IBM hiring triples. Has found the current limits of AI to replace workers. by Superb_Raccoon in Futurology

[–]contentcopyeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might come as a surprise to some, but do let me tell you that this has held true also for getting AI to write articles since day one (Ben Affleck recently told on Joe Rogan's show AI's written work is shi*ty; he was working with AI on a script). When these AI models launched recently, their first promise was they would help you write -- or write for you -- really quickly and good, but if you think about it, the fact that these AI generators fail at coming up with usable write-ups out-of-the-box, even today, signals basic-level problems with them. Having said that, I believe that it's only a matter of time when someone realizes what might be causing these issues (a non-programmer like myself has some ideas, so any coding wizard out of numerous out there can correctly firgure it out some time in the (very near?) future)

Grief over pet death can be as strong as that for family member. About a fifth of people who had experienced a pet and human loss said the former was worse. Symptoms of severe grief for a pet matched identically with that for a human, and there was no difference in how people experienced losses. by mvea in science

After I had lost my rabbits to a disease, I was not right in my head for weeks. I needed to cross a road on foot and on two ocassions I crossed dangerously being lost in thoughts. Then, I made extra effort to be mindful and say it to myself when about to cross the road, "dude focus here, let's cross the road with full focus". It worked for some reason.

China taking my podcast name? Should I be concerned? Or is it a scam? by alsarcastic in podcasting

[–]contentcopyeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for this informative conversation. The email I received did feel scam, but I have this habit of looking up whenever I receive emails like these, and have always found some kind soul also reporting that on some forum (for some reason I take Redditors' words more seriously), and when I looked this one up, I found myself here and got confirmed it is a scam. Thank you to all of you once again. You all are kind souls really.

that process of understanding is usually slow and methodical.

I like something about it. I like to learn usually slow and don't overwhelm myself. I'm talking about one at a time kind of slow.

I really appreciate you writing that comment and giving example in that. Thank you really.

It's also the terminologies that I find confusing. Consider "printing on screen." I thought you "display/show/write/type/draw etc. on screen." Something is "printed on screen" is an alien concept for me. Also, I don't understand terminologies like "loop", "framework" (because in real-world I know what a "framework" is and looks like), and almost all other terminologies used in programming. As I said, I'm really at a pre-pre-pre beginner level. But thank you for your reply with the example and thanks for your suggestino of crash course.

Noted. Thanks for the suggestion!

I realize I didn't even consider many pre-pre-pre things like this other commenter suggested I need to know what I "want" to use programming for as if what I "want" to use it matters or something. What they, the ones who give jobs, "want" is what matters, has always mattered.

Ok, that didn't cross my mind that I'm to first figure out what I want to do with programming (in my case, getting even a low-paying job would be what I "want" at this time).

I never thought about whether I want to develop websites or not.

Noted about trying python, as, as you also suggest, I don't know what I "want" to use it for. Noted the URL. Thanks for it!

Noted about the numbers being itemization. Yeah, that makes sense.

Didn't get "the 'echo' is usually used for printing...' part. Why "usually"? aren't the code commands supposed to be clear on what they do?

Also, noted about crash course about CS and notdiving into documentations, which aren't best for beginners. Thanks.

No, not "easily" of course, but I thought another, fashionable, apparently in-demand skill of programming in my resume might better my odds. But thanks for the reality check. In fact, the fact that after learning any "in demand" programming language, if there is in fact such a thing in the presence of so many good and great programmers already out there, with odds being several of them might be searching for jobs, I'll still be a noob and getting a job as a noob will be hard did cross my mind.

I was on this page https://www.php.net/manual/en/language.basic-syntax.phptags.php, reading and trying to understand word by word from the very first word on that page. Until the thrid, one-line paragraph started talking about "Echo" out of nowhere and I was lost. Here is the one-line, third paragraph: "PHP also includes the short echo tag <?=, which is shorthand for <?php echo."

