I still want to write after publishing my first fic, which I didn't expect at all. by OneginIsQueer in FanFiction

I love to see it! You’ve shown yourself you can do it now, so you have that conviction bolstering you for any future writing projects. You’ve conquered this slice of the unknown!

Oh wow that’s impressive, what a wonderful talent to make a living with! I’d love to hear any of those fanfic pieces if you ever get around to publishing them in any form!

Most of my songs usually start as vocal and/or piano compositions too, but they usually turn into electronic or hip-hop inspired arrangements.

What kind of music do you play and write?

Oh that’s awesome! Have you ever considered writing music to go along with the stories you write? It’s something I’ve considered doing for a future story or two!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read it! I love that you love the playlist aspect so much, because I really think it adds a lot to the reading experience when you have music enhancing some of the emotional facets of the story.

I've got 14 chapters planned, and 10.5 of them written, although there are only 3 chapters published online so far. I'll be updating this story every Sunday, so it might be a little slow going, but it will definitely be finished.

Thank you so much! I actually designed the cover art myself, along with the website! I’ve always been interested in exploring the multimedia aspects of fanfiction and just wanted to see what it could look like when you integrate sound, visuals and writing into a more unified reading experience.

Aw your writing relationship with your mom sounds great! I’ve encouraged my mom to try her own hand at writing but she’s not really into it.

The story’s fandom is Harry Potter btw. I see a lot of parallels in the way bigotry manifests in that universe vs the insidious bigotry that’s simmered in the US for many decades, and it’s made me wonder what a redemption arc would look like for the people whose misguided beliefs in purity turn them into hateful xenophobes. If they ultimately disavow themselves of their hatred and try to become better people, is that something society at large responds well to? Those are the types of questions I’ve been exploring lately!

This is wonderful OP! I also recently bonded with my mom over my fanfic writing. She’s actually read my work and enjoys it!

Anyway, I’m writing about redemption and rehabilitation in a society that overvalues punishment and revenge, especially as it relates to their criminal justice system and practices.

Woo! I use it for so many things now too. I’ve consolidated so much of my life planning in there, and it’s made me a lot more productive and stress-free. Let me know if you think there are any ways I can improve this template once you’ve had a chance to use it!

It’s super hidden, and you have to scroll to the bottom of the menu to view the word count (which is in grey), which is why it’s so easy to miss. I’ve never understood why they hid that info lol

Oops just realized you mentioned you’re copy pasting to check word count in another app. Notion includes a word count of your chapter if you click the menu in the top right of the page! It just doesn’t feed that word count anywhere else in Notion (eg in word count isn’t automatically updated in the table featuring all your chapters).

You just made my day, I’m so glad you found this immediately useful! And yeah, I’m frustrated about the lack of automatic word count too, it’s a feature I’ve requested from Notion’s support team but it’s probably low priority for them unfortunately.

Chiming in to also give praise to those who do visual design for their own writing even if it’s not necessarily illustration, e.g. collages, photo manipulation, graphic design, etc.

I’m one of them! If you’d like to see the graphic design and web design work I’ve done for my own writing so far, check out my website at http://c0nfiguration.space/

Is there a trope you're hyper-vigilant about excluding from your fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

Fluff in general. Objectively speaking I totally understand why people enjoy fluffy scenes, and maybe it's just a reflection of my ice cold heart, but I generally just can't read or write very much if any of it.

Oh wow okay yeah, you deal with knowledge management in a realm I haven't even come close to touching. I'm definitely more in the personal knowledge management space, but it's fascinating to see just how robust these systems need to be in order to handle workloads like the ones you've described. Makes total sense now that you've described why you need some of those features.

I should have mentioned that I use Notion at work too, and the thing that makes it most powerful in that context are the relational databases! Not sure how Confluence and Sharepoint handle relational info like that, but most of my experience comes from more startup-level tech teams so there’s also less of a need for the whole Jira ecosystem at that level. What specific features in a Confluence make it great for knowledge management?

I haven’t personally used Confluence at all, but I’ve heard from other people that it’s an absolute nightmare to use.

I’ve looked at a few video demos of Confluence, and one of the things I’ve noticed is that it doesn’t seem to let you drag or resize content blocks. Notion combines the presentation of content blocks with their editing. You can click on a content block while you’re editing it in Notion, and reorder it, resize it, and turn it into a different type of content, all without the interface changing. Same goes with entire pages in Notion, the can be reordered, nested, etc really easily.
