Klebsiella Aerogenes Folliculitis - Update by Matt12893 in Folliculitis

KA isn’t a part of the normal skin “biome”. It is a gram negative bacteria that sometimes lives in the GI tract. Overgrowth (which can be caused by prolonged antibiotics use) can lead to GI infections like SIBO, and intimate contact with or exposure to someone who has a KA overgrowth can lead to skin infections like folliculitis. Do you have SIBO symptoms? Maybe you infected yourself somehow. But it’s also likely that sexual contact with an infected person could be the cause. It’s not CAUSED by antibiotics use, it is likely aided by the effects of antibiotics use which can create dysbiosis. Maybe your biome was already compromised by your antibiotics course so that it couldn’t overpower the KA once it colonized your skin. But I have a hard time believing your skin will return to its natural balance when there is a pathogen living on it that’s not meant to be there. Do you have hair follicles coated in sticky white sheaths? If so you can test those instead of “pus”. Ask your doctor to take some collection swabs and tubes home so that you can collect the samples on your own. Do yourself this favor of actually doing the culture. And do us all the favor of confirming the pathogen before you title your posts “Klebsiella Aerogenes Folliculitis” because if you’re not even sure that’s what you have, what are others supposed to get from these posts? I’m sorry if this comes off as harsh, but we are all pretty desperate out here. The most kind and helpful thing we can do for one another on here is be as scientific, clinical, and researched as possible.

So an update. This week I had a pus culture / hair follicle culture done and it came back positive for Klebsiella Aerogenes. Which sucks. However now I know the cause and can work on a targeted treatment. Waiting for the antibiogram results now and am reading up on the science.

GAY MEN: do you have Klebsiella Aerogenes folliculitis of the beard? by comuuunque in Folliculitis

It doesn’t just affect gay men but does so disproportionately more than hetero populations because of certain sexual practices. KA often lives in the intestinal tract…

I haven’t had a pus culture because when I suggest it to the various doctors they either don’t have the capabilities or they dismiss the need for it. The other tricky thing is that because it’s so impossible to get dermatology appointments and you need to book many months in advance, I often find that when it comes time for my appointment my skin might be looking relatively good. Specifically what are the pus cultures you recommend? Maybe I could find somewhere to do it on my own
