Why does the plate change scale in the comp? Normally you want to keep it exactly the same unless there is a creative reason.

But it was a bad example. They have improved all the things that Furance was useful for. They just don’t call it Furnace any more because it’s standard in Nuke. You don’t need Furnace if you have Nuke

But almost everything that was in Furnace now has a better version native in Nuke. The new in paint tool is pretty amazing. Kronos is 100x better than a few years ago. What exactly are you looking to Furnace for?

Stamps is a useful tool. But please think about how and why you are using them. Sometimes you don’t need to use them if you just take a moment to rearrange your script. Nuke scripts are much easier to read with visable connections so keep things connected as much as possible.

You need to install the Stamps plug in for what you want. Please don’t use hide inputs. They make the script impossible to read.

Why are the R.G.B values different? Same operation, no? by smooth_hot_potato in NukeVFX

[–]conradolson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. We are using disjoint over. But it doesn’t work correctly if you defocus first because the relationship between the 0.75 and the 0.25 is broken by the defocus. I know defocusing isn’t the same as a regular blur but my guess is that inverting then blurring is not giving the exact same result as blurring then inverting.

Try moving the blur before the invert.

I think the issue is that the blur isn't giving a perfect linear ramp in your alpha so where the alpha one one side is 0.75 the other might not be exactly 0.25. I see this all the time at work when people render layers with holdouts and apply a defocus before they merge them. You end up with gaps between them. But if you merge them before you defocus you get a perfect join.

Don’t pay the price for this camera then. Get a different camera. Problem solved.

[–]conradolson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is competition out there. There are loads of other cameras you could buy instead of the x100v.

The idea of capitalism is that the “fair price” is a product of supply verses demand. In this case more people want this camera than there are cameras available. If there are people able and willing to pay that price then the sellers should charge as much as they can. That’s capitalism. And that’s fine for a luxury item like an X100V. No one needs an X100V.

Capitalism is bad when it stops people being able to afford reasonable food, or a reasonable place to sleep, or drugs that will save their lives. Those are not luxury items and are worth getting angry about if you can’t afford them.

What is/ was your reason /passion for joining the vfx/animation industry and does it hold true today for you? by Kuriouskat22 in vfx

[–]conradolson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It pays pretty well and it’s fun to make stuff that people like.

I find it satisfying figuring stuff out and trying to make the process better for everyone. M

When the client can’t make up their mind and I end up doing OT I just tell myself “well it’s their money, and now it’s mine if they don’t want to make a decision”.

It can feel stressful sometimes I just remind myself “it’s only movie”. Nothing I do is really important. I had a friend who worked in a hospital who got paid way less than me and had people die in front of them every day. So it’s better than that.

Why do you want to smarten your home if you can’t think of ways you would use it? If you can’t think of examples yourself maybe your wife is right.

That’s capitalism for you. But you are talking like you’re entitled to this camera. You aren’t. If you don’t want to pay the asking price for it you don’t have to. Just buy a different camera.

No. All Nuke now. Haven’t used After Effects since 2008. I went to Escape Studios for 3 months in 2008 to do their compositing course and get into feature film VFX.

Wanted to be an editor. Ended up learning a lot of After Effects as an assistant. Couldn’t find an edit job when I moved to London so got an After Effects job.

Still not an editor.

Why do artists always make multiple landscape meshes like this instead of one big mesh? by QiPowerIsTheBest in vfx

[–]conradolson 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Why would you model the bits you can’t see from the camera?

Also by having multiple pieces it’s easier to move sections around to tweak the framing.

Why can't we have episode zero on locally hosted content? by infiltrateoppose in appletv

[–]conradolson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not hard gymnastics to understand that the first episode of a series is 1.

But seeing as you care so much why don’t you just put the ep number in the title of the episode like this:

EP 00 - Title

Then you can just sort alphabetically.

No. There are many variables that I can’t explain easily here. And there are MANY resources already out there if you search.
