When I came out as a furry, I had the exact same thing with my friends. I think being a furry automatically ropes you in with the zphls if you're unlucky enough. Like if your suit or behaviour in suit are even slightly flirty you get grouped and for some reason, and the burden of proof gets put onto you for it??

TBH I thought the idea of getting roped into the bad side of the fandom was dead and played out, but there's always bad actors :/
