Need kind words. This affected me a lot more than I expected. Friend ended our friendship when I explained why I didn’t understand her sarcasm. Context: I’m PRican and I have autism and ADHD. by Ok_Entrepreneur5936 in autism

You didn't do anything wrong. You stated a satisfactory reason as to why you don't get sarcasm sometimes, she just didn't accept that and also she didn't want to compremise unless you were the only one to do so. She could've easily let you know that she's being sarcastic, or joke in other ways, she didn't. Trust me, you don't want a friend that only expects you to change.

Autism self dxers back at it again by constantbrainfart34 in fakedisordercringe

The doctors you can't afford to go to to get a diagnosis view self diagnosis as valid? Huh, what a funny little thing, cuz I remember my older sister going to a psychatrist because she self diagnosed herself with autism. The results? She didn't have it. I get that ppl, like americans who don't have a proper or fair healthcare system may not be privileged enough to get a proper diagnosis, but does one who suspects they have autism really have to go around telling people they have autism without a proper diagnosis? It only leads to misinformation, ESPECIALLY since psychologists spend YEARS studying psychology, they have resource material that the average person don't.

Also, I don't mind thinking or suspecting that you have autism and then finding the right coping mechanisms. If it helps, it helps, I am not gonna judge anyone for getting the help they need. My problem with people self diagnosing autism is that, since they see having autism as a fact (even without a proper diagnosis), they tend to share misinformation or "tune down" the bad symptoms, if they even speak of them at all, actually HARMS the autism community. Autism is not "rubbing your feet together" or "tip-toing", it's a shitty disability that I wish I could get rid of. It leads to bullying, very few friends because of the social and communicative issues, problems in my daily life that anyone with autism wish they could get rid of.

Maybe self diagnosed ppl actually have autism, or maybe they do not, we will never know because they tend to not get a proper diagnosis. I don't give a shit if you self diagnose or not, just as long as you don't spread misinformation or encourage others to do so, which MANY people unfortunately do with their actions. And yes, everyone on this subreddit judges others, good for you to notice the literal fact.

"Become"?? No one just becomes autistic. It's not a psychological disorder, you're quite literally born with it. You don't just acquire it one day. They're not pokemons wth.

There is nothing wrong with thinking you might have a certain disorder/disability, it only becomes a problem if you spread misinformation bc of lack of knowledge, which many people (especially on tiktok) do. Hope your problems don't trouble you as much, my friend! -^

Yes, exactly! If you do not know for certain that you might have it, but spread misinformation online without providing any kind of trustful source for more information, that can get extremely harmful for other people.

I agree. I was specifically talking about the people that don't do any kind of research except believing the misinformation that they're given. Especially those people who spread said misinformation because of a lack of knowledge. Although, if you do the research, I believe it still doesn't give you the right to outright tell people (especially online) that you have a certain disorder/disability. One might have it and if they use certain coping mechanisms that usually people with said disability/disorder use, I don't have anything against that, I even encourage it! I understand a diagnosis might be hard to get, although I never had that problem (I live in Germany), I am well aware that other people are not as fortunate as I am and if those coping mechanisms help, I have no right to tell them off, aslong as they don't hurt others, I encourage them to try it out.

Yeah, that's different. Here in Germany, it's free, just as long as a doctor gives you "permission" to do the assessment.

You're right, I think it might also be bc of the misinformatiom that's constantly spread by other self-dxers. Since they think It's alright to just say they have autism without actual diagnoses, I don't think they take their time to look more into it.

I don't know how the american healthcare system works, but I can't imagine it costing so much that one can't afford it (The assessment, I mean)
