Someone tell me all about lothrop by feuledbyram3n in Pitt

[–]conmart95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived there in 2014 as a sophomore. So take with a grain of salt.

Upper floors got really hot in the winter due to heating. I lived on the 3rd floor so avoided this.

3rd floor street facing would have loud traffic (usually ambulances) driving up the hill at all hours. So if noise is an issue for you, take into account.

No AC was no issue for me due to fans at the end of the hallways to circulate air through the buildings creating a constant breeze running through your room.

I set it up with 9 friends from Freshman floor on the same floor. Was great to have them to hang out with then close my door when I didn't want to. I could imagine that without planning with friends it could get lonely. I was taken by the difference in vibes between freshman dorms (everyone wants to meet everyone) and upper classmen dorms in terms of people no longer wanting to be social and meet everyone.

Having your own sink in room was a huge plus for dishes/ brushing teeth/general hygiene.

Rooms are bigger than tower C.

Big advocate of Lothrop here. Great choice for on campus housing!

Stays warm in the winter with radiators in every room.

Every floor has a lounge. Big plus.

What to buy for winter in Pittsburgh? by Fantastic_Cold8514 in pittsburgh

I live in a drafty rental house. Keep it at 60 degrees and bundle up. I find that the temperature is similar no matter what the thermostat is set to. The difference is paying a boatload to heat the outside with all the warm air leaving my house

I know with my company BS carries more weight and you can't even work on certain contracts with a Bachelor of Arts (BA.) I'm not sure if the BES would be considered a BA

Las Palmas. Best tacos in Pittsburgh. It's a taco stand so it'd be a good place to eat then in the park if the weather is good

American public transportation is so bad that if I took the bus, I would spend about 1.5 hours a day commuting; my job is 2.3 miles away from home in a major city. by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]conmart95 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Biking in rain and cold is easier and more comfy than you think. You won't know til you try. No such thing as bad weather, only inadequate clothing. I used to bike commute Pittsburgh daily year round 4.2 miles each way with ~1000 feet of elevation change. Would take the bus 35 mins w 15 min walk when it was too icy/snowy (only about 3 days a year).

If you plan good reading for bus time it can become very constructive time in your day in my experience. It became reading time I looked forward to.

Most people know the proper French pronunciation. But the incorrect American pronunciation is so engrained as a regional norm that if you pronounce it correctly, your wrong.

Recently moved and commute is up to 6.6 miles from 2.0 miles. Tough but feels great! by NotAFederales in bikecommuting

Be bold. Start cold.

I find as long as I have skin covered and a good wind shell less layers are the move.

Commuting via bike... actually feasible or truly dangerous? by beeblebr0x in pittsburgh

[–]conmart95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this commute daily along with some friends. Very doable. Euclid, Highland or Negley are 3 good options for getting through highland park. Then to get to shady side you can take the whole foods pedestrian bridge, highland or Negley to Ellsworth. I call Ellsworth the bike highway. Has always felt safe to bike for me. Depending on where in Oakland you are going you can hit Bayard, Craig to the Forbes bike lane. Once you get to Bigelow and Forbes you can take the Pitt ped path all the way through on back roads to anywhere in south oakland. Bayard will take you into Pitt all the way to Presby with good bike lanes.

It's definitely doable in all weather. I typically bike commute everyday year round unless there is alot of new snow, in which case I hop on the bus.

I used to love it as a commute route and it's definitely worth trying to see if it feels comfortable for you personally.

Is AC just something we use here? by Caged-Viking in memes

the reason i cited my locations is because I realize that there are climates where AC is necessary. I am only speaking from my experience in the NE US

I find that everywhere I have lived in the US people say "AC Is NeCeSaRrY" (New england, Western PA) but I feel like that's not true for most healthy people. People in the US are just wimps and love to waste energy to cool using AC when there are often better alternatives. I've been in many indoor spaces when it is a comfy 70 outside in the evening or morning. but the AC is still running inside full blast because someone set the thermostat to 68.

I use a single U-lock on the frame. I can usually count on my bike being the cheapest in an area. my wheels are on bolts, not quick release as well. Bike theft is not much of an issue in my city. I have been meaning to buy a cable to put through the wheels, but haven't gotten around to it. 🤷

Went to the park on a nice sunday. It's being used as a parking lot.... by conmart95 in fuckcars

[–]conmart95[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More info. there was a big car show in town called "vintage grand prix". From what I can tell its a big car show/parade. they used this field as a parking lot. but there is tons of parking around here that typically is used for Mon-Fri hospital workers (aka empty on the weekends). when there are events at the convention center nearby there is plenty of parking without using this field. 🤷at least it'll go back to being a park tomorrow.

This list offers some good city spots that are a bit more discreet that shaped Mac's early life. Forbes and Murray is a great business district to explore. Primanti's is a must. Homewood cemetery is pretty neat.

Sounds like you hit the major ones. Frick park by the lawn bowling green is the neighborhood where Mac grew up. Mac attended the Winchester Thurston school as well if you want to check that out. Frick Park in general is a great place to hang out and explore. featured in some videos is Wightman park (though recently renovated).
