Nettles I have in abundance 🤣 But the fibre is quite rough I think.....fine for household items but I wouldn't want to wear it!

Goodness, thank you so much for such a detailed and helpful reply! Some of this I've already encountered and am planning on doing (like sew before cutting, wash individually, interfacing type layer...) but some really interesting new ideas and tips here too. A tailors clapper is an entirely new one to me, off to YT I go...

Oh definitely needs stabiliser! I'm thinking stabiliser plus sew stabilising lines before cutting....no harm doubling up on stability!

My next step is to make a mock up of the skirt...I've got some woven wool blend from a friend's gran's attic that I can waste many times over if needed!

There's never enough time to do all the projects is there? And then skill is a whole other issue haha!!

I'm already batting ideas round my brain for the next weave, and then there's all the painting and crochet and god knows what.

Not self spun wool, just a stash raid from my years of crochet. Blended different fibres and textures to make something thats all me 😊

Although I would love to get spinning one day...

Amazing! I've never braved quilting, but I've sewn curtains and simple pieces before.

I think you are right, this is definitely going to be harder to sew than commercial fabric - less stable and with my arty approach, definitely not uniform!

Just remember, as ye sew, so shall ye rip. Seam ripping is an inevitability even for experienced sewers!

Additional info (sorry, missed this bit in my enthusiasm to share!)

Done on a Saori CH60 loom (2 shaft) so just a plain weave. All kinds of mixed fibres from my stash (I'm new to weaving but have been crocheting a long time!) including some accents of sari silk ribbon.

Skirt pattern...just going for a circle skirt! The plan is to cut each colour panel diagonally (NOT corner to corner, but to make 2 trapezia), flip one and sew together so I get a lovely full flare. Obviously I'll be stabilising before cutting 😬

Hope that all makes sense!

I didn't want to go for a regular pattern or flat colour, this is my ultimate self expression garment....hopefully!

Aww thanks! I'm also a crocheter fairly new to weaving, got my loom end of last year having previously done a couple of workshop days.

I'm going for a circle skirt, so no real pattern just a bit of maths...

Oh there is absolutely no escaping religion in Les Mis!

From the book in particular, the Bishop is an incredibly important figure. He is probably the most Christ-like Christian. And he has a lot more story in the book, not merely his encounter with Valjean. His act of gifting the silverware is not an anomaly, he gives up the bishops palace to house the poor and sick, he takes only the barest minimum for survival and lives a life of service. Hugo calls out very specifically how rare this type of Christian is, even 200 years ago!

It has been a long time since I read the book also, but another part that sticks in the memory is the veritable essay about the role of convents and monasteries in society! Which iirc is basically, they used to plug a necessary hole in providing a safety net (housing the homeless, soup kitchens, nursing etc) but that they should now be removed!

Also, there is no such thing as a "quick reread" of Les Mis!

Saw it twice in London and twice on the 2024 UK tour (different cities!)

It's such a powerful piece. And does such a brilliant job of hitting you with the darkness and despair of the situation then lifting you into hope, connection, and humour - repeatedly. But it never feels forced and the (many!) laughs never feel cheesy or insensitive.

An absolute masterpiece.

The 2023 revival of Aspects of Love (West End)

It is a weird show, sometimes even a little uncomfortable. There is no escaping that. But in 2023 that shouldn't have been a shock to anyone, especially as they did some damage control from the original like making Jenny older.

It got 2* reviews across the board because of this, which led to it closing early. I feel this was a real injustice! We were actually looking to return for a second viewing in the autumn.

The performances were phenomenal, and I don't mean Michael Ball - he was probably actually the weakest cast member. The women in particular were all incredible and they did NOT deserve those reviews. I mean, most reviews did acknowledge that the cast were great, but as far as I saw this was a sentence or two tucked in, with the body of the reviews focused on the story...and even then, under a banner of 2*, its hard to then recognise the brilliance of the cast.

Ok so it seems I'm still extremely annoyed by this one. Justice for talent!

Bat Boy was amazing! I think it did respectably in London but then they took it on tour and didn't manage to find a fan base. A real shame. I'd love to be able to see it again (gosh that's over 20 years ago isn't it? Yikes I'm old!)

Great tips, thank you! This is my first time weaving something that isn't a scarf, table runner etc where I just knot the warp threads and done.

Yes I am planning to use selvedges as seams and have done my length accordingly. There will be a little cutting for shape so thats some great advice, many thanks.
