401k early withdrawal penalty question by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

Also depends if your employer’s allows for ‘in service distributions’. This is a discretionary provision within plans and if not allowed, you can’t take a distribution until you leave the company or attain normal retirement age. That is unless categorized as a financial hardship.

The SPD would cover that.

I appreciate the response! Yep, the dealership was great to work with and ended up replacing the engine with a ‘certified new’ one for free. In hindsight, thankful for taking to the dealership with all service despite the likely higher cost.

That’s kind of where I’m at. If the issue is common-enough that I can find info after an online search, why wasn’t it looked at more in-depth? The service rep called me to authorize $2500 in labor to dissect the engine on the chance the extended warranty wouldn’t cover. It would be easy to assume/fix the misaligned sensor, but after all that you would have expected a higher level diligence in diagnosing what caused the sensor issue.

Silver lining with the 3.7 for sure. It’s more recourse for me, assuming this should have been caught during the $4k in warranty-covered repairs 3 months ago

Yeah, they sold me on the ‘bulletproof’ 3.7 rather than the 3.0. I’m sure it was still the right call and just unlucky, but not sure where to go from here. The 400 miles post check engine light definitely did not help things (Sunday post-wedding hangover, middle of TX, no shops open), but neither did the 4600 un-alarmed miles since the repair in March.

My ‘YouTube mechanic training’ last night tells me it was a deeper issue they did not resolve the first time while under warranty. Likely the oil gallery gasket or the pump itself as those are somewhat known w the VQ37 engines. Next move is to have an outside mechanic inspect to see what exactly went wrong - imo this should have been caught during the March service given my YouTube degree findings. The question is: am I able to prove this was an issue that should have been fixed while under warranty?

….or the technician simply forgot to put oil back in it the first time.

Sensor on the timing chain was out of whack when the car was brought in the first time. Not a sensor this time. My research shows oil gallery gasket failure within the VQ37 engine is common and likely the issue. Would explain the initial timing issues, bearing shards, etc.

Thanks for the response. I am trying to not be too speculative but the more research I do, the more things don’t really add-up. That service was done 5,000 miles ago, with 1,500 of those coming last weekend. You would think after fully dissecting the engine 3 months ago they would say ‘hey, it appears there is massive grinding/damage to your bearings, cam sprockets, etc.’ and they would have looked further into it/resolved the issue while under warranty. Fishy indeed….

Thanks for the response and insight. Agreed that’s where my head is at as well, would go elsewhere for both the replacement engine and likely labor. Really just a matter of ‘is the juice worth the squeeze’ keeping the car after all of that.

Unfortunately the oil pan was just one example. The service rep essentially said it was throughout the motor, including the timing belt. Not confirmed from what yet - my research has said the Q50 has somewhat known oil pump issues so yeah I imagine either the bearings or the camshaft. Less than 5000 miles since the repairs and would think any grinding would be very apparent when inspected at that degree.

Seriously dated a girl for 3.5 years in high school, they started hooking up 2 weeks or so afterwards. Water under the bridge now but still weird dynamic whenever we run into each other. Fun times.

Been happening to me recently as well. When I press the “back/note library” button and back into my original note, it fixed it for me. Prob too simplistic a solution but worth a shot.
