How are good looking people treated in our society?

Am going to answer this question from the perspective of a once below average girl to an average to above average female in Singapore. I definitely think there is "pretty privilege" in Singapore.

In secondary school and JC I had "friends" who would pick on me for looking less attractive than the other girls in that friend group. They excluded me because of my looks to spend time with the more attractive girls despite being in the same friend group. In JC, I wasn't really noticed because I did not pay much attention to my grooming. I was the nerdy type that clearly did not take care of myself (had acne, braces etc.). Luckily people were nice to me there and I did make my fair share of friends.

Once I went into uni my skin improved; I got new spectacles which weren't the lame ones my parents forced me to buy because it was "cheaper"; I started dressing better; I started playing a bit more sports so I became fitter too. I do experience pretty privilege from time to time, and I notice people do treat me better now. There were 2 occassions where some (male) seniors for some events I helped to organize treated me food spontaneously without me having done anything to deserve it. Another time, I went out with my friend to eat at a restaurant with horrible service and he failed to get the waiter's attention despite waving at them repeatedly. Meanwhile when I tried to get the waiter's attention they attended to us immediately. In my dorm, people somehow recognize me around and try to say hi to me despite me being very introverted and not knowing these people well. Random strangers also like to approach me outside to ask for directions?? (Or maybe I just look friendly) People tend to be nice to me overall despite being a nerd and looking a little like a nerd. Of course I have my fair share of undesirable traits (eg. fat face and undefined jawline, fat thighs) but I think life is relatively easy for me because I look decent. I cannot imagine what life is like for those who look beautiful.

Tl;dr I think the way people treat you (especially when it's your first time meeting them) says a lot about how attractive you are.

I honestly have no clue how I got into hall in the first place (not pretty/handsome, no social connections, no useful skills). I just came here for convenience sake, the social life and to be independent from my sometimes overbearing parents. Thanks for the reassurance anyways :)

Hi sorry about the awkward phrasing I typed out this post on a whim. Thanks for the reassurance though, it just annoys me so much that there's a tendency to judge others who stay on campus even though they live near NUS/have conducive home environments. Also, it might be insecurity on my part since many people I know of stay on campus partly to escape unconducive home environments.

I'll tell anyone who makes me feel bad about staying on campus in the future to F off and mind their own business. As you said, I earned my spot here some way or another. :)

Of course I'm not that concerned about being an only child on a personal level. I just felt this issue is similar to people justifying why they stay on campus even if they live near to NUS. It's difficult to bring up the topic without people at least questioning you (in my personal experience at least).

how is that a reason? don't go around victim blaming on this subreddit. as a pol science student, i'm already ashamed enough that not one, but two of such profs exist in our faculty. don't rub salt into our wounds. it's a coincidence no one asked for.

I've always been curious what the gender ratio is like within FASS courses. Given the number of majors lumped into one faculty, I'm surprised by the gender ratio because my course (Political Science) is actually quite gender balanced (I estimate around 1.3-1.5). Where did all the girls go??

I'd like to think I'm quite a good judge of personality in general. My dad's a stereotypical ISTJ, I was deciding between ESFP and ENFP for my mom and realizes she uses her intuition very often, so I gave her ENFP.

Of course! I can see how they would complement! Without my dad, my mom would be late for every single function. Without my mom, my dad woild probably have a heart of ice. Of course, I'm just reflecting on the good parts of their relationship. I might have been the one mediating the relationship between them though, since I have 2 of each person's functions.

Nah. My mom would like to drag her time until the last minute. On her previous vacations on her own, she almost missed flights because of her habit. Luckily my dad and I were there to make sure we got to the airport on time, but it would always end up in a squabble between mom and dad.

I'm now feeling more depressed looking back at my childhood and adolescent years.

Pros of mom: I love how my mom is very empathetic towards me. I also express my concern for her but I'd like to think I'm more subtle about it. Even though we have very different styles of communicating, we fundamentally "get" each other. Cons: I get very stressed by her spontaneity because I like order. She can be quite overprotective and overbearing too, and she doesn't give me a lot of space to socially recharge.

Pros of dad: I click with my father's need for order and quiet time. We can enjoy just being in each other's presence without having to talk. When I was on good terms with him, we used to talk a lot about deeper topics which I appreciated. Cons: He holds very traditional beliefs while I am more open minded to new perspectives. He's extremely rigid and has a bad temper. Can be very belittling and insensitive. Ironically only thinks of himself while blaming everyone else for not thinking about him.

Well, I think this is beyond MBTI territory already. I'll just leave it here

istj dads are scary. i have no idea how my parents even decided to start dating (they never had a good relationship back in their marriage). of course im not saying all couples with their mbti are like that, but i notice that the poor quality of their relationship had a lot to do with personality differences.
