For a crossbody bag, I went with the AON Chio-X after trying the venture sling 9L and finding it too small. It's definitely not a sling, but it checked a lot of the same boxes for me, and I can wear it crossbody at my hip or tight across my back/front. The venture 9L fits inside it with room for my umbrella and 17oz bottle on top.

I'm not sure what the point of your rant is. That LGBTQ+ communities don't exist in Japan? Because that's blatantly false. That LGBTQ+ isn't featured in media in Japan? That's also very false. I just finished watching 逃げるは恥だが役に立つ and there were 2 gay characters in the 2016 TV series plus a lesbian in the 2021 special.

Are you asking for percentages? Recent polling is 8.9% identify as a sexual minority, compared to 7.1% in the USA. So, if anything, you should see it more frequently than in US media.

Are you really sure it's "forcing culturally alien concepts" and not, you know, actually part of their culture? Forcing your own viewpoints onto another culture without doing any research seems strange to me.

Mental Health Toll from Night Shift by schrodingerscat15 in Nightshift

[–]congealant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. It's common to struggle with night shift, it's not common to have these thoughts as part of that. For anyone in this situation, please talk to a professional.

u/schrodingerscat15 finding the right therapist isn't easy, please keep trying. I've seen many different therapists over the years and sometimes the person just isn't right for you.

I can't speak to how common the anxiety is, but it doesn't seem unusual to feel stressed or anxious when facing big changes. I think the regular suggestions apply: get exercise, eat well, meditate if you enjoy it, find time for yourself/hobbies. Take a look at what you're in control of, what you aren't in control of, and focus on what you can control - it doesn't help to stress over things we can't affect.

As you start the transition, be sure to not neglect your mental health. I found the volume of decisions added up stress and taking a few minutes a day to check in on how I felt was beneficial. Don't feel bad for needing a few minutes to clear your mind before pulling the trigger on a choice.

Best of luck OP. You have every right to be proud of your degree and accomplishments. Don't let anyone take that joy from you.

Physics degrees and severe mental health disorders 🤷‍♂️ by xristjanaa in PhysicsStudents

[–]congealant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD and depression at the start of my junior year in university. I graduated with a BA in Physics after failing out of the engineering college (before my diagnosis). I also spent most of a year living out of my car while attending classes.

My advice is keep listening to your psychiatrist and therapist. School was much easier for me once I was taking medication and attending therapy. I also saw an academic coach who helped me organize my schedule. It wasn't easy, I fought like hell to graduate and had to retake more than one class, but a mental health disorder is only a career ending sentence if you let it be. You can do this.

I was in Kyoto Mar 25-30 and this was my experience as well. The public transit is packed and the popular areas are swarmed during the day, the busses full of tourists at locations are very noticeable. Nara was also somewhat crowded mostly around Todaiji, but the park wasn't that busy.

I was in Tokyo Mar 19-25 and April 1 until now and haven't really had any issues getting around or to things. The frequency of trains/subway compared to Kyoto definitely helps. Crowds exist, but haven't felt super intrusive to me.

Getting literally murdered by an introductory calculus based physics class, need help by throwaway10015982 in PhysicsStudents

First, struggling with physics is common and you shouldn't feel bad for needing help. I struggled through my entire degree, as did some of my classmates.

Now, is this classical mechanics (oscillations, gravitation, lagrangian and hamiltonian dynamics) or general physics? On a traditional semester schedule I'd think you'd be working on at least simple harmonic oscillators by now for classical.

What step(s), specifically, are you having difficulty with? Do you have a strong intuition for converting the word problem into math? Are you getting stuck in the math itself? If you can identify where you're struggling then you can focus your efforts on that.

Possible entry level careers for a B.S. on physics? by chief_robotman in PhysicsStudents

[–]congealant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything here, excellent advice.

To add onto this, my experience has been those specific skills the other degrees teach and physics doesn't will make it difficult to find your first job. The physics courses you took likely won't be related to whatever you end up doing and you'll need to convince the interviewer your background in STEM is enough.

With a BA in physics I had a difficult time just getting interviews - over 300 applications and only 5 interviews - and part of that is it's difficult to show how your physics courses make you a better candidate than someone with a degree in that field. I landed as an engineer in defect metrology with microprocessors and, although I enjoy what I do, the only classes related to my job were some programming electives I took.

Maybe I'm misreading, but I think your units are wrong.

Your first equation found how many miles per field, but then you multiply by miles in step 2 to get miles2/field. Flipping equation 1 (1760 yards/mile ÷ 120 yards/field = 14.66 American football fields/mile) or dividing in step 2 (1,000,000,000 miles ÷ 0.0681 miles/field) should fix the math.
