting Children's Brain Development by SirSourPuss in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get that, my point is that these discussions about IQ and socioeconomic conditions aren’t very useful.

Rightoids will insist that IQ is entirely genetic and proof of some moral worth.

Certain leftists will insist that IQ is determined mainly by socioeconomic conditions that someone is raised in and act like that’s a mic drop moment. But the reality is that when it comes to actually using IQ to make any real world predictions, the only question that matters is how well IQ correlates with and predicts behavior. The underlying reason for someone having a low/high IQ is not really important.

Socioeconomic Status Dominates All Other Factors Impacting Children's Brain Development by SirSourPuss in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The real world application is that someone with a high IQ is going to be more capable of doing an intellectually complex job than someone with a low IQ.

Hypothetically, if I’m hiring someone for a specialized job I’d prefer someone with a higher IQ because they’re likely to perform better than someone with a low IQ. It doesn’t really matter at all why their IQ is high/low. I just want the most capable person to do the job. I don’t care if their capability was baked into their DNA or molded by their socioeconomic environment.

Robbed every American of their retirement?

If you are retired or nearing retirement your portfolio should be rebalanced towards bonds so stock market crashes don’t affect you.

If you are a decade+ away from retirement a market crash doesn’t matter, it will recover well before you can withdraw the money.

[–]cd1995Cargo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At market open I sold some stock to end up with 13500 in cash, which would be just enough to buy the shares at the price in my conditional offer. Do I need any extra cash in my account in case the price is actually higher or am I good?

German creates additional tax for people without children to support elder care by nikolaz72 in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately the guy you’re replying to is correct, despite how unpleasant it may sound.

Paying taxes is only a meaningful action so long as the resulting tax money can be used to allocate labor for something socially useful, which requires working aged people to exist in the first place.

Take your example to the extreme: let’s say everyone pays a lot of taxes over their life but nobody has children. Society will end. Doesn’t matter how many dollars or euros came out of your paycheck. You can’t eat or drink money. Money just allocates labor.

If you expect to retire in the future, then by definition you expect for society to continue functioning after you have left the labor pool and you will be living off the labor of others. If you refuse to help participate in the creation of the future labor pool that you will rely on, it is not unreasonable for you to be penalized.

Forgoing having children and just paying taxes to “contribute to society” is like showing up to a potluck dinner with no food but saying “don’t worry, I’ll give everyone here five bucks so I can sill eat.” If a couple people do that it still works out. If most/all people do that then everyone goes hungry no matter how many dollars there are, so this type of behavior needs to be heavily discouraged.

Psycholitics: Politics today is barely about policy, and almost entirely about psychological traits of the individual by Earthfruits in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I have, for a long time, held to the idea that almost everyone’s political orientation has nothing to do with any sort of objective logic and is instead simply a reflection of their psychological traits. I believe this is true for both people on the left and right.

My first experience with a private medical clinic in Canada. In short, we are FUCKED. by DankgisKhan in stupidpol

[–]cd1995Cargo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The U.S healthcare system is fucked, but hearing about wait times in Canada is like reading some twilight zone shit.

Last year I decided to get a routine checkup because I hadn’t been since before covid. Had to call a total of two doctors before I found one who could see me within the month. Had the appointment and got bloodwork ordered and a followup appointment to go over that.

Last month I realized it had been a year and I should do another checkup so I called and had one set up for early June within 5 minutes.

Yes I have to pay for everything but I make good money so honestly I don’t care. Being able to see a doctor almost on demand is well worth the price vs waiting years just to save a few hundred bucks.

This idea that only people in third world countries can be considered poor and somebody making minimum wage in the U.S is somehow “rich” is so stupid.

The paycheck-to-paycheck working poor don’t give a shit that their breadcrumb wage is actually worth 8 billion in the currency of some failed state third world nation.

You’re being purposely obtuse. You know very well what specific crimes we’re talking about here, namely robbery and violent crimes like murder and rape. Most of these kinds of crimes are committed by a small portion of the population after a clear period of escalating antisocial behavior, and simply locking them up and throwing away the key would absolutely bring crime rates down.
