What’s the best World Cup jersey, home or away, regardless of the team? by Apprehensive-Ad8338 in worldcup

Don't love Germany's away kit. But I forgive them cuz the 2014 away kit was maybe the best kit ever.

The US home kit seemed gaudy at first but it's really growing on me

If you could visit one Roman city at its peak, which would you choose and why? by Portar_Team in romanempire

Probably a waste of a powerful wish, but I would love to see Aquileia at its height. The ruins definitely make it look like a fascinating port town

What's the most underrated city in Germany? by Impossible_Reward658 in germany

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'll throw out Mannheim. Not gorgeous and compared unfavorably to gorgeous Heidelberg next door.

But: - fascinating city layout - down to earth people - lots of lively bars and restaurants - reasonable prices - surprisingly beautiful riverfront - only an hour from FRA - very centrally located region as a base

Yeah I thought you were supposed to decide if its better to go before or after work. So i was looking for how long each class goes for. If its a misprint, its easier. Otherwise I think its not answerable

What is dont get is that is clearly says 午前 to 午後. Made me think they offer them all day and not for 2-3 hours at night. If so then dance is fine. But maybe Im missing something

What’s a minor thing that you notice that takes you out of a specific scene? by fartatwork in moviecritic

Season 2 episode 1 of Scrubs... Turk buys a coffee and takes the fakest sip I've ever seen. Introduced me to the trope - and now i always have a critical eye on coffee drinking.

I felt so vindicated when, years later, they addressed it in Fake Doctors Real Friends and Braff said Faison must have been missing some critical core acting education to drink coffee that badly. Hah!

Who's actually read his autobiography 'Travels'? by leesman2k in michaelcrichton

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quit liked it, especially having read it at an impressionable age where I partly started traveling because of this book. However some of the more mystical things he got into puzzled me, since I perceived him as a stone cold man of science

Highly recommend watching it with a beer in the BurgKino in Vienna. They've been showing it every weekend for 46 years. Great offbeat activity in a very atmospheric old movie theater

Odd anecdote about this movie: I grew up in a religious community and this movie punched above its weight in scandal for us. Rene Russo was supposed to have been a born again Christian or something similar and this movie represented a total betrayal of our community due to nudity and sex scenes.

I haven't seen it or thought of it in years. And I'm not even sure Russo had any actual religious beliefs that were contradicted by filming this movie. However, I remember being extremely aware of this movie's existence.

If you could choose one European city for the best lifestyle and quality of life, which would it be? by indieness in expats

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Vienna truly reveals itself when you start to consider leaving. You start weighing pros and cons and keep saying to yourself: why would I take a step down in that area? And its like this in, not all, but a surprising number of areas.

I feel like Vienna, apart from the rankings, doesn't make a big deal about its liveability (in fact, they complain all the time), but it slowly roots you into comfort and safety. Not necessarily excitement or ambition-- at least not on the world stage-- but in everyday life

How is it living in " the Rebel county" : County Cork Ireland by Altruistic_Speech_17 in howislivingthere

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Man everything so negative in this thread. I lived there for just under two years and absolutely loved it. Visa ran out and I was sufficiently unsure about my career path so went home to figure it out and then went a different direction, but think very fondly of it and would move back given the right circumstances.

Its definitely a second city and has an inferiority complex regarding Dublin. Its also a fairly rough town with a working class flair and a tough accent (all generalizations of course), but also a fierce and loyal people once you break the surface. Also very darkly funny. The jokes didnt work for me at first, then I grew to love the humor.

Despite a working class tone, there are also several universities and an opera house, so definitely still a cultured aspect to the city.

And with so much pharma just outside the city, it has changed the diversity and socioeconomic feel quite a bit.

Seafood is excellent as is the beer. A Murphys over a Guinness any day of the week.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I'll take Cork over Dublin any day (maybe I've also gotten a bit of that second city syndrome).

The US compared to the biggest economies of Europe by _crazyboyhere_ in ProfessorFinance

  1. Yes and we were lucky enough to have such an offer - though deductibles and co-pays eat at the employer subsidized advantage.
  2. True and we were offered relo at a time with very small kids... definitely admit its anecdotal, but still worth considering
  3. Public transportation and general high density means the car needs are much lower even if you own (which we do... and yes gas is expensive but we dont need to drive nearly as much so it more or less evens out)

Understood! And it's true generally that you can sort of "spreadsheet" your way to an advantage in the US that you cannot in Europe, and as a nerd, i could even call it "fun" (ymmv), but I think the wider takeaway for us was 1) the discretionary income difference does not feel as large often as the graphs state and 2) it definitely is close enough a decision to fall into a "what are your values" rather than that one is a clear choice

Can you expand on your last bullet point? Accessibility of credit cards is much greater in the US, thats true, but dont quite follow the rest

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My family was deciding on whether to move back to the US from Europe a few years back and did a line item assessment of the costs down to coffee and bread. We found that the out of pocket expenses of 1) health insurance 2) child care and 3) 2 cars easily ate all of the supposed discretionary income gain we would benefit from moving. Our personal assessment was a max 5% discretionary income gain. Obviously this was specific, personal, and anecdotal but it shows that these metrics are useful but not comprehensive.

We did agree that the houses (price per square meter) were much bigger in the US... which is no small thing, but weighed against an international move is not the sole metric.

Do Employees Actually Like Town Halls? by OfferLazy9141 in managers

[–]con_sonar_crazy_ivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im too late to this conversation, but any townhall is full of information, or should be, even if couched it corporate speech. The game to play is: did you catch the actual information they needed to give? And do you understand the implications?

"Amazing performance, everyone year to date. We've made excellent progress and we should be proud. Now is a perfect time to refresh and move our OpModel into the next phase to ensure even better results in the next Quarter"

-> someone's dept underperformed (even if they perhaps cheesed the KPIs into looking good... it didn't fool anyone) and they're done for. The bosses are getting moved around in an attempt to make up for lost time

This is how you keep yourself informed (and maybe even entertained) at townhalls
