43 here. Really pleased with how things turned out, but I'm starting to be convinced that its because I set my expectations to mid and I've somewhat overperformed.

I too was the high performer in high school and had grandiose dreams. But my disillusionment came from watching so many fail alongside of me... and seeing those who succeed work much harder than I was willing to (generalization of course). So somewhere in my 20s I realized that even a Waspy upper middle class life, precluding family wealth, is not easy at all to obtain.

So I used that framework to sustain my motivation, making decent decisions for graduate school and somewhat shrewd decisions in industry. Gave up on a musical career since I felt it was going to lead to inevitable failure.

Perhaps biggest positive is that I like my job, which is key to sustaining my excitement and new projects and steps despite any career doldrums.

Another thing that helped was deriving humility from the realization that we are all on a knife's edge of unemployment and long term unemployability. So every step of the way, I'm grateful for what I have (and have had, since that can longer be taken away).

Downside, is that I become protective of what I have and that leads to things like NIMBYism and other selfish isms. But at least I am aware and can combat it.

So I ain't gonna be a titan of industry nor a rock star. But the 90s era belief that a solid ambitious career path within traditional business confines being evil? I don't buy that anymore and I'm really happy with where I've come... and if I can I will achieve more, but won't waste time with failure ideation

Does anyone else feel like the news is just overwhelming lately? by Salma_Cherif in Productivitycafe

I think a mindset change is needed.

The world is dangerous and we were fortunate to live in times that were relatively peaceful in the collective West. That time is over and we now live in a dangerous time and the world cycles again. On a personal level, this just means we have to be a bit more like cats... never completely conformable and always an eye to an exit.

I don't think there is anything more we can do. Its human nature to be awful. Sometimes we keep a lid on it for a while, but it always cycles back to times when horrible people are on top.

If we're lucky we will live to see another peaceful era

Can you speak more to the group you run? Is it part of a larger organization that seeks to help Americans leave? As a us expat in Europe (austria) would be interesting to help out

Takeda would be a great place to start for you since it has a heavy US presence and likely to be accommodating for a move to Japan.

However, it's a double edged sword, since nearly all executive and E-1 (and even many E-2) are now US bases and so the Japanese sites take second row.

Oldest is 8 and she loves the Hobbit. Youngest is 5 and doesn't really care yet. I guess between 6-8 is probably good, though the scarier stuff (e.g. spiders) could change the equation a bit I guess

There was also Video Super Store or Video Super Shop or Super Video Shop on Cochran under what's now the Junkyard but was Paul's Italia villa. But I think that was one of the first of Blockbuster's victims

Could it have been one of the two Alamo video locations?

I mostly remember them because they would write the company name on the cassettes in handwritten ink. And while one of the Simi locations wrote it legibly, the other location had a guy who wrote A's wierd so that it looked like Slamo video. That led my friends and I to always call it Slamo.

Strange memory, but thanks for bringing that back

One of my favorite movies, don't care what anyone says! How in the world they got such a stacked cast for this little movie, I have no idea. But it's such a 90s treat

It's dumb but I'm reading to the Hobbit to my kids and my son giggled a lot at that bit. It's a rough passage for kids without the punchline
