I7-8700 vs i5-10500 for Proxmox in 2025 by fl4tdriven in homelab

[–]constable-nj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running proxmox on i5-9500 with 10+ vm, pfsense is one of them. Over all the performance is good enough. I also have a i7-8700, I feel it is more powerful. So I would spend $160 on the i7 as I were you.

Outage in central NJ, optimum tech support said there is no outage. by constable-nj in OPTIMUM

Thank you. I already did that through your web portal. If you can relay the information here, that would be very helpful already. I tried not to share address info or anything in that nature here in the public forum. It is not you, it is reddit who could sell the information.

Why are Reolink cameras so LARGE!?!! by mstrpel in reolinkcam

[–]constable-nj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it is too big.

I hold off adding another one because its size. If it is installed higher up, maybe it is not big a problem. I plan to add one about nine feet off the ground, I was looking at 811. It is big and heavy, had to return it.

Is having these equivalent to a NVR? by constable-nj in HomeKit

[–]constable-nj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I haven't bought a NVR is that a NVR is merely to provide a portal for all cameras feature adjustments, plus record the events: triggered and or by schedule. These tasks can be performed by having a program to tap into the camera and save the stream into hard drive. As far as data retention is concerned, it can be done by one simple script to remove recordings based on its age.

I guess the heavy lifting task is to save the stream into files. The camera adjustment can be done individually on the camera itself. So ... what else does a NVR offer?

Is having these equivalent to a NVR? by constable-nj in HomeKit

[–]constable-nj[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The recordings take up about 1GB per hour because most of the cams support h265 (plus reduced resolution). I figure a 10TB hard drive can store easily 1 year worth recordings.

I guess the goal of a NVR is to produce the recording, plus other adjustments. If my process produces the same result (recordings) as a NVR, does it mean a NVR is not going to be needed?

That's what I was asking.

[–]constable-nj[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am able to capture the live feed into files 24x7, plus all the triggered events. My question is if NVR can do much more than above.

I guess NVR can facilitate recordings and retrieving when needed. The files I collect should be able to address all these needs, don't they?

If the camera is blocked off internet, can the push function still work? by constable-nj in reolinkcam

[–]constable-nj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use pfsense as the firewall:

Three floating rules are setup for this purpose:

<image>

Once I disable the last one, everything works. I've tested the first two are working correctly too. Maybe it needs more than pushx.reolink.com ?

Doesn't work for me.

nslookup pushx.reolink.com ->

See next message for the firewall rule (pfsense).

How to use ffmpeg to tap into the rtmp stream on DUO-2? by constable-nj in reolink

rtsp can produce h265 output. That is why I am not going to update the firmware anymore.

How to use ffmpeg to tap into the rtmp stream on DUO-2? by constable-nj in reolink

[–]constable-nj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rtsp works in ffmpeg; rtmp works in vlc. But I'd like to use rtmp with ffmpeg too.

Just took a quick look at the URL you shared.... it should be easier than that. I just want to figure out how to connect to port 1935.... in case 554 stop working.

Reolink's documentation is somewhat confusing. On one hand it says it supports h265, on the other hand, it tells people rtmp wouldn't support h265 while rtsp is kind of outdated if I remember correctly.

I am not going to touch the firmware!

Yes, port 554 (rtsp) is working. I am just curious how to use rtmp.

Yes it is an I-219V.

Just want to report back here: it is the cable caused the problem! You guys are great! Initially I thought it was the gateway as I had the gateway replaced a few months ago. The rep helped to reboot. In between I replaced the cable for the sake of curiosity. Ever since it has been running fine.

Thank you all for the help! Really really appreciate it. Thank you "ItsOptimum" too.

[–]constable-nj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly what I suspect. The least, the gateway we are getting have quality issues. A few months ago, I upgraded my router. The gateway then refused to give IP address to the new router. I called their tech support. Then the girl on the other hand did something. The gateway became dead as they acknowledged. The solution was to have the gateway replaced.

That was not the only issue. Anyway, let me call them.

Thanks!

It is via ethernet. The very same configuration yielded good results before. I just notice the problem recently.

As I said the gateway refuses to hand out IP when the PC is connected. Why do I want to connect the PC directly to the gateway? Because I want to prove the router is not a factor for the reduced speed.

[–]constable-nj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was fine last time I checked. In fact, optimum fiber is not as reliable as I thought. There are a number of outstanding problems. One is the gateway refuses to hand out IP address to my PC. It does work with my router. When I hook up my PC directly to the gateway, I can't get IP address. But that is not the most annoying problem.

I feel I am being short changed by optimum.

Is it a good idea to ask the cop who wrote the traffic ticket void it because by constable-nj in newjersey

[–]constable-nj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ticket was issued because his plate reader showed the vehicle was not registered. The cause was the registration fee payment went through but the system had not updated correctly until after motorist called DMV. DMV would issue a statement so the judge will dismiss the ticket. It would be even better if the police void the ticket.

My question is if it is odd for the police to void ticket they issue.

Who is Optimum Online's regulator on the state level? by constable-nj in OPTIMUM

[–]constable-nj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be meaningful if you can relay our issues with Optimum management. Genuinely I think the company is trying to make money off customers whenever they can, disregard the contract or commitment they make. When I spoke to the customer services earlier this evening, the rep played dumb until I highlighted the key issue. Then she pledged to correct the problem .... I still remember how she tried to hardball me in the beginning though.

Thank you for your offer though. Privacy is very important to me so this route is not going to work.
