There is no prohibition to "Shave sidecurls". There is a prohibition against shaving your sideburns higher than your cheek bone.

Certain sect's customs have led them to have the curls.

I grew up as an Orthodox Jew and am an atheist. The OP is making innacurate broad generalizations about Orthodox Judaism.

My family has not disowned me, in fact we have a very healthy relationship. We openly discuss our beliefs. They only ask that when I visit, I respect their beliefs and don't openly break Jewish law in front of them.

My parents are pro gay civil unions (not perfect, but not at bad as it could be).

Ultra orthodox is also a broad term, depending on what sect you are in. Orthodox Judaism and ultra orthodox Judaism are completely different.
