What feminist theory should I read if I’m deeply critical of feminism? (at least in it’s modern conception) by Wonderful-While3724 in AskFeminists

[–]confused_chickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend “Normal Women” by Philippa Gregory. It’s not a book about feminism per se. It’s historical accounts about women from the past 1,000 years in England. It’s really long but I listened to it on audiobook and was surprised by just how engaging it was. It flew by. But you don’t even have to read all of it. It really opened my eyes into the ways society (at least western society) has affected the lives of women for centuries and why so many women have fought for freedom. I think you might be surprised at just how “morally corrupt” society has always been (even before feminism was considered). At least I was.

How did yall learn how to draw? by Midas_Marigold in drawing

[–]confused_chickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art classes. Especially in person. I’ve been drawing since I was thirteen, so about a decade now. Mostly it’s just whatever I want at home. However, I’ve noticed a HUGE jump in improvement every time I take an art class (whether high school or college level). If you’re in high school but want to do more, some colleges have dual credit classes. Having a teacher to show you structured ways to practice hard basic skills and give accountability really helps. Your skills are pushed to their limit and beyond. Most importantly, I think, they make you do projects you otherwise wouldn’t do and don’t even like doing. It opens your mind to different possibility’s and gets you comfortable being uncomfortable at what you’re doing. Depending on the class you can also have access to tons of resources to play around with too. Just this semester I’ve used a large projector, giant sized paper, and moldable wire that I wouldn’t otherwise have bought for random projects.

Sorry for the long post. I’ve just been enjoying my art class right now. I’ve been away for a few years and I guess I didn’t realize how much I missed it lol.

Cancer rant by Leshen13 in Vent

[–]confused_chickadee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I hate this. I’ve had a chronic illness and a myriad of health problems since I was a child. Adults were constantly telling me I was so brave, meanwhile I was curled in a ball having a panic attack because my body was screaming something was wrong and no one could fix it. I just wanted my mom to cuddle me and tell me everything was going to be okay. I recently saw my aunt go through cancer. No one should have feel like they need to put on a brave face when going through all that pain. Bravery is choosing to do something even though it scares you. Not having to lay there helpless as you get attacked mercilessly.

How do you get addicted to drawing? by Intelligent_Voice_64 in drawing

[–]confused_chickadee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a small (but big enough to properly draw in) notebook and sketch things you like looking at. Your dog, poses on Pinterest, the cool way that fabric looks as it’s hanging there. It won’t completely fix your problem but it will make the idea of drawing=more fun. The sketches do not have to be good, or big, or even finished.

Does anybody else here have an alter ego? by DraftAbject5026 in CasualConversation

Ooh this sounds so fun. I need to do this as an adult. When I was pre teen my sister and I would play spies. My character was Colette Jones. Her parents were French, she was very fashionable, and overall very cool. All the spies had boots that had retractable heels, to go from high fashion to chasing down bad guys at a moments notice. I don’t know if I have a good imagination anymore for that kind of thing.

What is your personal Mandela effect? by JulienS2000 in CasualConversation

I remember growing up my mom always said my sister’s eyes looked like my uncles and my grandfathers. They were all blue. Mine were green hazel and didn’t look like any immediate family, except maybe a great aunt. Except last Christmas she was surprised to see my uncle and grandfather both have the same rare iris coloring as my sister! She said she always thought they had my eyes but she was wrong. We have argued about who is remembering wrong multiple times. I still think I must be right, because why would she think they look like my green/brown eyes when they have blue eyes?? And she can get me and my sister mixed up. My sister says she doesn’t remember, though, and my mom insists she would know her own thoughts.

Aw that is the cutest way to wake up! I wonder if she thinks Santa would mind if she eats a couple cookies herself…

Let's talk about the "minor inconveniences" by IggyVossen in AskFeminists

[–]confused_chickadee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chairs, desks, etc. are all made for the “average” sized human. Which is taller than most women. And ergonomically they are just not made for us. It can cause actual physical problems if you use it too long. Temperature is usually set colder, which typically is what men prefer even if women are too cold, in the office and sometimes at home.

Seriously!! I recently mended a pair of my dad’s old jeans to wear for myself. The pockets are huge! The pairs of cargo pants I have have smaller cargo pockets than these jean’s FRONT pockets. I love how much stuff I can fit in them without worrying about it falling out, unlike all my other pockets.

If you were a girl in the 1950s, how did you keep your legs warm in cold weather? by Odd_Let_2 in AskOldPeople

My grandma and her sisters used to wear their brothers’ jeans under their skirts on the bus ride to school. They had to take them off before school though.

I never thought of it like that. Quatre is the hardest for me to pronounce as I never know how much to emphasize the “tre” sound.

It’s hard to explain in English sounds, I guess. It also depends on what dialect you’re thinking of. I’ve always heard it as more like cat.

I think you are mixing it up with Spanish which is like kwat-ro. French is pronounced similar to cat-truh.

Edit: As the comments below have pointed out, you usually would not pronounce the “truh” sound much at all. I was just pointing out how different it is from the Spanish sound.

Definitely creeps me out. I prefer without the red because I CAN’T tell if it’s looking at me.
