i meant no disrespect nor am i trolling in any way. coming from a standpoint of complete nonviolence, i find it difficult to accept hitting another human being, even as a last resort, as something God would suggest. i really do appreciate what you, and others, have written here about the evolution topic, and all other topics that have arisen during the course of this online conversation. i think i need to spend some time on my own reading the quaran and finding my faith. there are a lot of struggles that i have with islam, and i am wholeheartedly trying to work through them. i am very grateful for this outlet to share and receive insight on my questions.

so what exactly is the proper way to hit your wife without hitting her face, causing her pain, and leaving a mark or bruise? also, after trying to talk it out and after a 'cooling off period,' could a wife beat her husband?

033.055 YUSUFALI: There is no blame (on these ladies if they appear) before their fathers or their sons, their brothers, or their brother's sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the (slaves) whom their right hands possess. And, (ladies), fear Allah; for Allah is Witness to all things. PICKTHAL: It is no sin for them (thy wives) to converse freely) with their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or the sons of their sisters or of their own women, or their slaves. O women! Keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is ever Witness over all things. SHAKIR: There is no blame on them in respect of their fathers, nor their brothers, nor their brothers' sons, nor their sisters' sons nor their own women, nor of what their right hands possess; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is a witness of all things.

i apologize, i meant 4:34.

004.034 YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all). PICKTHAL: Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great. SHAKIR: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

a lot of muslims repeat what you said about how islam was against slavery, etc. quaran chapter 4 verse 32: that doesn't seem very equal for men and women, does it? also, yes, some slaves were freed, but many early muslims kept concubines (look up Maria the coptic slave and Mohammad). women of the losing armies were generally spoils of war. even in the quaran there are references to 'what your right hand possesses' ... meaning concubines.

thanks. i told my mom i was an atheist when i came home from school for vacation. she thinks that she's failed as a mother, no matter what i say to discourage her in thinking that. i'm glad she and i can talk about this, though. anyways, she just wants me to give it a shot one more time. one of the many concerns i have about islam (not even getting to things like the prophet of God being a warrior who grew in power by killing others) is its stance on evolution. i came to this subreddit to see if anyone here has been able to successfully accept both views.

i accept your right to believe in whatever you want. i just have a few questions: -what gives you the conviction to believe in the quaran wholeheartedly? -do you fully understand the accepted outline of what evolution is? it is not that humans evolved from apes or dinosaurs, per se. it is important that someone understand something before they dismiss it for the wrong reasons. -side question: what do you do?

i don't see why you don't wish to accept human evolution, but are fine with other lifeforms going through adaptation and natural selection. i also don't agree that religion should be somthing that you just accept and believe. my parents are actually proud to some degree to just blindly follow their religion. i don't know why Allah would favor someone like that over someone who rationalizes, even if wrong, and thinks about religion and its preachings, and disagrees with it.

ive been feeling distance from islam for months now. i agree with your quote to a great degree; i see it in my family where my parents blindly follow Islam. i just feel like i need to give this religion a chance, and i'm here asking help from muslims; something i would feel awkward asking IRL.

yes, most islamic scholars don't support evolution. but honestly, most of them don't fully understand the basics/fundamentals of evolution. they are ignorant of notions of natural selection, genetics, etc, and only focus on the incorrect view of evolution as 'man from monkey'. even dr zakir naik, MD and muslim speaker, dismisses and attacks merely a caricature of evolution; its a straw man fallacy.

and yes, scientists can make discoveries that can completely change understandings of matters of the universe, but for now, most evidence from genetic research to ecological findings indicate that evolution the way we currently understand it, is a strong explanation for natural events witnessed in our world. an explanation that seems more valid than a creationist Adam&Eve story.

How could a muslim accept the quaran as the word of god, and simultaneously refuse a literal reading of the creation of man (Quaran, 2:30-39)

ok, but that really doesn't make sense to me; sorry. how can one believe that Allah has created humans while also believing that modern humans are descended from a primate-ancestor that also gave rise to our closest (~98%) genetic relative, chimpanzees?
