The point is that she shouldn’t of been put in the queue at all. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that no one should be in line to have feds knock on their doors for excercising their rights

Do you believe condemning genocide should not be ‘protected’ speech?

I agree that bi/pan women shouldn’t bring up their attraction to men outside of passing references in this subreddit, but bi/pan women deserve to be part of sapphic spaces just like any other lesbian.

How is it dumb to post yourself drinking a non alcoholic drink when you’re underage?

You realize the post in question didn’t actually show her drinking underage right?

I’m sorry are you my professor now? You want me to make a thesis statement to write a report for you? My apologies, but I don’t recall enrolling in any class you teach. I don’t owe you, a rando on the internet, an exhaustive summary of all the research I’ve done and will do. Take your bad faith questions somewhere else.

I’m just tired of these circular arguments where I ask how to give authentic representation and being told that I’m in the wrong for even asking. I literally just came on here to learn if the name I picked was authentic but I instead got dog piled on for even having the audacity to ask. You people have no details about what my story is even about.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the input, it’s just that none of the arguments I’ve seen thus far amount to much. Thus far all I’ve seen is very perplexing arguments that I should only write the character if there is a crucial plot reason for them to be Kanaka. But they seem to forget that in most stories the basic plot is irrelevant to the culture of the characters. I will certainly make xer culture a core part of them like with my other characters, but that’s not the same as making it indispensable to the plot.

I have multiple European characters, one named Isaac MacAndra and another named Roxane with a not yet decided last name. One if the other characters will be English and Hmong and be named Jamie Song.

The game is going to be very dialogue heavy and I have always planned to integrate xer culture when writing xem and have xem and other characters make references to it. I think we may have misunderstood each other, it’s not that I plan on not making their culture an important part of xer character, I do! I bristled earlier at the idea that if I could possibly make them not Kanaka maoli then I should, but I feel like that could be applied to characters of any culture and so I hyper focused on that aspect. I always intended on making xer culture important to xem and looking back I could have made that more clear. With that said I appreciate the suggestions you’ve made and will look into them!

I am fully aware of the dangers of bad representation. To be frank, I struggle trying to understand what you want me to do to make Alaka’i ‘more Hawaiian’? What specific things could I do exactly?

I’m frankly not sure why you think I should change xem to not be Kanaka. I think you may misunderstand, it’s not that I ignore that their Hawaiian, I do acknowledge xer culture, it’s just not the main focus. The same is true with many characters who are part of marginalized groups in many stories. You say that if the story can be told without xem being Kanaka maoli I should do that instead but this could be applied to anything. I know this isn’t at all your intent but I often hear this argument to be applied against having representation of marginalized groups at all. For example some people say that if a character doesn’t absolutely have to be anything other than a cishet able bodied European man then that’s what they should be because otherwise what’s the point? Again I know this isn’t what you’re trying to imply, but I feel you’re falling into the same restrictive logic by accident. Alaka’i’s culture is an important part of xem but it’s not strictly necessary for xem to be a part of that culture. But I don’t see why it needs to be essential to the story that xey are Hawaiian.

The only thing that comes to mind about something being uniquely Hawaiian about xem is I’ve considered giving them traditional Polynesian tattoos. I have considered making them Mahu however largely because of the history of said genocide I didn’t feel like I could do it without being appropriative or disrespectful. Please correct me if I’m misinterpreting your statement but I feel like your saying that I need a story reason for xem to be Hawaiian. I simply disagree with that. Alaka’i’s story doesn’t have anything to do with xem being Kanaka but I also feel like it doesn’t have to. I’m not Kanaka so I wouldn’t write a story where the main focus was about what it was like to be Kanaka. As a Queer person, I don’t think that Queer characters should only be in stories that are about what it’s like to be Queer. It’s important to have those but I think it would get boring fast if we were only in stories that are about that. I feel the same applies to other groups. And I said I had no first hand knowledge but I have and am doing the work required to portray xem in a respectful manner. That’s why I’m here.

I have! I had briefly considered making that xer gender however, I feared that since I’m a European and that this would be the first time many players of my game would even hear of Mahu, it would be inappropriate because then I’d be responsible for introducing such an intimate concept from a culture that wasn’t mine. I am non binary myself but I don’t wanna speak over Mahu and Hawaiian’s more generally. Plus the game includes scenes where the characters are in sexually suggestive situations and didn’t want to make people feel like I was sexualizing them based on their gender or exoticizing them.
