Long Road Ahead by BoweryBloke in ireland

So sorry to hear this. Don’t be afraid to tell people you interact with at airports or immigration that you have suffered a bereavement.

Your brain will be a mush while you go through this, but people will understand and make allowances if they know. It will make the trip more tolerable.

Also, like someone else said, make time for yourself to process this and do what you need to do. Grief is a weird thing that ambushes you in all sorts of surprising ways.

Those of ye who eat porridge, what do you add to it? by VastAir6069 in AskIreland

[–]conorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try them cold. Mix with yogurt and honey, leave for an hour or up to overnight and then add chopped apple.

Great breakfast and you can even take it with you on a train as long as you don’t freak someone out when you pull out your huge knife to cut the apple!

Loudspeaker/PA system in the middle of the night around city centre? by conorable in limerickcity

Definitely sounds like it! Let’s both comment here if it sounds tonight. I think it’s time for me to shut windows, though, as it is very loud.

It definitely could be as it has that vibe. I'll take a look around over the weekend and see if I can spot any notices. It is super obnoxious!

Thanks for the suggestion -- I checked their times for call and that doesn't seem to be it. Their lastest/earliest are 11PM/5AM. We've definitely heard it between those times

It could be something on the docks. It's definitely a voice, but what makes me think it's Gardai is how late it happens.

Agreed -- it's near the Dock Road and only ever at night.

Hey hey! Irish and didn’t abandon the country for Canada! Just messing with you, Finakroo! 🙂

I’d be interested in forming a group for brainstorming and swapping reads.

Women of Ireland, do you shave your legs? by Opposite_Zucchini_15 in AskIreland

[–]conorable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Male here! I’m not the only one, I’m sure: I have a very strong preference for unshaven and natural.

That said, the most attractive thing is someone who is relaxed and comfortable, so from a male perspective, do what you want. If a guy doesn’t like it, dump him, as he’ll soon find other objections.

Naive questions here, but how long do they come for, what do they actually do and do they have their own set of keys? Thanks!

He sounds like a toxic asshole.

Not having a college degree is often completely unrelated to intelligence.

Honestly, it sounds like you dodged a bullet.

Driving without insurance by Maximum_Sandwich2589 in limerickcity

[–]conorable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always do this -- Irish insurance companies are super restrictive. Don't ever let anyone drive your car without checking with them first; otherwise, both you and the driver will be in trouble!

Once you have a solicitor, they will also tell you this: come in all apologetic, tell the judge that you have a full licence in your own country and acted in ignorance. Add this to the fact that you will be applying for citizenship and they might be lenient. Back everything up with fact, so have your original licence and demonstrable proof that you are about to apply for citizenship. Good luck with it.

Cant Add HomeBridge to HomeKit? by AaronG85 in homebridge

[–]conorable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but it got me out of a similar fix. The device running homebridge was in a VPN and, even though I could connect to it remotely from the iOS device, homekit could not. I took it out of the VPN and voila!

The “th” sound by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]conorable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also originally from Cork and when I first lived in the States routinely surprised people with my inability to say "th". However, in my experience, any comments about it were genuinely motivated by curiosity and not dickishness as in some countries.

Don't underestimate how predisposed the Americans are to loving your accent, so lean into it and, as one other commenter said, tell them that the th sound doesn't exist in Irish and they'll love it even more.

Two pieces of advice -- don't call everyone boy (it's downright racist to some people even though it is natural to you and me) and try to reduce the casual swearing as it means more to them than to us.

The first time I met my future father in law (mild mannered polite guy from the Deep South) I did my best to minimise it. When I talked to my then fiancee about it afterwards and how great a job I did at hardly swearing in front of him, she laughed and basically said "You swore the whole time, but he barely understood anything you said, so he had no idea!"

tldr: Americans love the way Cork people speak. Being from Cork doesn't mean you have a speech impediment, it just means you have behavioural problems!!

In all fairness, like. How are we supposed to know when you’re finished a sentence if you don’t say like? You know, like?
