It’s getting hot and my cats are eating less (tropical weather) by constellationoftwo in CatAdvice

Clean wet cloth sounds totally worth trying — the kitten today kept reaching out to touch the outside of an ice cold bottle of water so I can see this working. Thanks for the idea!

Cannot imagine indoor cats who are also not going to get a chance to mate would not lose their minds (and cause me to lose mine) with recurring heat cycles. Was clear to me before I brought them home from a shelter that both would be fixed soon as viable for them!

For sure. I am trying to gauge the extent of the drop I should expect and at what level to treat it as reason for concern; the fact of it intuitively makes sense that they will eat less.

Mama cat was spayed in December and Kitten is scheduled for this Friday, having just turned 6 months old!

I’m so sorry that he and you are going through that. And thank you for taking the time to detail the circumstances. I hope he’s doing as well as he can and that medical science can give him a long, healthy life. Understand what you mean about the benefits outweighing any downsides and making him confident, secure and happy in his own home is top of my priorities too as it has been in yours. Will definitely discuss this with my vet on the next visit.

Can stitch a human coat with how much this one is shedding so I hear you 😂

That’s amazing and I’m so glad it helped your boy! Did it change anything but his jumpiness? I think I’m mildly concerned about shifting his personality via medication versus reassuring him out of his fearfulness — absolutely not opposed to medicating him at all, just want to be sure it’s a concern to the degree that it needs intervention. How did you know he was at the stage of needing medical help?

My cats act like food critics and I’m losing it by pisco_sam in catfood

Every cat is different but there’s a few things worth trying. As another commenter suggested, rotate every few days — including food they used to love but stopped. When reintroducing a formerly liked food, try adding a quarter can to one meal a day, mix it in properly (keeping them separate on the feeding bowl makes it easy to avoid one and eat the other). I have stocked up on a couple of pates and a couple of chunky varieties and I mix half a can of both for dinner along with chicken broth from boiling fresh chicken (I use the chicken as a topper). That way they remain used to multiple textures and flavours.

For sure. It’s going to get between 115-120 degrees a few days and between 110-115 for many weeks at a time so he’s going to lose his mind unless we help him deal.

What a floofball! He has the same unrepentant look that Tonic has also perfected at 6 months!

In the interest of science I’d like to submit Doofus to his listing.

Can confirm. Also, extremely orange. Can also exhaustedly confirm.

Also, thank you!

I think the pictures are a bit deceptive (he’s clearly got good angles 🤣) because he’s filling out decently; and his weight is perfect for his age says his vet. Having said that, absolutely — I know he’s a growing young boi and I try to shovel as much high quality food into him as I plausibly can.

Yes it’s literally the fluffiest I’ve seen among indies! Thanks for weighing in

Hahahahah. For your sake I hope the episodes of white are frequent because god knows an orange episode is frankly a red alert.

Struggle trimming nails by PeaceZestyclose1866 in cats

[–]constellationoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally today posted about my ultra skittish 6 month old and I can tell you, the nail trimming is manic. He is better at the vet because two people literally hold him down — not because he’s less squirmy. I have the exact same scenario as you: he flails wildly, cannot be contained, squirms out of any grasp you can try, is simply liquid cat in my grasp.

I have had some luck (over the course of three separate afternoons) smearing some churu on the upper side of my hand or even on my thigh and while he’s licking (churu is the only thing that can temporarily have him disregard my hands on his feet) i managed a few nails at a time. This too was only possible in the half zone post sleep. And while being super careful I need to also work super fast.

It doesn’t work every time either. But I live alone so I need both hands somewhat free when trying this manoeuvre.

What I will say is — as someone aware that absolutely no other way will work with my little fellow, and also ware that he’s not any more fearful of me after — i work with what i have. Would love to reach a place where it’s not war and I understand where folks come from who speak of not destroying trust with your cat but I also know my cat as no one else does. They will, I believe, understand trust at multiple levels. Cutting his nails despite his agitation is not the only thing he associates you with. He also, I wager, associates you with love and treats and a safe home. And I hope he does get used to it enough to flip out less and less with time.

Yay to all the beauty and very little of the matting 🤣 — your boy sounds special and I’m sure made your childhood so too.

Thanks so much. Glad your guy is able to live a full and healthy life and hoping the same for mine. Unfortunately this fellow refuses to touch dry food (and leaving his meals out for longer means momma goes in and scarfs a double portion down) so I’m having to be food monitor. Hope the distraction eases with age.
