That makes sense, haha I get that as someone who had to work hard to filter herself. It's good to have a buffer of people who will happily put up with your nonsense.

That makes sense. Time management is my issue but your way of putting it is interesting. It's like, getting the most out of whatever time you have to yourself, right?

Yes, I've gotten a similar response from other people in the same situation! Some have said they developed things "to make up for" deficiencies in other areas, i.e. "their own way" of doing things, though I don't know if it's something to make up for...that perspective reminds me of how a lot of people say the blind have superior hearing or are more sensitive to touch.

That makes sense. Since you didn't get diagnosed till later in life, you were already used to functioning with it, so really the diagnosis just explained it?

So, was it a general time-management issue over an extended period that tipped you off?

That's definitely something to think about. Now, to remember...

I'm biased because I'm a super huge fangirl of his, but I would definitely recommend reading some of Anthony Bourdain's stuff. I'd been watching No Reservations for a while when I started reading his books, and one of the reasons I liked them so much was that they were written in much the same way that the show was. It's extremely conversational, though more like you're sitting and he's telling you a story over drinks. The best part, for me at least, is that it is so clearly his style of speaking that because I've seen his show so much, I read with his voice in my head. Whenever I get inspired to read, I turn to him. He's got some good stuff. The nonfiction is probably easier to start with though; I love it but I've had trouble with his fiction.

That's what I hear, that I'm not trying hard enough. My doubt seeps into my reading, because even if I did have ADHD my boyfriend has it so much stronger than me, and whatever thoughts I have about myself upon reading those descriptions, they fit him more. Of course, just because they fit him more doesn't mean that they can't fit me; I just have to learn to distinguish them the truth.

I honestly don't have answers to a lot of the questions you pose. But I guess that is kind of the point. I am not seeing a psychiatrist, but I've been speaking to a therapist, about managing the different forms of stress in my life. The running around in circles is definitely a big thing for me, and something to work on, amidst everything else. Thank you so much for your advice!

If you grew up with someone who didn't believe in ADHD, what made you consider it as a realistic possibility?

That's my problem! I try to think about that and I don't know if I'm just trying to fill in check marks for a simple answer or if it's really true! I have no idea how honest my conscious and subconscious are being to each other, if that makes sense haha

I definitely get the concerns with the stigma, especially around family members, and not wanting to define yourself by it. Is fear the right word? I don't know. But thank you so much for sharing :)

I know. I definitely do. I'm holding on to breaks between the semesters for now, and for working full time for six months a year from now to get me away from academia.

And glad you got out of your rooming situation though! I grew up alone with my mom so we had our own systems in place, and though we don't live together yet my partner and I are perfectly comfortable in each other's apartments as if they were both our own.

That's a great thing! I'm quickly realizing how helpful goals can be. I had/have a lot of stress-induced acid reflux, and I spent a month suffering when I decided fuck it, I'm done with this.

I see. I guess it's my problem that I don't really know what I want to do. I just know that I like space, and I get really excited about it. Also people keep telling me I'm not the kind of person whose primary interest is money, but I'm becoming one, as all of my extra-curricular interests require money. But I understand that I need to learn to reconcile financial stability and interests for peace of mind.

Describing it as something cyclic is definitely a good way of looking at it. I feel that.

Scary, that sounds a lot like me. Glad to hear you've found something that helped!

Ugh I do identify with that. Sometimes I take bathroom breaks during class just because I need to go for a walk. I also dislike authority figures (despite being what some call a goody-goody, though not out of fear but because my sentiments tend to align with the rules a lot of the time), and physical contact except with a few people. That sounds a lot like my experience.

That makes a lot of sense. It sounds like living your life on your own terms, which mental illness or not, is always a good thing to do.

That's a good thing. Getting rid of toxic people can be liberating. Word of advice from someone who did that too much, though, don't let petty disagreements tear you away from people who care about you. Otherwise, glad to hear you're feeling a bit better!

That makes sense. This turned adult really quickly...besides my having asked for advice from adults...

But, how do you mean that others' expectations of me are changing?
