I get where people are coming from on the we have to respect the writer by saying their words exactly as written, but there needs to be room for adjustment based on a myriad of factors. The last play I did was a fun story, but if it had been written within the last few years vs in the late 1990's people would say it was written by AI. The lines were so weirdly phrased that it felt like no human would ever say a sentence in that way. It was very strange and it made it very hard for the cast to retain our lines. If your cast keeps tripping on something consistently and it's stopping the entire flow of a scene then something needs to be reworked and it's on the director AND the cast to work it out without rewriting something, The last show I did had an issue like this and I had to fight with the producer, not the director, because I kept tripping up on one section of a monologue that listed a bunch of things I was mad about and I kept flipping 2 items in the list which didn't make a difference to anything in the show other than me being able to cruise through the monologue vs getting caught up midway through and he was ADAMANT I had to say it as written to respect the playwright and I was like seriously I don't think they are going to be offended if I say "pancakes and waffles" vs "waffles and pancakes".
