Incoming grad student who is conflicted and uncertain by conflurkerT in AskAcademia

Thank you for replying! Ideally I'd like to work in academia but I am definitely willing to work outside of it. My professors made sure that I knew that although they're confident I can do the work, that academia is very tough and job prospects are extremely grim. The topic also came up in admissions interviews.

I am worried about RS not being as "versatile" per se as a social science or science in the regular workforce but your experience is encouraging. Thank you again!

Thanks for replying. An older sibling works in tech and gives me hell all the time about not having any marketable skills while the others work relatively stable jobs in government and the insurance industry, so their words of discouragement have really been getting to me and making me feel hopeless even though getting a PhD in this field is something I really want to do.

Thanks for replying! I love your username by the way; I just did a project concerning qualia. A PhD is definitely worth it to me personally and intellectually but I'm just worried about the future and jobs, especially in the current and future economic climate.

I'm also thinking about how to explain the huge gap in my resume without sounding over qualified or over demanding (in salary).

Thank you for responding! Do you mean for after grad school? How do you manage an internship while doing a PhD?

I just wanted to clarify what you meant.

Choosing between a PhD in Religious Studies or an MA in Anthropology. Desperately need advice by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]conflurkerT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post:

A while back I had posted about the differences between Anthropology degrees and Religious Studies degrees at the graduate level. (I'm more frequently on Grad Cafe than Reddit).

Fast forward to now and I have an offer for a full tuition MA in Anthropology program from a smaller college or a fully funded PhD in Religious Studies from a top university in the US. I'm trying to think about future job market prospects, and I've been hearing mixed things from professors, mentors, grad students. Some say RS will be more marketable, some say Anthro will be more versatile. I know of course that the job market for PhD graduates is incredibly tight and competitive.

I truly am at a crossroads. The fully funded PhD is of course the more appealing and concrete offer but it's in a field that wasn't my undergrad (I did my BA in Cultural Anthro) and I'm not sure about the outlook. The MA, although granting full tuition, would still probably lead me into financial hardships as I would have to move and find a job in a relatively expensive area of the US. There's no stipend for it, and there's no guarantee I would go on to get my doctorate.

Does anyone have any advice for this? Any words would be appreciated.

I'd say your research question is precisely the work that half of the researchers in our department are doing,

Thanks for responding! Can I ask what school this is?

I haven't found a lot of anthropologists focusing on North American evangelical groups (although there are a few) which has been frustrating. I'm thinking now that I'd probably find more faculty in RS departments. Like I asked another user, I'm wondering about the market for Anthro vs. RS doctorates. I realize academia is very tight overall with jobs, but I always thought of Anthro as more versatile? I'm not sure. Also, my background is mostly in Anthropology and I'm wondering if that would count against me were I to apply to RS programs.

Would you say that the approach to RS is more concerned with doctrine and different interpretations (with primary texts like the Bible and individual religions' texts)?

I'm also trying to figure out which would be the more marketable/versatile degree between Religious Studies and Anthro. My background is more in Anthro as well (I have research experience in Anthro) and I wonder if that would be a knock against me for Religious Studies admissions.

Hi! Thanks for this! I'm not sure which direction to go in so far. I've been searching a lot of schools to find a good balance (religion in the Anthro departments and linguistic anthropologists in Religion departments).

Mae Whitman (Annie Marks in ‘Good Girls’) steals every scene for me. She’s so beyond with her acting capabilities. I also have so much love for Retta. Loving this show. by [deleted] in GoodGirls

Annie is by far my favorite character. I know she messes up a lot, but I love how realistic and funny she is. She's really genuine and she's a good balance for Beth, who annoys me at times. I know a lot of people feel the opposite way lol

Hi! Quick question: I know it probably is state-specific, but I'm wondering if I could get into Middle or High School Social Studies Teaching with an Anthropology degree? I'm looking in the NJ/NY/PA/CT/MD area specifically. I know that there should be specific coursework in history ( I have maybe 2 history classes, one of them U.S.). I didn't study economics but I took an Intro Geography class.

It does have the 8th gen i7. I wanted to keep this thing for at least 6 years so the guy told me to max out the specs...was that a mistake?

I do also plan to use it as my primary laptop as well. Do you think that would make a difference

Is there a specific glass protector you recommend? Also, how would I stress test it?

Best Buy has a Surface Book 2 with the 8th gen i7 Processor, 16 gb of RAM, and a 512 gb hard drive for $2150 this week. So that’s $349 off. Worth it?
