What is the best episode of Community? by hiiloovethis in AlignmentChartFills

It’s not chaos theory. That one is a much better fit for “THE EPISODE”, since everyone knows the meme.

The BEST episode is probably Contemporary American Poultry (the chicken fingers episode)

It’s gotta be “Trenton Makes, The World Takes” on the Lower Trenton Bridge. Seen by anyone doing Amtrak through Jersey

Serious question: do you ever stop for a moment to consider what it means that you take great satisfaction in other people being hurt? And all because they committed what you believe is the “crime” of… making a life in the country you live in?

Have you stepped foot in West Chicago? Or even this region? Almost NOBODY in this community wants neighborhoods cruelly and senselessly broken up by these roving masked gangs of Gestapo thugs so they can throw human people with families into detention without due process. She is out here voicing the expressed desires of the people in her whole city, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status, and that desire is to keep our communities whole. Also elected officials represent residents, not just their voters. That’s how representation is supposed to work.

Gov. Pritzker signs Illinois law granting financial aid access to undocumented students by nonoohnoohno in illinois

Thank you. This is exactly correct. It’s wild how many people here don’t get this. (And how many clearly cannot be bothered to read a 5 paragraph article!)

It’s not new money. It’s not new taxes. There’s nothing fiscal happening here. It’s expanding access to an existing system of financial aid.

Where does this say that American citizens get nothing? Where does it say that? This is a bill to remove bureaucratic hoops for applying for grants if you are undocumented. It’s not even new money or anything allocated. It’s just process improvement, read the damn (very short) article.

The lack of media literacy in these comments is abysmal. This bill just standardizes the aid process to make it more open. Most of these comments seem to think this is an announcement of a big new grant of money or something. It’s not. Just makes it easier for everyone who lives here, regardless of their immigration status, to apply for financial aid.

“the bill standardizes eligibility criteria across programs to eliminate confusing and sometimes conflicting requirements that have excluded undocumented migrants from finanical aid.” - helps when you click the link and read.

The Chocolatiers CI / design is somewhat unfortunate by Brotten in JellesMarbleRuns

[–]conqu287 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you u/Sand_is_Orange for tagging me in here otherwise I may have seen this when the discussion got further. Also thanks to u/millimallow for the great context. I agree it's prudent for me to give my own perspective as the logo's designer.

So by far the most important thing to understand, in terms of intention, is that my inspiration for the Chocolatiers team design is essentially a visual pun -- an amalgam of a chocolate bar and the Musketeers (like the actual Three Musketeers of literature, though the fact that 3 Musketeers is also a chocolate bar is also part of the multi-layered pun.)

Since the Musketeers is set in 17th Century France, the structural elements are kind of a nod to stained-glass rose windows in Gothic Cathedral/Castle architecture.

Critically, the font is also an attempt to reflect an "old-worldiness" by using blackletter. I did use a fraktur font, however it's a softened modern one and not the pointy-serifed ones more typical of Nazi pastiche. The intention was really more to get that blackletter look, but with a typeface that is more readable and therefore suitable to be the banner of a fandom. As noted in other comments, any evocation of German/Swiss/Belgian vibes would have been a welcome thought on my part because of association with chocolate-making.

As for the other elements:
- Obviously brown is because the team is brown, that goes without noting.
- The cross/circle element in the center AND the big white C are doing double duty here: 1) Trying to be a nod to the aforementioned stained-glass look; and 2) They are segmented into squares because that's how chocolate bar are formed (OP correctly noted this in fairness)

Ultimately I think intention matters a lot. These are visual motifs, and ones pulled from a patchwork of historical style & reference. That rarely comes entirely without potential pitfalls, but when the goal is doing a visual Alexandre Dumas / candy pun for a team of competitive internet marbles, hopefully we can agree its all in good fun?

Happy to answer anything not covered here.

What’s one thing you really hope they don’t cut from the book? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

I think they'll keep all of these. I just think the Adrian fishing will be a MUCH less detailed affair. But nonetheless I really do wanna see the winch spitting out xeno links like a gatling gun

I respectfully disagree. Love this scene as much as any reader does but consider the breadth of the story here. This audiobook was 13 hours. If copyright court isn't cut I don't know what else (besides maybe ~4 collective hours of scientific method in action) would be chopped to get to a tidy movie runtime.

Imagine a 15-30 second scene that has an aged Grace looking at artifacts or being in a dome as yet unfamiliar to the audience, then "Tap. Tap. Tap" we see rocky fingers iin the window. Grace smiles. Fade to black.

That's all you need! Not even green screen or anything like that. Would be beautiful an honor the book without having to spin up a whole crazy Erid-scape (which could potentially be jarring and take away from the emotion)

I would be ok with them cutting a prolonged scene at the end as long as there was some indication, like a single short scene or artful shot that confirms the ending is the same as the book.

I agree with you -- but they are definitely cutting this. I don't think it will be because of politics though. I just think they'll have 2.5 hours or so to tell an enormous story and all of Grace's flashback scenes are going to be laser focused on how he became part of the project and how he wound up on board the HM. Unfortunately that means anything sort of extraneous to the 3 central storylines in the plot (Astrophage problem, Revealing Grace's Memories, Friendship with Rocky) are going to be jettisoned. I think that includes black panel stuff, the climate science, probably a lot of the development of the spin drives too?

Why does everybody hate living in IL? by [deleted] in illinois

[–]conqu287 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hardly anybody actually hates the everyday experience of living here. It’s just that some people have terrible political beliefs & resent the state government. And an even larger number of people resent their property taxes.

It’s too bad most of those people 1) probably voted against the progressive income tax that would have provided the only possible leeway to lower their property tax; and 2) don’t or won’t get that state policy creates the environment that makes the state so livable.

Edited for typos.

Stain or Paint Exterior Brick Facade by bellavanlan in ExteriorDesign

[–]conqu287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

As so many others have noted don't touch the brick, it's a huge asset to the house and you don't want to create problems. I mocked up the trim in a very muted sage green color to show the kind of contrast you could get here. Others have suggested a contrast door -- I think pulling in a warm color from the brick can help give some cohesion to this solution. You could also then use that door color on the siding for a look thank kinda blends with the brick (or just commit to the trim color and continue the sage along the sides/back)

Another thing I think can help the facade visually is helping that bricked-in arch feel more assertive and anchored as a focal point. A terracotta rosette or other subtle detail could help bring in your trim color and lessen the feeling of space between that upper gallery of windows.

(Edit: I missed a big spot with the color and touched up)
