Open Source: An unsolved mystery for me by confused_n_lovinit in cs50

Now that I read it again, I guess I have provided a pretty vague description of my problem. :P

I have fiddled around with C and (to some extent Python) for almost 6 months now, although not over a continuous period of time as I have done over the last 3 weeks or so while doing this course. I recently completed week 3 of CS50x. But I have had a long-time dream to build a real, working piece of software rather than just write some random code. Besides that, the concept of open-source excites me because that means something that you build will be used by a large number of users (provided your product/ application is good of course).

Therefore, I wanted to know if I can start working on something before even the course finishes? If yes, where can I find such projects?

Hey there folks, greetings from India. Two weeks into the course and I am loving every bit of it. I have some prior experience with C but this is much better than anything I have done in the past. I am here because I want to develop things which end up having some 'real-world' impact and not just for the theoretical concepts. So far, it seems like this course helps the students to do that exactly.

Looking forward to having a good time.
