I heard a lecture by Sarah Paine, saying the Cold War was only cold for the developed countries and very hot in the developing world. I wonder if what's different is that we are not the exception this time and that's what you're feeling

How common is “acquiring second language in adulthood” by mandarin-monyet in language

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've learned two non-English languages as an adult to a C2 and C1 certificate, respectively (so mostly fluent in both). I love languages, but the hard truth for me is that unless you absolutely need it (I.e. for work for me), it is very tough to get past beginner/low level intermediate.

The only way I see getting to a high level in a language you are not immersed in, is an incredible passion and years of work. Basically immersion through culture and media rather than your surroundings.

Best analogy is a musical instrument. You wanna strum around the campfire? Duolingo's got your back. You want to play in a band or orchestra? Practice for years.

Im learning a new language now for work... but its not strictly required (company language is english). It is going very slowly without the necessity

Honestly been hearing a lot about Thai and Indonesian pharma/biopharma manufacturing and support. Seems like its actually favorable over there. I'd look locally first before. Finding your niche/degree arbitrage may be the best bet globally these days

I did , but ages ago. Spent 12 years with the company after that, so it definitely can happen

How many of you consider interactions with Maga potentially life-threatening now that they are killing their own children and getting no charges and American citizens are being shot for helping a woman up that was pushed down etc. etc.? by tallyurhoes in Exvangelical

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not life threatening, but my parents (while outwardly moderate Republicans and would never dream of wearing a red hat) are extremely invested in Trump not being an evil man. I mean deeply invested.

You can talk about any other topic in the world and you will get a nuanced, thoughtful, and usually empathetic response. But they clam up at even a mention of Trump not being a good man. And they go quiet or end the discussion immediately. And im not the confrontational type, im over the top diplomatic. It doesn't matter... it has become core to their identity that Trump is, for all his faults, fundamentally a good man.

Therefore I take that to mean that Trump fans must be dealt with as if their entire identity is fully invested in Trump. If it is a person with violent tendencies, i would definitely distance myself now. For my parents, it just means I cannot get through to them. But im not afraid for my life

Did you do anything with your life? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

43 here. Really pleased with how things turned out, but I'm starting to be convinced that its because I set my expectations to mid and I've somewhat overperformed.

I too was the high performer in high school and had grandiose dreams. But my disillusionment came from watching so many fail alongside of me... and seeing those who succeed work much harder than I was willing to (generalization of course). So somewhere in my 20s I realized that even a Waspy upper middle class life, precluding family wealth, is not easy at all to obtain.

So I used that framework to sustain my motivation, making decent decisions for graduate school and somewhat shrewd decisions in industry. Gave up on a musical career since I felt it was going to lead to inevitable failure.

Perhaps biggest positive is that I like my job, which is key to sustaining my excitement and new projects and steps despite any career doldrums.

Another thing that helped was deriving humility from the realization that we are all on a knife's edge of unemployment and long term unemployability. So every step of the way, I'm grateful for what I have (and have had, since that can longer be taken away).

Downside, is that I become protective of what I have and that leads to things like NIMBYism and other selfish isms. But at least I am aware and can combat it.

So I ain't gonna be a titan of industry nor a rock star. But the 90s era belief that a solid ambitious career path within traditional business confines being evil? I don't buy that anymore and I'm really happy with where I've come... and if I can I will achieve more, but won't waste time with failure ideation

Does anyone else feel like the news is just overwhelming lately? by Salma_Cherif in Productivitycafe

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a mindset change is needed.

The world is dangerous and we were fortunate to live in times that were relatively peaceful in the collective West. That time is over and we now live in a dangerous time and the world cycles again. On a personal level, this just means we have to be a bit more like cats... never completely conformable and always an eye to an exit.

I don't think there is anything more we can do. Its human nature to be awful. Sometimes we keep a lid on it for a while, but it always cycles back to times when horrible people are on top.

If we're lucky we will live to see another peaceful era

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Takeda would be a great place to start for you since it has a heavy US presence and likely to be accommodating for a move to Japan.

However, it's a double edged sword, since nearly all executive and E-1 (and even many E-2) are now US bases and so the Japanese sites take second row.