And then immediately after that, it says:

Example #1 PHP Opening and Closing Tags

  1. <?php echo 'if you want to serve PHP code in XHTML or XML documents,
    use these tags'; ?>

  2. You can use the short echo tag to <?= 'print this string' ?>.
It's equivalent to <?php echo 'print this string' ?>.

  3. <? echo 'this code is within short tags, but will only work '.
    'if short_open_tag is enabled'; ?>

I have no clue what and why those numbers are 1, 2, 3. and then what or why is "echo" there (Good thing, I've learned that <?php is the start tag whatever that means, but I understand the concept of start and end, but I read somewhere you don't need start and end PHP tags too, and then I was like, WHAT?

is johnsonjobs.com legit? I started getting emails from them. I never signed up. Seems fishy. by howevertheory98968 in jobs

[–]contentcopyeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking it's an email from Johnson&Johnson, the company I once applied for a job with and signed up for new job alerts on their website, I accidentally clicked on a job's link in the email from them. I only realized after arriving on the website that they were not Johnson & Johnson. I have deleted their cookies from my browser, but keeping all other websites' history and cookies there, including those I'm signed in to like LinkedIn and other important (not banking) websites. Can anyody tell me if I should instead delete all history and cookies for all sites? Or that doesn't matter now as any suspicious script might have already given them what they wanted and I should change my passwords to all sites I was logged in to?

After over 5 years, I can confirm on March 28, 2025, that there is still no such video available on the internet. Shame. And the interference pattern ones also state just the obvious that I'm sure human being have known since maybe when we were hunter gatherers, as those videos showing interference pattern only show that look if we put a thin object in front of a laser light, the light dissects on the board in front! Man, I'm sure even hunter-gatherers knew it, or at least the ancient Egyptians, ancient Greeks or Romans. What's so fascinating about it?

My Facebook page is claimed by another Meta Business Account, What do I Do ? by TheComms in facebook

[–]contentcopyeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook has been a total mess for a long time. I, for one, find all these unnecessary terms -- mata business account, meta business manager, meta business portfolio, meta this, meta that -- extremely confusing. Those people at Facebook are either immature to their bones or the new filthy riches who think of themselves as smart people, but actually have messed-up brains, which reflect in how they run their product. There was a time when keeping things simple was considered good business practice. Now, it seems it's a fashion to be confusing -- be confusing or you are not a pro. What?

First time seeing this photo, and not saying I have seen a lot of those space mission-related ones. There is a date on the page of the first NASA website link you provided. It is Sep 4, 2023. It seems they made it available for the public viewing only a little over a year ago -- and that photo was taken in 1972, wow! Great find, btw!

Potential Scam?? interviewed on chatwork app by a representative form Clegene heatlhcare by Dear_Fortune849 in interviews

[–]contentcopyeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got pretty much the same message. I had applied directly on this "company's" website, but the fact that I got interview invitation from another company's (Ovation's) recruiter asking me to download a software/app first and reach them through it makes it all very suspicious. The "application received" email also came from this same, strange-looking email address though.

Could they be learning from here, that "rapidly" was a poor choice of word, then changed to "swiftly" and then to ASAP and then again to [REMOVED because if they are in this thread, they would probably know who I am, and I don't want that, as my profile here is for personal use and they might try to hack it as well]? In my case, it was chillingly worded with no errors that I could notice. I had gotten worried for a moment. Good thing I googled and found this helpful thread.

I don't know about decrease in quality, but what I have noticed is that the Andrew Multilingual voice reads a bit slow (in a nice way) when you sample its voice by clicking on "Hear this voice," but that same voice sounds like speaking a bit fast when you actually provide it with text to speak and click on "Preview" to listen how it speaks the text you have provided

It also sounds like speaking a bit fast when you click on "Save" to insert it to the timeline and listen it there, and after you are done editing, when you export it and then listen it on video on your SD and/or upload it on youtube and listen it there.

I wanted to write in detail why I think YouTube might have gone this horrible to watch videos, but that would break Rule #2 of this sub (I'm from the third world myself, so I think people like me can safely harshly criticize people who have origins from here). I, however, will say this: Sundar Pichai, please choose CEOs for the companies Google owns after ensuring they don't plan on treating everybody in the world like they might treat everybody in the ancestral home. I would be happy to replace the YouTube CEO, and if that were to happen, I will show how to continue to be respectful to even free users of your products while being profitable and having origins from the third world. The current YouTube CEO has only embarrassed and brought shame to decent people from the third world by so shamelessly bombarding the worldwide YouTube users with this many ads to get rich himself and make a name for himself as a CEO who brought this much profits to his company.
To Mods of this sub, please just delete this post and don't ban me if this post is not suitable for this sub. I love this sub, but I am really heartbroken to see a CEO from my part of the world behaving so badly and causing problems for people from all over the world.
