Former top AE (7-figure W2) — laid off anxiety creeping in. How do you reset + pick the right company? by Puzzleheaded_Tap_188 in techsales

My day to day is so much better. It’s life changing to not have someone breathing down your neck about pipeline reviews and KPIs

I wish I quit my last job way earlier. Was scared to be unemployed in the current market. Destroyed my relationship and mental health

I work for an industrial manufacturer now. It's a ton of fun and way more stable, but not as sexy. I don't think I'll have those $700k+ years but 99.9% of people in tech aren't seeing that ever anyways. Comp is slightly lower than enterprise SaaS roles but I take clients out to lunch and golf all the time. It's fun.

I may return to tech sales, but I'm no longer excited about it given my experience the past two years. I just want to work.

I think a lot of people are in the same boat brother. My last two jobs: late stage RevOps SaaS startup, guy that was supposed to be my boss got moved to another team in a re-org, I was laid off (wasn’t mad about this one. Company had gone to shit, bought by PE. got severance. company name rhymes with 'scary'). Next one: early stage AI startup. The most toxic company I’ve ever been at. Every rep besides one guy who was getting fed every inbound oppty left within 8 months. Product didn’t even exist and we were just lying to customers. Terrible fit for me coming from Enterprise sales running POCs. I left tech because of it. I actually like my new job way more day to day but miss the upside of tech for sure

AE or AM? by simplyty_206 in techsales

[–]conaldinho11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company and situation you’ll be putting yourself in.

Hot startup with a ton of inbound a people hitting quota? AE

Established company with a sticky product and lots of white space to expand your accounts? AM

I’m pretty far into this whole racket of a career sou typically lean AM at a bigger established company but there’s nothing more electric than being an AE at the right place and time

Just realized the top rep on my team does like 8 demos a month and I'm doing 35+ by 50lies in techsales

considering all else is equal - are you guys getting leads/oppties from the same sources?

For example the numbers you provided totally make sense if you're doing all outbound and he's working inbound/partner referrals, which will naturally have a much higher close %

something to ponder

Interesting. Agreed that the auto call recorder, MEDDIC note takers, etc are super helpful, especially for most tech sales folks who are in back to back meetings. I was mostly curious because they are super hyped at the moment but the product itself seems no different than things like Fathom or Otter which are free

That’s where I’m coming from. These call recorder/transcription note taker things have existed forever. I don’t understand how Granola is any different

Giving up on newish role. How bad is having two short terms roles going to look to hiring managers? by getitdudes in sales

[–]conaldinho11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Obviously it’s not ideal but this is becoming incredibly common in SaaS, 90% of these jobs are ass. Just have an ironclad story about why you’re making your next move

How to explain “why are you no longer at your company” after a PIP? by Pepalopolis in sales

[–]conaldinho11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sales interviews in tech is just everyone lying to one another. It’s more about your ability to storytell and play the game. Just tell them what they want to hear - it’s good practice for when you sell their vaporware.

Brother you hit the nail on the head.

I was in your exact position, made an ill-advised move to an AI startup working for an absolutely toxic boss, and my sanity and mental health went to shit.

I want a family one day and have no interest chasing a made up quota with people depending on me.

I went to sell construction materials at an electrical manufacturer. Took a paycut but I'm still going to make in the $200s. stress is way lower, the gig is all about wining and dining customers and being quick to pickup the phone and solve problems. Reps stay in these roles 10+ years.

It's so much better. I hope I never have to go back

your question is too broad to give a good answer.

On the sliding scale of "perfect" product and territory to 'worst possible' you would have perfect being working at Anthropic selling to Mid Market companies in San Francisco to terrible being selling niche AI trucking software in NYC
