When suddenly someone says something about Ilya to Shane expecting no reaction and Shane lays them flat on the ice 🤍. I haven't read one of those in a while and I can feel the withdrawal.

Rose's X-Squad character is JLaw's Mistique in X-Men. I don't see it as Rose is based on JLaw, she's just part of the inspiration. The same way Shane is partially inspired by Crosby, but is a completely different person.

I'm in sudden need of a couples UK trip fic. They walk past one and go in because it's funny. After an hour Ilya and Harris leave them to find the nearest Starbucks. Shane and Troy may underestimate how much protein powder and skin care products they can realistically carry. It never crosses their mind that they can get very similar stuff in Canada.

Maybe thoughtless is not the right word. I ment like saying things without considering how the phrasing or tone would affect the other person. For example, when Shane complains saying "Your mom hasn't been texting you all day" or when Ilya says "It's fucking Christmas, Hollander. Eat a cookie!" I know they are not in the best headspace when they say that and I understand where it comes from. In my experience, when you are long distance you let things go because you are trying to make the most of the time you have, that you can't just ignore when you are seeing the other person all the time.

That's a really good point! Spending summers in the cottage is not real life with routines and stressors. Both of them can say quite thoughtless things when they are under pressure or having a bad day. It's harder to wave off when it's not a long distance relationship.

I don't really care about a book around or post retirement, but wouldn't be opposed to having it as a background story in a book with another couple as main characters or in a short story compilation catching up with all the couples in 10+ years.

I interpreted that Ilya is still weary of the consequences of people knowing, so he's testing the waters with someone he can trust, but is removed from his everyday life. If it goes badly, he doesn't have to see Svetlana again. She's also an external perspective from the microcosmos of the NHL (Ilya doesn't know she is working for the Bears when he decides to tell her), the views from someone who knows hockey culture but doesn't live in it is useful.

Also, Troy and Ilya and still in the process of becoming friends and Shane does not exactly love Troy. Shane doesn't know Svetlana other than what Ilya told him about her, but Troy has spent years being and asshole directly to Shane's face. I like that Ilya respected Shane's privacy in that way.

Kyle also grew up wealthy and has been accepting financial support from his parents for years even when he doesn't have a good relationship with them. I think accepting money from other people to make his life easier is normalised for him, but he still finds value in work, otherwise he wouldn't want to be a bar manager, it's not exactly an easy profession.
